Barny Boatman Wins Event #49 and his First WSOP Bracelet ($546,080)

Level 30 : 50,000/100,000, 10,000 ante

Barny Boatman

Barny Boatman is the latest big name to win a World Series of Poker bracelet after he took down Event #49 of the 2013 WSOP amid emotional scenes in the Amazon Room of the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino.

The third and final day of the $1,500 No Limit Hold’em event started with 21 players, all of them in the money. Kevin MacPhee was the first player eliminated and he was followed to the cashier cage by a steady stream of eliminations. When Michael Quick’s pocket queens lost out to Paul DaSilva’s {A-Hearts}{K-Hearts} – DaSilva turned a flush – the final table was set.

Roger Lussier was the first player eliminated at the final table; his {A-Spades}{8-Clubs} could not come from behind to beat the dominating {A-Hearts}{K-Diamonds} of Brian O’Donoghue.

Seven hands later, Noah Sandler’s tournament came to an abrupt end, again at the hands of O’Donoghue. Sandler committed his stack with {K-Spades}{Q-Spades} on a {K-Clubs}{10-Hearts}{9-Hearts}{k-Hearts} flop but ran into the {5-Hearts}{4-Hearts} of O’Donoghue. Sandler didn’t improve to a full house and the tournament was down to seven players.

Seven became six on Hand 28 of the final table when DaSilva made an ill-timed move with {K-Hearts}{J-Diamonds} on a {8-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}{7-Hearts} flop while Boatman was sat with {9-Clubs}{9-Hearts} for a set of nines. DaSilva received no help from the turn or river and he crashed out in seventh place.

Robin Ylitalo finished in sixth place after a blind-versus-blind confrontation with Boatman. Ylitalo shoved with {K-Hearts}{6-Hearts} and Boatman called with {A-Clubs}{10-Spades}. Ylitalo caught a six on the {6-Spades}{9-Spades}{9-Clubs} flop, but the {4-Spades} turn and {5-Spades} river improved Boatman to a flush and sent Yliatlo home early than many would have expected.

Boatman continued his spell of eliminating players when on Hand 58 Aditya Prasetyo moved all in from the cutoff with pocket tens and Boatman made an easy call from the big blind with a pair of queens. The ace-high board was void of drama and Prasetyo exited.

Taras Kripps’ stack had started to dwindle and he made a move with {K-Clubs}{4-Diamonds}. Unfortunately for Kripps, O’Donoughe woke up with {A-Spades}{10-Clubs} and made the call. Kripps caught a king on the turn of the {5-Diamonds}{j-Clubs}{5-Spades}{K-Diamonds}{Q-Diamonds} board, but the river improved O’Donoghue to a straight and resigned Kripps to a fourth place finish.

Three-handed play lasted almost 30 hands and ended when Van Tran’s tournament did. Tran lost a huge pot that left him with less than four big blinds, but he started to make a comeback by winning four all-in hands in a row. On his fifth attempted he jammed with {J-Clubs}{10-Clubs} and O’Donoghue called with {A-Clubs}{K-Hearts}. A king on the flop and an ace on the river crushed Tran’s hand and the tournament went heads-up.

Boatman and O’Donoghue started the one-on-one battle within one big blind of each other and neither player really ran away with proceedings. The match was less than epic, except in length (174 hands), but the scenes after Hand #276 of the final table were a remarkable sight.

Hand #276 of the final table saw Boatman open to 240,000 and O’Donoghue three-bet to 550,000. Boatman made it 1.1 million and O’Donoughue moved all in. Boatman called with {10-Spades}{10-Clubs} and was up against {A-Spades}{K-Spades}. A board reading {10-Hearts}{2-Hearts}{q-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}{7-Spades} sealed the deal for Boatman, who was mobbed by his rail, his brother Ross leading the celebrations that are sure to go on long into the night.

Hand 274: Brian O'Donoghue received a walk.

Hand 275: O'Donoghue opened to 240,000 and Barny Boatman folded.

Hand 276: Boatman opened to 240,000 and O'Donoghue three-bet to 550,000. Boatman responded with a four-bet to 1.1 million then called when O'Donoghue moved all-in.

Boatman: {10-Clubs}{10-Spades}
O'Donoghue: {A-Spades}{K-Spades}

The crowd rose to their feet as the dealer put the {10-Hearts}{2-Hearts}{q-Hearts} flop onto the felt, improving Boatman to a set but also giving O'Donoghue outs to a straight.

"Deuce! Deuce" Boatman's rail pleaded.

The turn was the {5-Diamonds} and the river the {7-Spades}. With that Boatman had won his first bracelet and his enormous rail's cheers blew the roof off the Rio! Boatman's brother Ross embraced Barny before the British rail chanted, "There's only one Barny Boatman" while Boatman strutted his stuff in front of them. Amazing scenes, indeed.

Van Tran

Hand 101: Van Tran's comeback has been halted and he has become our third place finisher.

Brian O'Donoghue opened to 150,000 from the small blind, Tran three-bet all in and O'Donoghue called. Tran showed {J-Clubs}{10-Clubs} and O'Donoghue the {A-Clubs}{K-Hearts}. By the river the board read {k-Clubs}{4-Spades}{5-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}{a-Spades} and with that Tran's tournament ended.

Boatman Flops a Set and Doubles to the Chip Lead

Level 27 : 25,000/50,000, 5,000 ante
Barney Boatman
Barney Boatman

Hand #79: In one of the biggest pots of the tournament Barny Boatman just doubled up through, till that moment commanding, chip leader Brian O'Donoghue.

