Why Was Six Afraid of Seven?

It was a three-way pot on Table 86 and Todd Brunson was at the center of it. The big blind led out on a flop of {9-Spades} {6-Diamonds} {5-Hearts} and was called by Brunson and one other player. When the turn fell {Q-Clubs}, the big blind checked.

Brunson fired out a bet himself that was raised by the player behind him. Brunson was the only caller to a {K-Diamonds} river. He checked and then raised a bet. His opponent called, saying "I have a straight." He opened {A-Spades} {2-Spades} {10-Spades} {7-Spades}.

Brunson showed {Q-Hearts} {Q-Spades} {10-Diamonds} {9-Diamonds} for a turned set of queens. He was confused; the dealer was confused; and Brunson's opponent was waiting for the pot. As the dealer double-checked the hand, he told Brunson's opponent, "You have nothing."

"I have a straight!" the player protested. "Five, six, seven, nine... oh wait."

The pot was pushed to Brunson, increasing his count to 29,500.
