Will the Thrill Wants it Low

Just before the break...

A player in middle position open-shoved all in for about 14,000, and Will Failla looked down at {7-Clubs} {7-Hearts}, and he called with the slightly covering stack. The all-in player tabled {Q-Hearts} {J-Hearts}, and the race was on.

"Keep it low!" Failla instructed the dealer, and he ran out a flop of {9-Spades} {2-Clubs} {9-Hearts}.

"Low," Failla repeated, and the turn came the safe {2-Diamonds}.

"Lower!"

River: {K-Clubs}

Thanks, no doubt, to his pleas, the dealer kept his sevens in front, and Will the Thrill has knocked off a player to move his way up to 33,000.

Chainsaw Running Rough

Allen Kessler opened the pot with a raise from the button, and Karolis Grybauskas moved all in for about 15,000 from the big blind. Kessler called with a quickness, and the cards were on their backs:

Kessler: {A-Spades} {A-Diamonds}
Grybauskus: {J-Diamonds} {J-Hearts}

The flop was a near-lock for Kessler as it fell {A-Hearts} {2-Clubs} {8-Hearts} to give him top set and leave his opponent drawing to two running jacks or two running hearts...

Turn: {9-Hearts}

Do you sense the dramatic foreshadowing? The river {5-Hearts} put four hearts on board, and Grybauskas comes back from the dead to run out a flush and earn the double up. He's up to 32,000, and now it's a very peeved Kessler on the short stack with about 15,000.

Stout Surrenders

With roughly 5,500 chips already in the pot, Matt Stout had first action on the turn of a {3-Hearts}{8-Hearts}{6-Spades}{7-Spades} board. He bet 4,300, drawing a call from one player and a fold from another. The play was heads-up to the river, which fell {6-Diamonds}. Stout paused before checking the action. His opponent bet 8,500, and drew a fold from Stout.

Stout is down to 22,000.

Exeunt, Phillips

Dennis Phillips moved all in over the top of a raise from David Singer but couldn't get a call. The next hand he tried again, after a different player opened in early position. That player called. It was a race, with Phillips on the short end. His {a-Diamonds}{q-Spades} needed to improve against his opponent's {10-Diamonds}{10-Spades}, but there was no sale on a board of {k-Clubs}{2-Spades}{3-Diamonds}{k-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}. When the stacks were counted down, Phillips was left with a single T100 chip. He was eliminated the very next hand.

McEvoy Knows How Many Chips He Has... Or Had, That Is

Tom McEvoy
Tom McEvoy

Tom McEvoy opened with a standard raise, and Marlon Shirley three-bet him small to 4,300 total. McEvoy flatted, and the two men took a flop of {9-Hearts} {10-Spades} {7-Clubs}. Shirley moved all in for 12,900, and McEvoy called with just about the same size stack to put the cards on their backsides:

McEvoy: {Q-Diamonds} {10-Diamonds}
Shirley: {K-Clubs} {K-Spades}

McEvoy leaned back in his chair and started to gather his belongings just as the dealer dropped the timely {10-Clubs} onto fourth street. McEvoy was taken aback by his luck and he just sat there wide-eyed as Shirley stood to gather his own belongings, one card from elimination.

River: {K-Diamonds} (bink, as they say)

Shirley shot his arms up in shocked celebration of his two-out re-suck. McEvoy was already out the door by the time the stacks were counted down, and both men had exactly 12,900 when the money went in. Good eye, Tom, but we'll see you in the next one.

Jaka Can't Beat Ace-High

We really h ave to wonder if Will Failla thought he was going to win a recent when Faraz Jaka called Failla's river bet. Failla had bet 4,000 into a 6,000 pot on the turn, with the board showing {7-Spades}{6-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}{j-Hearts}. Jaka, in position, called that bet to see the {8-Spades} hit the river. Failla then made a half-pot bet of 7,000 and again Jaka called.

"Ace-queen," said Failla. He did not table his hand. Jaka then said something that we couldn't hear, but in response Failla tabled {a-Diamonds}{q-Hearts} for unimproved ace-queen. Jaka mucked, allowing Failla to drag the pot and climb to 52,000. Jaka is down to 61,000.

Van Double-hoff

A player in early position opened with a raise, and another player flat-called before Steven van Zadelhoff moved all in for just over 20,000. The initial raiser re-shoved all in, and that was enough to fold the monkey in the middle and his pocket sixes.

Van Zadelhoff tabled {A-Diamonds} {A-Spades}, and he was poised to double against his opponent's ace-king.

Board: {4-Spades} {5-Hearts} {Q-Hearts} {10-Clubs} {6-Hearts}

That's a good board for the Dutchman, and he's doubled up (and then some) to 55,200 now.

Dunst Out-Pipped

On Tony Dunst's final hand of this tournament, a player opened with a raise from early position. Dunst then re-raised all in for about 17,000. Action folded to Sida Yuen, who was the only player to take on Dunst. Yuen showed pocket nines, just one pip better than Dunst's pocket eights. Nobody improved on a board of {5-Clubs}{3-Hearts}{q-Spades}{10-Clubs}{5-Hearts}. Dunst stood up, put his suit jacket on, shook a few hands and departed.

Yuen now has about 89,000 chips.