Barny Boatman limped in from the small blind but the action would soon explode. Brian O'Donoghue in the big blind made it 150,000 and then it began: Boatman made it 375,000 and O'Donoghue bumped it up to 700,000. Now Boatman made the call and the flop appeared: {5-Spades}{10-Clubs}{3-Diamonds}.

Boatman bet out 400,000 and O'Donoghue raised (again), now to 800,000. Boatman pushed all in for 2.1 million and O'Donoghue made the call. Boatman showed his flopped set with {5-Diamonds}{5-Hearts} and O'Donoghue frustratedly tabled his {K-Diamonds}{K-Hearts}. O'Donoghue needed a king but wouldn't get it: {9-Hearts} on the turn and {9-Spades} on the river. Barny Boatman is now the big stack three handed.

Taras Kripps Eliminated in Fourth Place ($172,087)

Taras Kripps
Taras Kripps

Hand #76: Taras Kripps pushed all in for 875,000 from the small blind and Brian O'Donoghue made the call out of the big blind. Kripps showed {K-Clubs}{4-Diamonds} while O'Donoghue had found a good hand with {A-Spades}{10-Clubs}.

The {5-Diamonds}{J-Clubs}{5-Spades} on the flop didn't do anything for Kripps but the {K-Diamonds} on the turn did. Kripps needed to avoid a queen or ace now but didn't succeed in that mission: {Q-Spades} on the river. O'Donoghue had made a straight and eliminated Kripps that way.

The remaining three players are guaranteed $239,339.

Aditya Prasetyo Eliminated in Fifth Place ($125,372)

Level 27 : 25,000/50,000, 5,000 ante
Aditya Prasetyo
Aditya Prasetyo

Hand #58: Aditya Prasetyo pushed all in from the cut off and Barny Boatman had an easy decision in the big blind with {Q-Spades}{Q-Diamonds}. Aditya Prasetyo had a big hand himself but not big enough: {10-Clubs}{10-Spades}.

Prasetyo was looking for a ten but wouldn't get it. The tens stayed in the deck with {A-Hearts}{6-Spades}{6-Hearts} | {2-Clubs} | {9-Spades} on the table and the one pair beat the other. Aditya Prasetyo received $125,372 for his fifth place. The remaining four players are guaranteed a $172,087 payday.

Robin Ylitalo Eliminated in 6th Place ($92,550)

Robin Ylitalo
Robin Ylitalo

Hand #34: Robin Ylitalo pushed all in from the small blind and Barny Boatman made the call out of the big blind. And just like that, there was a showdown and the Swede was at risk. Ylitalo had {K-Hearts}{6-Hearts} and was behind against Boatman's {A-Clubs}{10-Spades}. Ylitalo was live though and would hit: {6-Spades}{9-Spades}{9-Clubs}.

The running spades ({4-Spades} and {5-Spades}) would give Boatman the flush though and Ylitalo was eliminated. He took home $92,550 while the remaining five players like that were sure of $125,372.

Roger Lussier Eliminated in 9th Place ($40,162)

Roger Lussier
Roger Lussier

Hand #13: Brian O'Donoghue made it 60,000 to go from middle position and he called as Roger Lussier pushed all in for 380,000 from the cut off. Lussier held the {A-Spades}{8-Clubs} but that was the inferior hand as O'Donoghue showed {A-Hearts}{K-Diamonds}.

The {Q-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds} flop didn't change a thing though the {K-Hearts} on the turn did a little. O'Donoghue made a pair but there were split pot outs. The {8-Diamonds} on the river, though hitting Lussier, made no difference however. O'Donoghue made his flush and eliminated Lussier.

Michael Quick Eliminated in 10th Place ($31.153)

Level 25 : 15,000/30,000, 5,000 ante
Michael Quick
Michael Quick

Robin Ylitalo raised it up to 60,000 from early position and Barny Boatman made a three bet behind him. That was when all the action started as Paul Dasilva pushed allin and Michael Quick behind him pushed all in as well. Action folded to Ylitalo who quickly folded. Boatman needed a little more time to think and leaned back. Quick, who's been enjoying himself all day and has had a big smile the entire time, said "This is a big moment for me". Boatman eventually folded and soon everyone found out what the hands were.

Quick, who was at risk for 595,000 total, had {Q-Spades}{Q-Hearts}. Dasilva had slightly more than that and tabled {A-Hearts}{K-Hearts}. The dealer didn't make a whole show about it and rapidly burned and put the cards on the table: {6-Diamonds}{5-Clubs}{2-Hearts} | {3-Hearts} | {7-Hearts}. It went so fast that it took a mili second for Quick to realize that his opponent had backed doored a flush. "Nice hand" he said like a true gentleman.

There's now just nine players left who can all brag on facebook, twitter, instagram, iMessage and all other sorts of new communication that they've made a World Series of Poker final table. Some of them even grabbed their phone and actually called home to let them know. Others celebrated the old fashion way, with people in person on the rail.

We'll be right back as we gather the official chip counts and set up on the rail of the big stage in the middle of the Amazon Room.

Mike Jukich Eliminated in 12th Place ($31,153)

Level 23 : 10,000/20,000, 3,000 ante
Mike Jukich
Mike Jukich

After Paul Dasilva limped under-the-gun for 20,000, Mike Jukich shoved all in for about 450,000 from the button. Robin Ylitalo, who started the day as chip leader but already lost a little bit, reshoved all in and Dasilva folded. Jukich tabled {10-Diamonds}{10-Hearts} and was in trouble against Ylitalo's {Q-Clubs}{Q-Spades}.

The board would make no impact on either player: {K-Spades}{7-Spades}{5-Clubs} | {4-Spades} | {J-Hearts} and Jukich left the tournament just a couple of seconds before the first break.
