Celebrating Amir Vahedi

Amir Vahedi
Amir Vahedi

Earlier this year, the much loved poker player Amir Vahedi unfortunately passed away.

The Iranian professional poker player amassed over $3,000,000 in lifetime earnings and has nine WSOP cashes to his name. In 2003, Vahedi won this same event for his first bracelet before going on to final table the Main Event.

The World Series of Poker has decide to mark this day as a celebration of Vahedi's life, and consequently has began play with a moments silence.

In Jack Effel's words, "Amir. We will miss you."

Play Underway

The cards are now in the air!

We will be playing ten one-hour long levels today with each player starting with a 3,000-chip starting bank.

Not only is there a life-changing amount of money on the line, a coveted gold bracelet and title of champion, Jack Effel has just announced that the winner will also walk away with a box of Amiv Vahedi's famous cigars.

Aaarrgghhh Aces!

"C'mon I don't want this hand right away!" screamed an opponent as he slammed down his pocket Aces.

He turned to his partner on the rail, "I had Aces hun!"

The question is . . . when don't you really want them?

Fashionably Late

There are still a lot of empty seats here in the Pavilion. Players are still trickling in and will probably continue to do so throughout the first two levels. That doesn't mean there aren't some familiar faces here. Allen Kessler, David "The Maven" Chicotsky, Jonathan Little, Bernard Lee and PokerNews' own Rich Ryan are already in action.

Luck Be A Lady!

The lovely ladies have already made their way into today's tournament.

Lauren Kling and Veronica Dabul are seated together, while Fatima De Melo, Beth Shak, Shannon Elizabeth, Kara Scott and Vannessa Rousso are also seated around the room.

So Who's Here So Far

Gavin Griffin, Shannon Shorr, Chris Bjorin and David Sands are located on the major side of the Pavilion Room, while Theo Tran, John Juanda, Joe Sebok, Jared Hamby, Issac Haxton, Mike Sowers and Ivan Demidov are seated on the opposite side of the room.

More Notables

Some of the players who've wandered to their seats a bit late are 2010 P.O.T.Y. contender Dan Heimiller, David "The Dragon" Pham, Neil Channing, Jeff Papola, Barry Shulman, 2007 Main Event Champion Jerry Yang, Dan O'Brien and Chris Moorman.
