It's Official, Jason Mercier Runs Like God

Jason Mercier
Jason Mercier

We came into the hand on a flop of {2-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}{9-Clubs} where three players were all in including Eric Cajelais and Mike Ellis. Jason Mercier had all three players covered by just a little bit with about 18,000.

It all happened kind of fast so it was hard to get everyone's hand, but Cajelais had {6-Spades}{5-Clubs}{4-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}, one player had {9-}{9-} for top set, and Mercier had {k-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}{7-Hearts} for a couple of backdoor flush draws and as he put it, "I think I have like 1% equity."

But, slim equity or not, the turn and river came {10-Hearts}{5-Hearts} and Mercier binked himself a nice little 50,000 chip pot and three knockouts. Mercier has a bracelet in PLO, so with some chips he'll certainly be dangerous as we get deeper into the tournament.

Lindgren's Taking Charge

Over on table 16, our PokerNews reporter picked up the action between Joseph Cheong, an opponent in middle position and Erick Lindgren on a flop that read {7-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}{A-Hearts}. Cheong and the middle position checked to Lindgren who opened for 2,000; Cheong called, but the middle position player check-raised to 11,000 total.

Lindgren quickly re-potted it, forcing Cheong out of the way and putting the middle position player all-in before the cards were tabled:

Lindgren: {A-Clubs}{K-Hearts}{3-Hearts}{2-Hearts}
Middle Position: {A-Hearts}{10-}{9-}{8-Hearts}

Despite the middle position player having flopped top pair and still having a plethora of outs, the poker gods smiled upon Lindgren and improved his hand to two pair after the turn and river ran out {7-Diamonds}, {K-Spades}. And with that, another one bites the dust.

As we wandered past table 11, 2005 WSOP Main Event champion Joe Hachem let out an anguished cry and started berating a player on table six.

"You gotta be kidding me!" Hachem cried. The player on table six looked up from his iPad and smiled, as did Hachem. Turns out that it was all in jest, only because the table six player had beaten him at another hand of Chinese Poker (yes, there's an app for that).

"Do me a favor," Hachem said to our reporter on the scene. "Get an axe and axe him, will ya? He gets a royal on me, every time!"

Big Check Raise For Bakes

On a board of {q-Hearts}{5-Hearts}{k-Spades}{6-Diamonds} David "Bakes" Baker checked, the player in the big blind bet 2,200 and Phil Galfond in the cutoff called. Bakes however may have been stronger than he let on at first and he check-raised the pot to about 10,000. Both players folded and he took down the pot. Galfond is down to around 15,000 but after that nice little check-raise, Bakes is up to around 25,000

Trip Aces for Devilfish

Level 7 : 250/500, 0 ante

David "Devilfish" Ulliott limped under the gun only to have the next player to act raise it to 1,800. Action folded back around to Devilfish and he made the call. Both players proceeded to check the {A-Clubs}{2-Hearts}{Q-Diamonds} flop, as well as the {3-Clubs} turn. When the {A-Diamonds} peeled off on the river, Devilfish bet a modest 1,500 and his opponent made the call.

Devilfish rolled over {A-Hearts}{9-Hearts}{8-Clubs}{7-Diamonds} for trip aces, which was good enough to win the pot. Ulliott is up to 19,000.

Jarvis Survives

On a flop that read {10-Clubs}{6-Clubs}{4-Clubs}, the player in the big blind, Matt Jarvis and the player on the button all checked around before the dealer produced the turn of the {q-Clubs}.

The big blind checked again to Jarvis, who led out for 2,500, leaving about the same behind. The button called, as did the big blind and then the big blind checked again on the river of the {8-Diamonds}. Jarvis checked to the button who bet the pot, forcing the big blind out of the way before Jarvis called all-in.

However, the button mucked and the 2010 WSOP Main Event eighth-place finisher doubled up after he tabled {8-Hearts}{7-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds} for the straight.

We came to Chris Moorman's table where he was heads up against an opponent on a board of {q-Diamonds}{5-Spades}{5-Hearts}{q-Spades}. There was already 12,000 in the pot when Moorman checked to his opponent, who fired out 7,000. Moorman called, and the river came the {k-Clubs}. Moorman checked again, and his opponent fired out 12,000, which represented about half his stack. He tanked for a couple minutes before folding, leaving about 26,000 in his stack.

When It Comes to PLO, Dwan Knows Best

Shawn Buchanan limped from middle position and was joined by Tom "durrrr" Dwan on the button. From there, the small blind called, the big blind checked, and the flop came down {4-Clubs}{K-Clubs}{2-Spades}. The small blind led out for 2,000, which got everyone but Dwan to fold.

The small blind continued to bet when the {9-Clubs} hit the turn, this time putting out 3,200. Dwan tanked for a minute before casually putting in a call. The small blind must have thought something was up as he checked the {9-Diamonds} river, allowing Dwan to bet 10,400. The small blind didn't take long to release his hand.
