Vengrin Ends Day 2 With Massive Lead

Level 18 : 5,000/10,000, 1,000 ante
Matt Vengrin - Chip leader
Matt Vengrin - Chip leader

Only 17 of the original 558 players remain in Event #39: $1,500 Seven-Card Stud Hi-Low 8-or-Better, and leading the way with over 20 percent of the chips in play is Matt Vengrin. Vengrin was the only player to bag over quarter of a million chips, stuffing 504,500 chips into his bag. The next closest players are Tony Gill and Joseph Hertzog, who both finished the evening with 249,500 chips.

Joining Vengrin, Gill, and Hertzog, on Day 3 are Canadian notables Mike Leah and Daniel Idema, Poker Hall of Famer Linda Johnson, four-time World Series of Poker bracelet winner Artie Cobb, Kristy Gazes, and a very short-stacked "Back-to-Back" Layne Flack, is looking for bracelet number seven.

Day 2 started with 155 players, and only 56 would make the money. Among the players who fell before the money bubble arrived were Phil Ivey, Cyndy Violette, Nikolai Yakovenko, Yuval Bronshtein, Matt Grapenthien, Dario Minieri, Norman Chad, Ali Eslami, and four-time WSOP bracelet winner Tom Schneider.

The bubble burst at the end of Level 13, where David Levi's eighty-seven low was crushed by Eugene Castro's flush and eighty-six low.

After Levy's elimination a flurry of players were sent to the cage, including Adam Friedman (49th), Phil Hellmuth (42nd), David "Bakes" Baker (38th), Jason Mercier (36th), Toby Lewis (35th), Bryan Devonshire (31st), and Barry Greenstein (21st).

The day ended with the eliminations of Reza Golestani and William Kohler, and Vengrin crippling Flack. The remaining 17 players will return tomorrow at 2 p.m. in the Blue Section of the Amazon Room, where they will play down to a winner. Be sure to join us then for all of the live updates straight from the tournament floor.

Matt Vengrin: {x-}{x-} / {k-Spades}{8-Spades}{2-Diamonds}{a-Spades} / {x-}\

On the last hand of the evening, Flack was crippled by Vengrin, who is now the overwhelming chip leader in Event #39. After betting on seventh, Vengrin showed {10-Spades}{5-Diamonds}{4-Spades} for a flush and an eighty-five low, which had Flack's {a-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}{3-Clubs} for a pair of aces and an eighty-six low dominated.

Vengrin won the hand, bagging over half of a million chips, while Flack will return tomorrow with less than a big big.

All of the chip counts will be entered shortly.

Golestani: {6-Spades}{6-Diamonds}
Paz-Gutierrez: {7-Diamonds}{5-Spades}
Kohler: {6-Clubs}{4-Spades}

Golestani turned over the suicide king ({k-Hearts}) on seventh, Paz-Guiterrez the {j-Diamonds}, and Kohler the {2-Diamonds}. Paz-Guiterrez took the high with a pair of sevens, Kohler took the low with a sixty-four, and Golestani was eliminated.

Layne Flack: {x-}{x-} / {7-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}{3-Hearts} / {x-}

Blomlie was all in on fourth street, turning over {10-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds} for a flush draw, and Flack had him at risk with {5-Hearts}{4-Diamonds} for straight and low draws. Flack binked the {6-Hearts} on the turn, giving him a qualifying low and a straight, but Blomlie could still get half of the pot with a diamond. He bricked off on fifth and sixth, however, and turned over the {j-Clubs} on seventh.

Blomlie earns $5,273 for his 20th-place finish.

Phil Hellmuth Eliminated By Mike Leah

Level 15 : 2,500/5,000, 500 ante
Phil Hellmuth - Eliminated
Phil Hellmuth - Eliminated

We arrived at the end of the hand, but were able to gather the cards on Phil Hellmuth's final hand.

Hellmuth: {J-Diamonds}{K-Clubs}/{K-Hearts}{7-Hearts}{3-Spades}{J-Clubs}
Leah: {A-Spades}{10-Clubs}/{A-Clubs}{10-Hearts}{K-Spades}{8-Spades}

Leah's aces up were better than Hellmuth's kings up. Leah pulled the {6-Diamonds} on seventh street leaving Hellmuth an outside shot at winning, but the {9-Diamonds} offered him no help, ending his run in 42nd place.

This event marked Hellmuth's 99th career WSOP cash.
