Brit Watch

Sadly, there appear to only be two British players that I know of still battling away in this event (we really don't possess the best of records over here), Praz Bansi with 8,500 and 2008 Irish Open champion Neil Channing with 7,000. How come you Americans are so dominant? What's the secret? I demand to know!... please.

Notable Exits

Young British high-flier Stuart Rutter is out, running his A-J into A-Q preflop and failing to improve.

-----

Another early chip leader who has kicked his tournament bucket and headed most likely for the bar is JC Tran, although details are currently lacking concerning the manner of his exit.

The Bansi Plays a Marching Tune

After struggling the entire day, rarely threatening the chip leaders, last year's bracelet winner Praz Bansi has finally exited at the hands of Steven Shanks. Normally you'd struggle to report a 7-2 versus K-K encounter without raising a sneaky rye smile, but in Praz's defense, he was pushing a short-stack from the small blind, and rather unfortunate to find the initial raiser with such a strong hand.

Although the Brit stumbled upon a ray of hope with a flopped flush draw, it failed to emerge as the raggy board supplied Shanks with the pot, and Bansi the door. Shanks now on 29,000.

It's Like Christmas for Kristen

Kristen Jonkman survives a preflop all-in with {K-Spades}{10-Hearts} against her opponent's {Q-Hearts}{J-Diamonds} -- she hits the king on the flop for good measure and doubles up her woefully short stack to around 7,000.

Then a few hands later, she has a spot of good luck when an opponent bets 2,500 and then calls Kristen's 6,400 total all-in bet -- the opponent is holding {10-Clubs}{Q-Spades} but Kristen has picked up {K-Spades}{K-Hearts}, which holds up all the way to the river of the {J-Clubs}{J-Diamonds}{2-Spades}{3-Spades}{7-Hearts} board.

Double-Up Doug

Doug "Rico" Carli has doubled up to a still relatively short 12,000. He called a 2,500 UTG raise from the big blind and then shoved the {Q-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}{9-Spades} flop for his last 3,500. The gentleman UTG called, and found himself very much behind with {10-Diamonds}{10-Hearts} against Carli's {A-Hearts}{Q-Clubs} -- a useless {8-Spades} turn and {9-Spades} river and Carli is twice the man he used to be, stack-wise.

It's Like Online

Wow, as we rapidly approach the 100-runner-remaining mark, I am astounded at how fast the Day 1 field has imploded. I know it's a smaller buy-in event, but they're still playing one-hour levels here, and to me the pace seems more akin to an online tournament than a live one. With two whole levels left to play tonight, we may be looking at a fairly swift Day 2...

Toilet Talk

Whilst there is a slight lull in play (one of few throughout the day), I feel I must take issue with the toilets here at the Rio Casino. I don't know if its a cultural difference that spans across the whole of America, or whether it is a modern convenience exclusive to Vegas, but I continue to find the automatic flushes in the mens' toilets most perplexing.

We don't seem to have these implements of modern technology over in the UK, so I am finding it increasingly difficult to adjust. When I want them to flush they don't, when I don't, they do, and I've lost count of the amount of times that they've been activated whilst I'm seated. I really should Google them to find out how they work.

Is there a manual flush I can use? Because often when I am finished, I am forced to exit without being able to flush, and obliged to listen to the derrogatory tutts of complaint from the unfortunate next user.

If anyone can assist me in this matter and educate me on the working of these contraptions, then please feel free to send me a private message so I can avoid any further embarrassment. At the moment I feel like my parents trying to use, in vain, the video player. Surely I'm not getting old already? I'm only 26!

Big Blind Pwnage

Anthony Keshish raises up the button, and Eugene Todd on the small blind and an unknown gentleman on the big blind both call.

The flop comes down {9-Spades}{4-Diamonds}{K-Spades} and Todd checks; the big blind bets 4,200, and both players call.

The turn is the {5-Diamonds} and again Todd checks; this time the big blind bets a whopping 19,000 and both Todd and Keshish fold. Keshish is down to 34,000. Todd is down to 22,000, but picks up a few chips in the next hand to leave him on 25,300.

Bronstein Loves the Ladies

Anthony Keshish limps and George Bronstein raises to 3,600. The big blind goes over the top for 8,600 total.

Bronstein stands up and exclaims in obvious disgust, "Well, that sucks. This is the first hand he's played!" He mulls it over, and eventually calls with {Q-Clubs} {Q-Spades}. The big blind is coinflipping with {A-Clubs} {K-Hearts} but the {7-Clubs} {10-Spades} {6-Clubs} {9-Diamonds} {J-Spades} board is no good for him -- the big blind busts out, and Bronstein is up to 21,000.
