Wow, what a crazy day of action again here at the 2012 World Series of Poker. When it all began today at 2:00 PM in Event 24: $5,000 Omaha Hi-Low Split 8-or-Better, 27 players remained and Phil Ivey was the man leading the way. Ivey went on to final table the event, but we'll get to more on him in a bit. First, let's recap the beginning part of the day leading up to the final table.

Raymond Davis was the first player eliminated in 27th place and he was followed by the likes of Matt Lefkowitz (24th), Alex Dovzhenko (23rd) and Stephen Chidwick (22nd). The defending champion, Viacheslav Zhukov, stayed alive all the way until the final 17 players were left, but that's where his title-defense run would end. He finished in 17th place for a very, very solid performance after winning the event last year and took home $13,031. Other notables to bust before the final table were Brian Hastings (16th), Brendan Taylor (13th), Dan Kelly (12th) and Mike Wattel (11th).

When the final table moved to the ESPN Main Stage, it was Joe Cassidy out in front, but only slightly above Ivey. Between the two of them they held about 50% of the chips in play. Joining them under the bright lights and electric atmosphere were Mike "The Mouth" Matusow, Bart Hanson and Scotty Nguyen, amongst others.

Finishing in ninth place was Ryan Lenaghan. He was followed out the door by Matusow and then Hanson went in seventh place. Elie Doft, who happens to be the older brother of Senior PokerNews Reporter Mickey Doft, then fell in sixth place. Gregory Jamison went out in fifth, which set up for a long four-handed battle prior to Meng La falling in fourth.

Three-handed play involved three of the four biggest names to reach the final table in Ivey, Nguyen and Cassidy. At the time the trio began the three-handed action, Cassidy was in front with 1.615 million in chips. He was followed by Ivey's 1.39 million and then Nguyen brought up the rear with 840,000.

Things went back and forth with each player flirting with the chip lead, or holding it, at one time or another. Mainly Ivey and Cassidy were the ones jockeying for the top spot while Nguyen jumped between second and third, for the most part. At one point, it seemed as though Ivey was going to really run away with things, but then following a break, all of the gas seemed to leave his tank. He fell and fell fast, to just a few hundred thousand chips. At points he was even below one big bet, but then miracle upon miracle happened to keep him in the game.

First, Ivey was all in against Nguyen on the {9-Hearts}{4-Spades}{3-Hearts} board holding the {A-Clubs}{K-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}{2-Spades}. Nguyen held the {A-Hearts}{10-Spades}{4-Diamonds}{2-Hearts} and was in a great spot to scoop Ivey, or at worst get three quarters. Then a turn of the {3-Spades} and river {5-Clubs} allowed Ivey to make the same wheel as Nguyen and chop the pot.

The true miracle hand came when Ivey and Cassidy got the money in on the {J-Diamonds}{10-Spades}{3-Spades} flop. Ivey held the {A-Hearts}{5-Clubs}{2-Hearts}{2-Spades} versus Cassidy's {Q-Diamonds}{9-Spades}{8-Spades}{5-Diamonds}. The turn was the {10-Clubs} and river the {10-Diamonds}, leaving Ivey's full house best and somehow keeping him in the tournament. "Oh my God! Oh my God!" exclaimed Ivey after the hand in about as an exciting an emotion as Ivey could ever get.

After that, Ivey fell again, but was able to run things back up over 800,000. Once again, though, things all went south.

On his final hand, Ivey was all in on the {Q-Hearts}{J-Clubs}{8-Diamonds} flop with the {K-Diamonds}{Q-Clubs}{8-Hearts}{6-Hearts} for two pair. Cassidy held the {K-Clubs}{K-Spades}{10-Diamonds}{2-Clubs}. The turn {5-Clubs} kept Ivey in front, but the river {J-Diamonds} counterfeited Ivey's hand and left Cassidy with the winning two pair — kings and jacks. Ivey was eliminated in third place and took home $136,046 at his third final table of the week.

With Ivey's elimination, Nguyen wanted to stop play for the night as he was tired. Cassidy wanted to keep going, but because the decision to play on wasn't unanimous, things were stopped for the night and the chips were bagged up. Returning on Thursday at 2:00 PM for the heads-up match, Cassidy has an even three million in chips to Nguyen's 845,000. The limits will be 50,000/100,000 for another 20 minutes or so.

That wraps up PokerNews' coverage from the Rio on another great night at the 2012 WSOP. Don't forget to tune back in tomorrow for another great day of poker highlighted by this superstar heads-up match for the gold and $294,777. Until then, thanks for following and goodnight from Las Vegas!

No Number Nine For Ivey?

Phil Ivey & Scotty Nguyen
Phil Ivey & Scotty Nguyen

Phil Ivey is getting dangerously short after he just lost two pots knocking him down to just 300,000 chips. On the first hand Joe Cassidy raised the button and Ivey three-bet from the small blind. Cassidy called and the flop came down {Q-Clubs}{J-Diamonds}{2-Spades}. Ivey bet, Cassidy raised and Ivey called.

The turn was the {3-Spades} and Ivey lead out once more, Cassidy called. On the river the {A-Diamonds} hit and Cassidy called another one of Ivey's bets. Ivey turned over {A-Spades}{J-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}{2-Hearts} and lost to {Q-Hearts}{Q-Spades}{8-Clubs}{8-Spades}. Cassidy had top set and took down the pot.

A couple of hands later Ivey raised on the button and Nguyen three-bet him from the small blind. The flop came down {10-Spades}{6-Clubs}{6-Hearts} after Ivey had called and he called once more. On the turn, the {5-Clubs}, Ivey called another bet only to fold when Nguyen put out another 80,000 on the {5-Hearts} river.

