Event #6: $1,500 Limit Hold'em

Day 1 Started

Welcome to the 2011 WSOP Event #6: $1,500 Limit Hold'em Event!

Who doesn't want one of these?
Who doesn't want one of these?

Another glorious day has greeted us here in Las Vegas (albeit unseasonably cool for this time of year), but the PokerNews Live Reporting Team are on deck once again at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino, as we prepare for the sixth event on the World Series of Poker schedule: the $1,500 Limit Hold’em event.

No Limit Hold’em may be the Cadillac of Poker, but Limit Hold’em could be considered the Oldsmobile version of the game. Sure, it’s not as popular, but you’re going to see more hands, more often – and with another coveted WSOP gold bracelet on the line, the emotions will be running just as high.

You only have to ask 34-year-old Matt Matros: the Yale mathematics major from Long Island, New York, defeated a field of 625 players in the same event last year for title and $189,870 in prize money. For Matros, it was the monkey he needed to get off his back: "I think I can look at my resume now and say I’ve got all the pieces checked off. I really had not had the signature victory, until now.”

Matros may have another couple of chapters to add to his autobiographical novel, The Making of a Poker Player, but in three days’ time, we know that there will be one person writing their own chapter in WSOP history. Who knows, it could even be Matros again!

But to find out, you’re just going to have to keep your browsers locked onto PokerNews for every sweat, suck-out and celebration. The cards will be in the air at 12pm PST (GMT -7) – stay tuned - but in the meantime allow Lynn Gilmartin to update you across all events here to get your started on your day:

Shuffle Up and Deal!

Level 1 : 50/100, 0 ante

WSOP Tournament Director Jack Effel has given the order and the cards are in the air! The blinds have started at 25/50 (limits 50/100) and each blind level is 60 minutes long. Each player begins with 4,500 in chips.

Gordon Gets Philosophical

Level 1 : 50/100, 0 ante

As we wandered by Phil Gordon's table, we dropped into a middle of a conversation about the state of the online poker industry in the US. No surprises that this is one of the many hot topics across the felt, but Gordon's take on the situation was particularly interesting.

"It's kinda like Prohibition, when you're only banning vodka," he said, "but gin, whiskey and rum are all fine." We'll drink to that.

Gordon is one of the few notables to have already taken his seat today, as well as Bill Chen and Daniel Negreanu. We've also spotted 2009 November Niner Jeff Schulman, but to be honest, it's been slim pickings after that, so if there's anyone you want updates on, drop us a line in the Shout Box!

More Notables Spotted

Level 1 : 50/100, 0 ante

As we perused the room we've spotted a couple more notables playing in this event. Among the players in the room include Brock Parker, winner of two WSOP bracelets in 2009, Tony Dunst, host of WPT's Raw Deal, Greg DeBora, member of Team Pokerstars Canada, and J.J. Liu. We'll keep scoping out the room and providing you with up to date details!

Negreanu Gets Into the Groove

Level 1 : 50/100, 0 ante
Daniel Negreanu (from Event #5): smooth operator!
Daniel Negreanu (from Event #5): smooth operator!

Everyone's favorite poker-playing juvenile, Daniel 'Kid Poker' Negreanu, is now up to 6,200 in chips after taking down a couple of small pots over on table 56.

Earlier, the Canadian Team PokerStars Pro raised from early position and found one caller in the big blind; the big blind checked his option after the flop of {5-Hearts}{2-Hearts}{10-Diamonds} before Negreanu opened.

"Can I go all in?" the big blind joked as he threw his hand into the muck. A short time later, we came across a board that read {A-Spades}{6-Clubs}{9-Clubs}{Q-Clubs}{K-Clubs}; with Negreanu having tabled {5-Spades}{5-Clubs} for a baby flush. His opponent looked rather sour as he kicked his cards away.

Gruneberg's Got Game, But No Chips (Yet)

Level 1 : 50/100, 0 ante

The PokerNews crew stumbled upon 2009 Aussie Millions Main Event sixth-place finisher Zach Gruneberg, who's currently seated on table 50, but at present, doesn't have any chips in front of him.

Gruneberg explained that as he was a late arrival, the WSOP rules state that he has to wait until the big blind comes around before he can receive his chips. No blinding away stacks here, it seems!

This may be Gruneberg's first trip to the World Series, but the young American already has a major title in this format of the game, having won the $1,000 Limit Hold'em Event at the 2009 Aussie Millions. We'll be sure to keep a close eye on him as the day progresses.

More Notable Notables

Level 2 : 75/150, 0 ante

With the limits now up to 75/150, we're beginning to see more big names arrive here in Pavillion Room at the Rio.

Amongst those to have taken their seats include Canadian Team PokerStars Pro Pat Pezzin and Brock Parker.

We've also just spotted Randy Dorfman, who placed fifth in this year's Aussie Millions Main Event, as well as 2006 WSOP Player of the Year Jeff Madsen. Now if only we could get some action!
