Tales From the Hallway

Here are just a few of the things you'll hear people saying into their cell phones while wandering the congested hallways of the Rio at the first break of a $1,500 NLHE event:

"So, I had A-Q and raised it up...."

"I was out in 30 minutes. 30 minutes! God, I must SUCK."

"I thought I was open-ended, but it was really just a gutshot."

"I've already reached my daily max on the ATM, can you loan me $500?"

"He called me with king-high, can you believe it? No, I didn't win the pot."

Archie "The Greek" Karas Pads His Stack

Archie Karas just took his stack past the 7,000 mark when he check-raised his opponent all in on a {Q-Spades} {7-Hearts} {4-Spades} flop. Karas got paid off when his opponent called with {A-Spades} {Q-Hearts} but couldn't beat his {K-Clubs} {K-Diamonds}. The turn and river blanked and Archie sits on about 7,200 chips.

Grinder Gone

Michael "The Grinder" Mizrachi moved all in for 1,550 from late position and the button called. Mizrachi turned up {7-Diamonds} {7-Clubs} and was in bad shape against his opponent's {Q-Spades} {Q-Hearts}. The board ran out {J-Spades} {9-Diamonds} {4-Spades} {8-Clubs} {5-Hearts} and Mizrachi hit the rail.

Stephen O'Dwyer Makes the Nuts

A middle-position player raised to 400 and Stephen O'Dwyer called from the button. The flop came {J-Hearts} {10-Diamonds} {4-Clubs} and both players checked. The turn fell the {4-Clubs} and after it was checked to O'Dwyer, he bet 600. His opponent raised, making it 1,500 total, and O'Dwyer made the call. The river came the {9-Spades} and O'Dwyer's opponent check-called his 5,050 all-in bet.

O'Dwyer showed {K-Clubs} {Q-Spades} and his opponent mucked {J-Diamonds} {10-Hearts} face up. O'Dwyer is now sitting on a stack of roughly 14,000 chips.

Liz Lieu Eliminated

Previously on "As the Flop Turns"...

Liz Lieu moved in with {A-?} {10-?} on an {A-?} {3-?} {3-?} flop. Unfortunately, her opponent called with {A-?} {J-?} and his kicker played. This took Lieu down to only 400 in chips.

Lieu shipped that 400 in on the next hand and was called by two players. The flop was {A-Diamonds} {K-Spades} {J-Hearts}. One of her two opponents check-raised the other out of the pot on the flop and showed down {Q-Diamonds} {10-Hearts} , having flopped the nut straight. This time, Lieu had the {A-Spades} {J-Spades} for top and bottom pair, but she did not improve on the {9-Diamonds} turn or the {Q-Hearts} river.

Kenna Puts the Squeeze On

Kenna James has chipped up nicely in these early levels courtesy of hands like this one.

The UTG player raised to 600, an EP player raised to 2,000, James shoved for 5,425 from the big blind and after tanking for several minutes, both his opponents folded. James flashed {A-Hearts} {J-Diamonds} and raked in the pot, increasing his stack to 8,125.

Hachem Makes the Most of Jacks

Joe Hachem raised to 600 from under the gun. Action folded around to the button who reraised to 1,500. Hachem made the call and they went heads up to a flop of {9-Spades} {8-Hearts} {7-Spades}. Hachem moved all in and got a quick call from the button. The players showed:

Hachem: {J-Hearts} {J-Spades}
Opponent: {A-Hearts} {K-Diamonds}

The turn and river came the {7-Diamonds} and {3-Clubs} respectively. Hachem sent another player home and now works with about 9,500 chips.
