The Gods Must Be Crazy

We mortals. If only we knew how very little was under our control.

Over on Table #37 a discussion regarding the "flop god," the "turn god," and the "river god" is proceeding.

Not sure about the identity of the flop god, but it sounds like the turn god is a "hippie chick" who does a lot of teasing. And the "river god" is a spiteful old man sitting on a cloud.

Tricky WSOP Lines

Coming out to the WSOP and making a deep run is going to involve a bunch of things to all work in your favor, but you're also going to need to mix up your play here and there. We just witnessed this tricky line go down over at one of the tables in the red section.

Two players limped in before John Alexander raised to 900. The big blind called and then the first limper folded. The next limper reraised to 4,900 total. Alexander took a moment and then let his hand go. The big blind did the same thing. It's not often you see someone limp behind and then reraise.

Update From the Feature Tables

There not a lot of action to report from over at the feature tables with Peter Eastgate and Erick Lindgren both progressing well on their respective tables. Both tables are pretty quiet with very little table talk and not a lot of big pots at this stage.

Eastgate has chipped up nicely to 45,000 to get his title defense off to the right start, with Lindgren also in the black with 37,000 chips.

Blind Defense, and a Little Offense from Varkonyi

2002 Main Event champion Robert Varkonyi is here, sporting a Yankees cap and sunglasses. His wife, Olga, is here playing today as well. Robert has been mostly keeping out of harm's way these first three hours, although when the blinds come around he's sometimes been seen joining into the fray.

The button opened with a raise to 600, and Varkonyi called from the big blind. The flop came {A-Hearts}{K-Clubs}{4-Clubs}. Varkonyi checked, his opponent continued for 600, and Varkonyi folded.

Same scenario two orbits later, with the button raising to 600 and Varkonkyi calling from the big blind. This time the flop came {Q-Clubs}{6-Spades}{7-Diamonds}, Varkonyi led for 1,000, and his opponent folded.

The former champ has 32,500 at the moment.

Becalmed In Brasilia

Even though the Brasilia room has all 78 tables filled currently, there seems to be a certain energy missing. The somber atmosphere seems to have everyone playing a little more conservative.

We did find bracelet winner Eric 'E-Fro' Froehlich involved in a small battle of the blinds. Froehlich raised to 600 from the small, the big blind would then make it 3,000 total, as E-Fro made the call.

Both players would check the flop of {2-Hearts} {3-Diamonds} {Q-Hearts} . When the {5-Clubs} fell on the turn, Froehlich led out for 3,800; his opponent would fold. 'E-Fro' is off to a respectable start and is at 45,000.

Baldwin Brings His Own Clock

Eric Baldwin is down to just 6,400 chips after making a big river call on a board of {10-Hearts}{8-Spades}{7-Clubs}{5-Hearts}{2-Diamonds}. Baldwin had checked the action over to his opponent on the button who fired 6,175 into the middle.

Baldwin sat in the tank for several minutes. Eventually one of the players asked for the clock to which Baldwin responded, "Don't worry, I'll watch my own watch and make a decision soon!"

He did and it was to call, but his {Q-Hearts}{Q-Clubs} wasn't enough to overcome his opponent's {K-Spades}{K-Hearts}.

Somerville Back Up to His Starting Stack

Jason "JCarver" Somerville raised to 450 from under the gun. The big blind was the only caller and the two players took the flop of {A-Clubs} {K-Clubs} {6-Diamonds}. The big blind fired out a bet of 600 and Somerville called.

The turn brought the {3-Diamonds} and the big blind bet 2,200 this time. Somerville called again.

The river was the {7-Hearts} and the big blind bet a little less than his previous bet with 2,000. Somerville called and tabled {A-Spades} {5-Spades}. His opponent mucked and Somerville moved back up to 30,000.

Mitchell Lets One Go

Will Mitchell is a friendly young Australian who is a regular on ChipMeUp under the username "wrkngball".

Mitchell is thrilled to be a part of the WSOP Main Event, but after a bright start, he's just taken a small hit to be back below his starting stack.

Mitchell raised under the gun and the fired bets of 1,800 on the flop and 2,900 on the turn, before checking the action over to his opponent on the river on a board of {K-Hearts}{9-Spades}{6-Hearts}{2-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}. His opponent moved all in for 10,275 and Mitchell was forced to let it go to slip down to 28,000 chips.

A Modest Proposal Gives Swift Pot

Bryan Swift was just now in a potentially uncomfortable spot. An early position preflop raise from Swift attracted a couple of callers behind and two more from the blinds, meaning there were five all told who saw the flop come {J-Clubs}{4-Diamonds}{7-Spades}.

It checked to Swift who proposed a half-pot sized bet in an effort to claim the rest. One by one all of his opponents dropped out, and the pot was his. Swift showed the table his {A-Spades}{A-Hearts} as he took the chips.

Swift is at about 25,500.
