WSOP Main Event Day 3 About to Recommence

Welcome back to the Rio Hotel and Casino for our continued coverage of the 2009 World Series of Poker.

After a day of rest, or partying depending on their preference, the players are back at the tables today to continue their battle in the WSOP Main Event. For many it will be one of the most important days of poker in their lives. 2,044 players return today and by the end of it we should be within striking distance of the cash.

The players are unbagging their chips and taking their seats with the cards in the air in about ten minutes time.

Shuffle Up and Deal

Capt. Tom Franklin just called the "most famous words in poker" and cards are now in the air.

Less than 30 seconds later, there were two near-simulatenous cries of the second most famous words, at least in this room-- "All in and a call!"

All In and a Call

Over in Brasilia, the entire room is full. It seems that every table over here is in use. Some of these short stacks have had to wait three days -- since Day 2a ended on Tuesday night -- to get their last chips in the middle. The cries of "All in and a call!" are ringing out all over the room. As a result, the pace of table breaks from Brasilia into the Amazon Room (or elsewhere in Brasilia) has been quick to start the day. But with well more than 100 tables in play in this room, we expect to be here for a while...

Two Australian Heavyweights Seated Together

We've spotted an interesting starting table to kick off Day 3 of the Main Event, featuring arguably the two highest profile Australians -- 2005 World Champion Joe Hachem and 2009 triple-bracelet winner Jeff Lisandro. Both are Australian Poker Hall of Fame members and start the day well placed with Hachem sitting with 138,900 and Lisandro a commanding 229,300.

This table was originally slotted for the red section but due to its star-power has been moved to the ESPN feature table.

Kirill Gerasimov in action
Kirill Gerasimov opened the pot to 2,500 from early position and was met with a call from an opponent in the cutoff.

Gerasimov checked the {J-Diamonds}{Q-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds} flop to see his opponent fire a bet of 8,000 at the pot. Gerasimov mulled over his decision a little before sliding a stack of orange 5,000-denomination chips into the pot; effectively putting his opponent all in.

His opponent made the call for his last 61,600 and the cards were tabled.

With Gerasimov in the lead with a flopped two-pair to his opponent's over-pair, flush and gutshot straight draws, Gerasimov would have to fade several cards in the deck.

The dealer would burn and turn the {10-Clubs} to see Gerasimov's opponent take the lead after making a king-high straight.

Gerasimov was unable to find another jack or nine to take the pot, or a king to chop, when the {Q-Spades} landed on the river to see his opponent double as Gerasimov slip to 48,800 in chips.

Grospellier's Stack Grows

Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier enters Day 3 with a nice stack of 207,900. Just now he put in a raise from middle position, and it folded back around to Mario Soares who reraised all in for his last 16,000 or so from the blinds. Grospellier called, showing {10-Spades}{10-Diamonds} to Soares' {6-Hearts}{6-Spades}.

The board came {4-Clubs}{7-Clubs}{5-Clubs}{Q-Spades}{5-Hearts}, and Soares is out. Grospellier is at 225,000 now.

Aces Cracked

Najib Bennani has had a very excellent start to the day, very prudently going up against Allen Kennedy's {A-Hearts} {A-Diamonds} with {K-Diamonds} {10-Diamonds}.

The board: obviously {Q-Spades} {10-Hearts} {9-Clubs} {2-Spades} {K-Spades}

"Nice hand, buddy," lied Kennedy as Bennani doubled to around 35,000.

Juanda Doubles Early

John Juanda showed some early aggression, making it 3,500 to play from under-the-gun before action moved to the big blind, who moved all in. Juanda made the call for less, putting his tournament at risk.

When the board ran {5-Clubs}{7-Hearts}{6-Clubs}{7-Spades}{3-Spades}, Juanda's aces held and he doubled to 90,000.
