Greg Merson wins!
Greg Merson wins!

It took nearly 13 hours of play and 400 hands, but finally a 2012 World Series of Poker champion has been crowned. Walking away with the gold bracelet and a whopping $8,531,853 first-place prize is Greg Merson!

After a handful of eliminations yesterday set the stage for Day 9 of the Main Event today, Merson was joined by Jesse Sylvia and Jake Balsiger to battle to a winner. Merson took the chip lead into three-handed play, but it was far from over.

The three players battled and battled. Several short stacks doubled up, the chip lead changed hands numerous times, and at times, no one thought the competition was going to end. Then, on the 382nd hand of the final table, Balsiger's tournament came to a close.

With the blinds at 1,000,000/2,000,000/300,000, Sylvia raised on the button to four million. Balsiger moved all in from the small blind for 20.3 million, and Merson called. Sylvia got out of the way, which left Balsiger at risk with the {Q-Hearts}{10-Diamonds} to Merson's {K-Clubs}{Q-Spades}.

After the {6-Spades}{6-Diamonds}{6-Clubs} and the {J-Clubs} turn, Balsiger needed help on the river to stay alive. When the {5-Hearts} finished off the board, it also finished off Balsiger's amazing Main Event run. With his elimination, Balsiger failed to become the youngest player ever to win the Main Event, but he earned a massive payday of $3,799,073 to take home with him.

Heading into heads-up play, Merson had the chip lead over Sylvia, but both had plenty ammunition to play with. Merson chipped away early, and then all the money went in on the 399th hand.

During the same level as Balsiger's elimination, Merson opened the pot with a raise from the button to four million. Sylvia reraised from the big blind to 9.5 million, but then Merson announced that he was all in. Sylvia started the hand with 69.3 million and tanked for a couple of minutes. Eventually, he made the call and put himself at risk holding the {Q-Spades}{J-Spades}. Merson held the {K-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}. The two crowds rose to their feet and began chanting for their respective player. Then, it was time for the flop.

On the flop, the {9-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}{3-Hearts} rolled out, and Merson's hand stayed in front. The turn brought the {6-Spades}, and the river completed the board with the {7-Clubs}. Merson's king high held up to give him the victory as his cheering section rushed the stage.

Merson was quick to push his fans away as he made his way around the table to congratulate Sylvia on his effort. For his runner-up finish, Sylvia took home $5,295,149. Merson's rail returned to their seats to wait for the champ, but then they chanted "Jesse! Jesse! Jesse!" over and over as a salute to Sylvia.

With his win, Merson overcame Phil Hellmuth to win the 2012 WSOP Player of the Year. It's been quite the year for Merson, and he will forever go down in the poker history books for his performance.

Congratulations to all of the winners, and especially Greg Merson on becoming the 2012 WSOP Main Event champion! And until next time, goodnight from Las Vegas!

Jesse Sylvia - 2nd Place
Jesse Sylvia - 2nd Place

Hand #399:

Greg Merson had the button, and raised to four million. Jesse Sylvia three-bet to 9.5 million, Merson four-bet jammed for effectively 69.3 million, and Sylvia went into the tank.

Sylvia sat up in his chair, silently riffling a stack of red T500,000 chips with his left hand. He began swerving back and fourth in his chair while Merson sat motionless. After 30 seconds or so, Sylvia said something to Merson, who didn't budge.

Eventually, Syvlia asked the dealer to pull in the bets. When the dealer obliged, Sylvia examined the pot, then looked back at a projector to examine the chip stacks to start the hand.

Finally, he called.

Sylvia: {q-Spades}{j-Spades}
Merson: {k-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}

Chants of "P! O! Y!" filled the stands as the dealer rapped the table and fanned {6-Clubs}{3-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}. No help to Sylvia.

"Deuce!" one fan yelled. "Diamonds!" yelled another.

Sylvia's section was silent as the {6-Spades} turned. Merson's cheering section exploded.

The Penn & Teller Theater fell deathly silent, and Jack Effel called for the river card.

It was the {7-Clubs}.

Confetti poured from the ceiling as Merson's family and friends rushed the stage. They were stopped by security before they could go too far however, and had to cheer from the stands.

Jesse Sylvia, who entered the final table as the chip leader, will take home $5,295,149, and Greg Merson is the 2012 World Series of Poker Main Event champion!

Jake Balsiger - 3rd Place
Jake Balsiger - 3rd Place

Hand #382:

Jesse Sylvia had the button. He raised to to four million, and Jake Balsiger reraised all in from the small blind for 20.3 million. Greg Merson requested a count on Balsiger's stack from the big blind, and the dealer and World Series of Poker Tournament Director Jack Effel counted it down. Then, Merson called. Sylvia folded.

Merson showed the {K-Clubs}{Q-Spades} to dominate the {Q-Hearts}{10-Diamonds} for Balsiger. Balsiger was behind, but still had a flop, turn and river to win the pot.

The flop came down {6-Spades}{6-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}, and Merson's hand held up so far. After the {J-Clubs} landed on the turn, Balsiger was down to just one more card.

