Chad Down Again, Thanks to Ratigan

Daniel Ratigan
Daniel Ratigan

Stud-8

In the next-to-last hand before the dinner break, Norman Chad completed with the {8-Spades} showing, Danny Ratigan raised with the {6-Hearts}, and Chad called. Chad led with bets on the next three streets, with Ratigan calling each time. The pair then both checked on seventh.

Ratigan had {6-Hearts}{2-Clubs}{J-Spades}{4-Spades} showing, and turned over {7-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}{4-Diamonds} for two pair, sevens and fours. Meanwhile, Chad's third through sixth had gone {8-Spades}{8-Clubs}{3-Hearts}{Q-Hearts} for a pair of eights, and his down cards hadn't improved his hand.

Norman Chad Eliminated in 6th Place ($36,093)

Omaha-8

Norman Chad returned from the dinner break with but 53,000, and after giving up the big and small blinds, was down to just 30,000.

Then came a hand in which chip leader Mark Gregorich raised from under the gun, and it folded to Chad. He checked his cards, then glanced at the few orange and pink chips he had left. Then one by one Chad set out a Visa credit card and his AAA card (see photo).

"This one has a $50,000 limit," he noted, pointing at the credit card. He then pushed his chips forward. "I'm betting these, plus another $15,800," he explained.

All laughed, the blinds folded, and the players tabled their cards. "I like your hand," Chad said as he saw Gregorich's {A-Hearts}{3-Spades}{2-Hearts}{2-Diamonds}. Meanwhile Chad pulled back his Visa and AAA cards and tabled his {A-Clubs}{10-Spades}{7-Clubs}{5-Spades}.

The board ran out {4-Hearts}{4-Clubs}{3-Diamonds}{J-Hearts}{6-Hearts}, giving Gregorich a flush and the nut low, and the crowd cheered as Chad shook hands with his opponents before departing in sixth. Not quite a "beyond fairy tale" finish for the commentator, but highly impressive nonetheless.

Ratigan Chipping Up

Omaha-8

After winning a pot off of Oleksii Kovalchuk, George Danzer raised. Danny Ratigan made it three bets, Danzer made it four bets, and Ratigan made it five bets. Danzer called.

The flop came down {a-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}{7-Spades}, and Danzer check-called a bet. The turn was the {j-Clubs}, and Danzer checked again. Ratigan fired a bet, and Danzer was forced to fold.

Bronshtein Doubles Through Kovalchuk

Yuval Bronshtein doubles.
Yuval Bronshtein doubles.

Stud-8

Yuval Bronshtein: {x-}{x-} / {6-Spades}{2-Spades}{k-Spades}{5-Spades} / {x-}
Mark Gregorich: {x-}{x-} / {j-Spades}{3-Diamonds}{9-Hearts} (FOLDED)
Oleksii Kovalchuk: {x-}{x-} / {4-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}{3-Clubs}{6-Clubs} / {x-}

There was a completion and a raise on third street, and on fourth, all three players checked. Bronshtein led out on fifth, Gregorich released, and Kovalchuk raised enough to put Bronshtein all in. He called.

Bronshtein: {6-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}
Kovalchuk: {6-Spades}{4-Spades}

The {5-Spades} on sixth gave Bronshtein two pair, and Kovalchuk couldn't make a winning low or trips. Bronshtein scooped the pot, doubling to 270,000 chips.

Kovalchuk Scoops, Survives

Stud-8

Oleksii Kovalchuk completed with the {8-Spades} showing, George Danzer raised with the {6-Spades} up, and Kovalchuk called. Danzer picked up the {10-Clubs} on fourth and checked, and Kovalchuk bet after getting the {5-Hearts}. Danzer called.

Both players picked up face cards on fifth, Danzer checked, Kovalchuk bet, Danzer raised, and Kovalchuk called with his remaining chips.

Kovalchuk: {7-Hearts}{6-Clubs} / {8-Spades}{5-Hearts}{Q-Clubs}
Danzer: {A-Diamonds}{4-Hearts} / {6-Spades}{10-Clubs}{K-Hearts}

Danzer drew the {A-Spades} on sixth for aces while Kovalchuk was dealt the {J-Spades}. Seventh street was dealt face down, and Danzer quickly flipped up his non-improving {Q-Spades}. Kovalchuk squeezed his... the {4-Clubs}! He'd made a straight to grab the high and a low to boot, and doubled up.

Yuval Bronshtein Eliminated in 5th Place ($48,387)

Yuval Bronshtein - 5th Place
Yuval Bronshtein - 5th Place

Stud-8

After losing a sizable pot to George Danzer, Yuval Bronshtein completed with a {q-Diamonds}. Danny Ratigan, who brought it in, called.

Ratigan: {x-}{x-} / {2-Hearts}{3-Clubs}{2-Spades}{4-Clubs} / {x-}
Bronshtein: {x-}{x-} / {q-Diamonds}{2-Clubs}{2-Diamonds}{9-Clubs} / {x-}

The money went in on fourth street, and Bronshtein opened up {q-Hearts}{5-Diamonds} for a pair of queens. Ratigan had a monster draw with {6-Spades}{5-Spades}.

"Want to trade hands?" Bronshtein joked.

Bronshtein picked up two pair on fifth, while Ratigan was dealt a meaningless pair of deuces. The {4-Clubs} was pretty much gin for Ratigan on sixth however, and Bronshtein failed to fill up on sixth. His downcard was a meaningless {7-Hearts}, eliminating him from the tournament.

Bronshtein's rail gave him a rousing round of applause, and he was all smiles as he exited.

Danzer Pulls Even With Gregorich

George Danzer
George Danzer

Omaha-8

George Danzer raised from the cutoff, and Mark Gregorich called from the big blind. Gregorich led after the {5-Spades}{Q-Clubs}{4-Diamonds} flop, Danzer raised, and Gregorich called. Gregorich then check-called both the {A-Clubs} turn and {6-Clubs} river.

Danzer tabled {K-Hearts}{Q-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}{2-Clubs} — he'd made a wheel — and Gregorich mucked. Those two are now virtually even for the chip lead with four left.
