Ware Getting Short

Ron Ware raised in middle position and Abe Mosseri called in late position. The button then called and the small blind called as well. The flop came down {J-Spades}{10-Hearts}{6-Clubs} and Ware bet after the small blind checked. Mosseri called and the button raised. The small blind folded, Ware called and Mosseri folded.

The turn card brought the {5-Clubs} and the two players checked. The river card was the {4-Clubs} and they checked again.

Ware mucked his hand when his opponent tabled the {A-Diamonds}{Q-Clubs}{J-Diamonds}{8-Clubs} and slipped to 11,600 in chips.

Nut-Nut for the Scoop

In hold'em, the best possible hand is "the nuts". In omaha split, the best possible hand it the "nut-nut" -- the nut hand for both halves of the pot. That's the hand Michael Freits turned over in a recent pot against Alexander Kravchenko.

Freits was one of four players in for a flop of {j-Hearts} {6-Hearts} {3-Spades}. Freits bet and was called only by Kravchenko. That same action repeated itself on the {9-Clubs} turn and the {4-Clubs} river. At showdown, Freits turned over {a-Diamonds} {2-Diamonds} {5-Hearts} {7-Hearts} -- ace-deuce for low and a seven-high straight for high. Kravchenko nodded his head and mucked his hand.

Freits is up to 40,000. Kravchenko has 36,500.

Team Canada and Team USA Play to Draw

PokerStars Team Canada Pro Daniel Negreanu and PokerStars Team USA Pro Chad Brown are seated at the same table, but neither could get the upper hand in a recent pot. Negreanu, dressed in a white "PokerStars PCA 2010" sweatshirt and a black PokerStars cap, raised pre-flop. Brown called from the button; both blinds also called.

Each player checked the {6-Clubs} {5-Hearts} {8-Diamonds} flop. When action checked to Negreanu on the {9-Clubs} turn, he bet. Only Brown called. Both Team Pros quickly checked the {j-Hearts} river. Negreanu turned over {a-Clubs}{a-Diamonds}{k-Hearts}{7-Hearts} for high. Brown claimed the low with {2-}{3-}{3-}{10-}.

"Whew!" said the short-stacked Negreanu. He has 7,000 chips. Brown is also below his starting stack, but with 22,000 isn't as bad off.

Raymond Upping the Ante

Derek Raymond
Derek Raymond

Derek Raymond has been spotted in the field playing the $10,000 buy-in event and will be a tough competitor to face. Raymond is a young player from Portland, Maine who graduated from Georgetown University and has been playing poker for the past seven years. He's only 25 years old, but has amassed himself career earnings over $360,000.

A couple months ago, Raymond placed sixth at the NAPT Mohegan Sun Main Event for $115,000. More importantly, last year at the WSOP Raymond won a bracelet in the $2,500 buy-in Omaha Hi-lo event and took home $229,192. He has three OMaha cashes on his resume and regularly plays this game online. He's not too well known by most of the older regulars on the WSOP scene, which should make for a nice surprise to them when they see this kid's game.

Mortensen Doubles Up

On the flop of {K-Clubs}{J-Hearts}{4-Hearts}, Carlos Mortensen checked, the next player bet, the player after that folded, Freddy Deeb raised, the player on the button folded, Mortensen called and then the original bettor called.

The turn brought the {2-Hearts} and completed a possible flush draw. Mortensen bet, the next player called and then Deeb called.

The river card was the {8h{, putting a fourth heart on board. It also made the board eligible for a low. Mortensen bet and was all in. The next player raised and then Deeb called.

Deeb mucked his hand after Mortensen showed the {10-Hearts}{9-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}{8-Clubs} and the other player showed the {A-Spades}{K-Spades}{5-Hearts}{3-Hearts}. Mortensen was all in and able to chop half the pot to double up to 7,000. Deeb dropped to 15,500.

From the other table Matt Glantz yelled over, "Oh, he won a pot? My god!"

Mizzi Gets Aggressive, then Binks

We came to Sorel Mizzi's table in the middle of a hand, with Mizzi and George Lind heads-up. Lind bet the {9-Hearts} {3-Clubs} {q-Clubs} {8-Diamonds} board, then three-bet after Mizzi raised. Mizzi fired in a fourth bet, causing Lind to pause and consider his course of action.

"You're getting scared," said Mizzi with a grin. Lind called.

The river was the {2-Clubs}. "That's a good card for one of us," Mizzi said.

"Probably you," Lind replied as he checked. Mizzi bet out and after a few moments Lind mucked.

"Good fold George," said Chino Rheem.

"Chino Rheem gives a stamp of approval," Mizzi added with a laugh. Dragging that pot increased Mizzi's count to 28,500.

Sweat Those Bets

Tony G has two laptops set up on chairs near his Omaha Hi/Lo table. One is streaming some MMA matches. The other has a live stream of an Australian Rules Football match. When we remarked that we don't know much about ARF, the G responded, "It's a good game. It's great for betting."

Bloch Quartered

It's been break-even poker so far for Andy Bloch after he was quartered in a recent pot. Bloch raised from the small blind after Josh Arieh limped under the gun. The big blind and Arieh both called to a {3-Clubs} {q-Diamonds} {7-Spades}. Bloch's first-to-act bet was called only by the big blind.

The turn fell {10-Spades}. Bloch checked and called a bet, then led the river {4-Hearts}. His opponent called with {a-Clubs} {k-Spades} {j-Clubs} {2-Spades}, the nut low and ace-king for high. Bloch turned up {a-Hearts} {j-Hearts} {5-Spades} {2-Clubs}, the nut low and ace-queen for high. He was quartered back to 31,000 in chips, just 1,000 more than the starting stack.

Landrum and Baker Chop Up Berman

On the flop of {9-Clubs}{6-Spades}{3-Clubs}, Sabyl Landrum bet. David Baker and Lyle Berman were her opponents and both called. The turn added the {8-Clubs} to the felt and Landrum bet again. Baker called and then Berman called. The river finished off the community cards with the {7-Clubs} and Landrum bet out again. Both her opponents called once more.

Landrum held the {A-Clubs}{K-Spades}{8-Spades}{2-Hearts} for a low of 7-6-3-2-A. Baker had the high locked up with his {Q-Clubs}{Q-Diamonds}{5-Clubs}{3-Spades} for a club flush. Berman mucked his hand and lost the pot.
