Rory Mathews Leads Final 11

Level 21 : 6,000/12,000, 2,000 ante
Rory Mathews has pole position for Day 3.
Rory Mathews has pole position for Day 3.

After ten levels, we've whittled our starting field of 2,100 down to just 11. A total of 168 runners entered Day 2, and Scotland's Rory Mathews bagged up 898,000 to take a small chip lead at the end. Hot on Mathews' heels are fellow top-three stacks Denis Gnidash (815,000) and Norbert Szecsi (738,000).

Mathews held a solid stack for most of the day, and his biggest pot came late, when he eliminated Sergey Tikhonov in a four-bet pot with jacks. Mathews nearly doubled his stack in that hand, and he continued chipping up in small and medium pots until the end of the day.

Action started fast and furious today, as roughly half of the starting field was eliminated by the first break. We lost notables Isaac Baron and Tony Dunst early on, and Matt Matros, who entered the day as chipleader, wasn't far behind when he busted 51st. The last big name to fall was David Chiu, who bowed out in 30th.

Action resumes tomorrow at 1 p.m. right back here in the Amazon Room, so don't forget to tune in for the conclusion of this tournament and the crowning of a bracelet winner.

Yuri Dzivielevski
Yuri Dzivielevski

Chris DeMaci opened for a raise from the cutoff, and action folded to Yuri Dzivielevski in the big blind. He leaned back in his seat, hands in his hoody pocket.

"All in," he said. DeMaci called.

DeMaci: {a-Clubs}{k-Hearts}
Dzivielevski: {k-Spades}{7-Diamonds}

The flop came {j-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}, giving Dzivielevski little besides backdoor possibilities. A {9-Clubs} eliminated those, and the river was the {q-Spades}.

Rachel Kranz

Rachel Kranz opened for 27,000 in the cutoff, and Dana Buck called on the button. Both blinds folded, and we saw the flop heads up.

Kranz checked the {q-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}{8-Hearts} flop, and Buck shoved. Kranz called immediately.

Kranz: {a-Clubs}{q-Spades}
Buck: {k-Clubs}{k-Spades}

Kranz had walked into Buck's trap, and she needed help or she was done. The turn was a {10-Hearts}, giving her nothing. A {7-Clubs} fell on the river, and the last woman remaining in the field was eliminated.

Sergey Tikhonov raised to 25,000 under the gun, and action folded to Rory Mathews in the small blind. Mathews three-bet to 55,000, and the big blind folded. Tikhonov thought briefly before moving all in, and Mathews called immediately.

Mathews: {j-Hearts}{j-Diamonds}
Tikhonov: {10-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}

Tikhonov was in bad shape for his tournament life, and nearly all suspense ended when the flop came {j-Clubs}{6-Spades}{k-Hearts}. The turn was {8-Hearts}, ending Tikhonov's tournament life in 16th.

Mathews Sends Dunst Out

Level 17 : 2,000/4,000, 500 ante
Tony Dunst
Tony Dunst

Tony "Bond18" Dunst moved all in with his last 44,000 in early position. He found one caller, Rory Mathews in the cutoff.

Dunst: {k-Clubs}{k-Diamonds}
Mathews: {9-Hearts}{9-Clubs}

The flop came {j-Hearts}{4-Hearts}{q-Hearts}, and Dunst commented that it wasn't the best start to the board. A {2-Diamonds} came on the turn, and Dunst just needed to a fade a heart or a nine on the end. The {a-Hearts} completed Mathews' flush though, and Dunst was sent to the rail.

Balsiger Cripples Engel

Level 15 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
Jake Balsiger
Jake Balsiger

In three hands, Ari Engel went from having a big stack to being knocked out of the tournament.

In the first hand, Jake Balsiger raised to 5,000 from the button, and Engel called from the small blind. The flop came {3-Spades}{a-Clubs}{8-Hearts}. Engel checked, and Balsiger continued for 4,500. Engel called, bringing the {a-Spades} on the turn. Engel checked again, and Balsiger bet out for 9,000. Engel again called, and the dealer completed the board with the {j-Clubs}. Engel checked a third time, and Balsiger bet out for 14,000. Engel called again. Balsiger turned over {7-Clubs}{9-Diamonds} for a pure bluff. Engel had snapped it off with {a-Diamonds}{6-Spades}. After the hand, Balsiger was down to 118,000, while Engel had 123,000.

On the very next hand, Balsiger again opened the action with a raise to 5,000. Engel three-bet to 12,700 from the small blind. Balsiger then four-bet to 21,500. Engel thought for a few moments, and put in a re-raise to 35,000. Balsiger then six-bet shoved all-in, and Engel went into the tank. He looked like he wanted to call, but was hesitant, and at one point he even said, "I'm taking a minute to compose myself." He did eventually make the call, turning over {9-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}. Balsiger showed {a-Hearts}{7-Spades}, and he would need help. The board gave it to him, running out {k-Hearts}{8-Clubs}{j-Spades}{a-Clubs}{7-Clubs}, giving him two pair.

The stacks were very close, and the dealer counted out Balsiger's remaining stack as 97,800. It turned out Engel had him outchipped by 7,000, but Engel was now severely crippled.

Engel had the button on the next hand, and everyone folded around to him. He min-raised to 4,800, leaving himself just a little behind. Sergey Tikhonov in the small blind was the only caller. Tikhonov mistakenly thought Engel was all in (the dealer was seated between them) and exposed his cards, showing {q-}{3-}. The floor ruled that the hand would continue, and the last of Engel's chips went in the middle on the queen high flop. Engel showed {10-}{10-}, and Tikhonov won the pot with his pair of queens.

Engel was eliminated, Tikhonov is up to 135,000, and Balsiger climbed to 255,000 after his double-up.

Thiago Nishijima has a dominant lead.
Thiago Nishijima has a dominant lead.

Thiago Nishijima opened for a raise in early position, and a fellow big stack to his left reraised him. Nishijima made the call, and the two saw a {q-Hearts}{k-Spades}{7-Hearts} flop heads up.

Nishijima checked, and his opponent came out with 13,200. Nishijima raised to 30,000, and his opponent came back over the top with 50,000. Nishijima pushed all in and was called immediately.

Nishijima: {10-Hearts}{9-Hearts}
Opponent: {q-Clubs}{q-Spades}

Nishijima held a gutshot straight draw and a flush draw, while his opponent had flopped a set of queens. The turn was the {j-Spades}, completing Nishijima's straight, but he still had to fade a pair on the board. The river came a {6-Clubs}, and Nishijima pumped his fist in celebration. He's now the overwhelming chipleader.