The river card was the {5-Hearts}, and that officially ended Balsiger's tournament in third place. He left with a shake of his opponents' hands and a standing ovation from everyone in the Penn & teller Theatre. With his elimination, Joe Cada's record as the youngest Main Event winner has held strong, and Merson is now heads up with Sylvia for the title.

Hand #356: Sylvia Doubles Through Balsiger

Level 41 : 800,000/1,600,000, 200,000 ante
Jesse Sylvia doubles up again
Jesse Sylvia doubles up again

Jake Balsiger was on the button. He limped in, and Jesse Sylvia checked his option in the big blind. Greg Merson folded from the small blind.

The flop came down {K-Spades}{8-Diamonds}{2-Spades}, and Sylvia checked to Balsiger. Balsiger bet 2.2 million, and Sylvia check-raised to 7.6 million. Balsiger moved all in, and Sylvia made the call to put himself at risk. Sylvia turned over the {8-Spades}{2-Diamonds} for a flopped two pair, and Balsiger held the {K-Diamonds}{9-Clubs} for top pair.

The turn was {2-Hearts}, and Sylvia improved to a full house. Balsiger could still hit a king on the river to win the hand, but the {3-Hearts} landed on the river, and Sylvia doubled up.

Sylvia was all in on the flop for 32.3 million in chips.

Jake Balsiger

Jesse Sylvia had the button, and he limped in. Jake Balsiger raised to 3.7 million from the small blind, Greg Merson surrendered his big blind, and Sylvia called.

The dealer fanned {9-Diamonds}{3-Clubs}{3-Spades}, Balsiger led out for 4.5 million, Sylvia raised to 11.2 million, and Balsiger tanked before moving all in for 41.35 million. Sylvia quickly called.

Balsiger: {k-Spades}{k-Clubs}
Sylvia: {k-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}

Sylvia needed a nine to eliminate Balsiger, or running threes to chop the pot. The {j-Clubs} on the turn was no help, however.

Balsiger's rail called for a deuce, but the {a-Diamonds} on the river was sufficient enough. Balsiger doubled, and for the first time, he's the chip leader at the final table.

He reraised to 7.6 million, and Jake Balsiger folded from the big blind. Merson was back up and took a minute before announcing a raise. He slid out a tall stack of chips totaling 12.1 million. Sylvia took his time with the decision, then just called.

With just about 25 million in the middle, Merson and Sylvia took a flop of {K-Hearts}{9-Hearts}{3-Clubs}. Sylvia was first and checked. Merson bet 4.6 million. After a minute, Sylvia just called to go to the turn.

Shaun "The Dealer" Harris placed the {Q-Hearts} out on the turn, and Sylvia checked. Merson checked behind.

The river completed the board with the {K-Clubs} to put two cowboys in the middle of the felt. Sylvia checked. Merson looked at Sylvia and sort of laughed before checking behind.

Sylvia tabled the {Q-Clubs}{9-Clubs} for two pair, kings and queens, and Merson mucked his hand.

Chants of "Shaun The Dealer" filled the Penn & Teller Theater as the flop fell {2-Clubs}{k-Clubs}{5-Spades}. Balsiger's fans shouted at the sight of the king, while Sylvia's rail went silent.

The {k-Diamonds} on the turn sealed the deal, and after the {4-Spades} completed the board, Balsiger's stack was counted down. He is now flirting with 40 million chips.

Jesse Sylvia had the button, and raised to two million. Greg Merson three-bet to 4.8 million from the big blind, Sylvia responded with a four-bet to 10.2 million, and Merson tanked before moving all in for effectively 42.275 million. Sylvia called immediately.

Merson: {k-Diamonds}{k-Hearts}
Sylvia: {a-Hearts}{k-Spades}

Chants of "Ace! Ace! Ace!" filled Sylvia's cheering section.

There was no ace on the {3-Spades}{5-Clubs}{2-Diamonds} flop, but Sylvia picked up a wheel draw.

The {8-Hearts} was a brick, and Sylvia, who entered the final table as the chip leader, was one card away from being eliminated.

The entire Penn & Teller Theater fell silent as the dealer rapped the table one final time and delivered the river card: the {4-Hearts}.

Sylvia's cheering section exploded. Claps, stomps, horns, and screams filled the air as Jack Effel confirmed the chip amounts, and suddenly, after doubling Jake Balsiger, Sylvia is once again the chip leader of the Main Event.

Sylvia showed the {A-Clubs}{Q-Spades} to dominate the {A-Hearts}{10-Spades} for the at-risk Balsiger.

The flop came down {J-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}, and Sylvia stayed in front. Balsiger's rail chanted for a ten, and they got their wish as the {10-Clubs} smacked itself down on the turn to give Balsiger the lead. He wasn't out of the woods yet, though, as Sylvia needed a king, a queen or a nine on the river.

The dealer dealt the final card to the board, and it was the {7-Hearts}. Balsiger spiked his double and found himself right back in the game.