Ivey is in serious trouble.

Meng La Eliminated in 4th Place ($102,260)

Meng La
Meng La

And we're down to three. From the small blind Meng La raised to 50,000 and Joe Cassidy defended his big blind. The flop came down {J-Spades}{7-Clubs}{2-Spades} and Cassidy called La's continuation bet.

The turn was the {10-Spades} and La moved all in. Cassidy called and showed {Q-Spades}{5-Spades}{4-Clubs}{2-Hearts}. La had an amazing Pot Limit Omaha hand with {A-Clubs}{A-Hearts}{K-Hearts}{K-Diamonds}, but Cassidy already had made a flush.

We are down to just three players and will be on a short break.

Meng La Stays in There

Meng La
Meng La

Meng La is experiencing some serious swings as he was just almost knocked out but found a way to stay in the game. First La raised from the button and Ivey called from the big blind.

The flop came down {J-Spades}{10-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds} and Ivey lead out. La called and the turn was the {3-Diamonds}. La called another bet and the river brought out the {5-Diamonds}. This time La folded when Ivey threw ou another 50,000 and he was left with just 49,000 chips.

On the very next hand La was all in. He put his final chips at risk from the under the gun position and both Nguyen and Ivey called. On a {a-Hearts}{3-Spades}{2-Spades}{8-Clubs}{10-Hearts} board the hand got checked down and Ivey showed {4-Clubs}{2-Clubs}{Jc]{9-Hearts} for the low. La tabled {J-Hearts}{9-Spades}{A-Spades}{5-Diamonds} for the high and they chopped the pot.

On the third hand La got his 74,000 chips into the pot and was up against Ivey in search for a double up.

Ivey showed {K-Diamonds}{K-Clubs}{J-Clubs}{3-Hearts} and he lost against {a-Spades}{Q-Hearts}{9-Spades}{6-Diamonds} when the board ran out {A-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}{2-Spades}{8-Spades}{Q-Diamonds}. We are still four handed while La remains with the short stack.

Gregory Jamison
Gregory Jamison

From the under the gun position Joe Cassidy just raised it up and Gregory Jamison three-bet from the big blind. Cassidy called and the flop came down {10-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}{4-Spades}. Jamison decided to check-call and the turn was the {8-Spades}. Once again Jamison check-called and the river was the {K-Spades}.

Jamison had just 8,000 chips left behind and he put them all in. Cassidy called and showed {A-Spades}{7-Spades}{7-Hearts}{5-Spades} and scooped the pot. Jamison showed his {A-Diamonds}{K-Diamonds}{5-Clubs}{X-} before he left the tournament area as we are down to four players.

Bart Hanson Eliminated in 7th Place ($45,084)

Bart Hanson exits

From the button Phil Ivey raised it up to 40,000 and Bart Hansen called all in from the big blind. This gave us a back to back all in showdown, and this time Bart Hanson was at risk.

Hanson turned over {K-Hearts}{Q-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}{6-Spades} and was up against Ivey's {K-Clubs}{K-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}.

The board ran out {7-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}{3-Clubs}{2-Clubs}{8-Spades} giving Ivey a pair of kings for the high and a 23567 low. No luck for Hanson who is our seventh place finisher. We have just seen two hands after the break and already lost our two short stacks.

Mike Matusow Eliminated in 8th Place ($34,748)

Mike Matusow
Mike Matusow

We just said goodbye to Mike Matusow who got knocked out in seventh place. The action started with Matusow who raised all in for his final 15,000 chips from the under the gun +1 position. Meng La raised it up from the hijack and both Phil Ivey and Scotty Nguyen called from the blinds.

The flop came down {K-Hearts}{8-Clubs}{7-Clubs} and Ivey checked to Nguyen who put out a bet. Both La and Ivey called giving us three-way side pot action on the turn.

The turn was the {3-Spades} and now it was Ivey who lead out for 40,000. Nguyen put in a raise to 80,000 and Lad threw his hand into the muck. At this point Ivey put in the third bet making it 120,000 to go. Nguyen called.

The river was the {4-Spades} and Nguyen called another one of Ivey's bets. The agressor showed {A-Spades}{7-Diamonds}{3-Clubs}{2-Hearts} for the nut low while Nguyen turned over {8-Spades}{7-Hearts}{4-Hearts}{2-Diamonds} for the high. Matusow turned over his {A-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}{Q-Hearts}{6-Spades} and that was no good to get hold of any part of the pot. That's it for Matusow and we are down to seven players.

Ryan Lenaghan
Ryan Lenaghan

We just lost the first player at the final table as Ryan Lenaghan couldn't win his first all in at this table. Lenaghan started off the action by raising from middle position and both Gregory Jamison, in the hijack, and Phil Ivey, in the big blind, called.

The flop came down {A-Spades}{J-Clubs}{7-Spades} and Ivey checked. Lenaghan put out his final 12,000 chips after which Jamison gave him some protection by raising it up to 27,000. Ivey folded and we got to see a heads up showdown.

Gregory Jamison{A-Clubs}{K-Diamonds}{Q-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}
Ryan Lenaghan{A-Hearts}{J-Spades}{9-Hearts}{2-Clubs}

The turn was the {Q-Hearts} and the river the {5-Clubs} giving Jamison the pot with a broadway straight. Lenaghan said goodbye to his chips and left the final table area. He will walk home with $26,940 while we play on with just eight players.
