Tripp Kirk Leads as Bubble Looms in Event #49

Level 11 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
Tripp Kirk
Tripp Kirk

Tripp Kirk looks to be the chip leader going into Day 2 of Event #49, the $1,500 No Limit Hold’em tournament. Kirk turned his 4,500 starting stack into a tournament leading 101,000 chips and is the man to catch when play resumes on Friday afternoon.

Kirk is a regular on the WSOP Circuit where he has 19 cashes and a handful of final table appearances. Kirk also has two WSOP in the money finishes on his poker résumé; a 70th place finish in a $1,000 buy-in event in 2010 and a 16th place finish in a $1,500 event in 2011.

Hot on Kirk’s heels are a plethora of talented players and big name professional players. Germany’s Thomas Butzhammer has 92,900 chips, which are enough to place him second overall going into Day 2. Butzhammer has two cashes so far at the 2013 WSOP and is odds on to make the money in this event.

Other notables vying for the $546,080 first place prize and the coveted WSOP bracelet include Lily Newhouse (90,000), Ryan Reiss (84,600), Dutchman Govert Metaal (80,900), the in-form Russell Crane (79,700), Eric Baldwin (73,900), Matt Stout (56,500), Erica Lindgren (43,400), David Peters (42,600), and Faraz Jaka (23,500).

Day 2 gets underway at 2 p.m sharp on Friday inside the vast Amazon Room and the players will continue to bet, raise, three-bet and bluff until 10 60-minute levels have been completed. The money bubble is guaranteed to burst because from the 2,247 players who started the day with high hopes only 257 remain and of those, 243 will receive prize money.

Join the PokerNews Live Reporting team from 2 p.m local time as we bring you all the action, as it happens, from Event #49 of the 2013 WSOP.

**Late Edit** We received a message through that indicates Kirk may not be the chip leader, but a Brent Becker is. Becker has apparently bagged up 108,400 chips which would make him the man to catch. As soon as the official chip counts are in from the WSOP, we will update accordingly.

One Sick Individual

Level 7 : 150/300, 25 ante
Joseph Cheong
Joseph Cheong

We were walking around and just spotted Joseph Cheong who was playing with a bigger stack. Everyone knows that Cheong is a dangerous individual. As Sam Grafton was saying at the table he is a "sick individual".

The one hand we happened to catch involved Grafton and Cheong. Grafton had bet on a board {q-Hearts}{a-Spades}{2-Clubs}{10-Clubs}{a-Diamonds}. Cheong then put a giant stack of purple and yellows out in front. This was to signify he was putting Grafton all in. Grafton took a minute and then mucked.

As he mucked he pleaded, "Please don't show me a bluff!"

Cheong obliged and gave his hand to the dealer faced down.

Grafton metioned, "I don't pay in high roller events because I don't want to play with people like you! Your a sick individual!" Grafton giving credit where credit is due as the former November Niner knows how to beat his opponent whether the buy in is $100,000 or just $1,500.

Must Be Nice to Be Athanasios Polychronopoulos

Level 4 : 75/150, 0 ante

We were having a chat with Athanasios Polychronopoulos when he casually called 1,400 from a guy who pushed all in preflop. Polychronopoulos woke up with {a-Spades}{k-Hearts} and had his opponent deeply in trouble with {a-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}. The board ran out {j-Diamonds}{2-Clubs}{k-Clubs}{2-Spades}{j-Hearts}. Just like that Polychronopoulos easily knocked out another opponent.

Polychronopoulos is on a tear and already won a $1,500 not but a few weeks ago. With 12,600 already today it must be nice to be Mr. Athanasios Polycronopoulos.

Wheeler Walks Into a Set (and a Flush)

Level 3 : 50/100, 0 ante
Jason Wheeler (photo: event 28)
Jason Wheeler (photo: event 28)

On a {4-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}{10-Clubs} flop we saw Jason Wheeler bet 425 after a check from the big blind. A player in late position made the call and the decision was back on the big blind. He thought about if for some time, meanwhile playing with his chips. For a moment it looked like he was about to call, but eventually he put all his chips together as one stack and moved them forward; 2,500 total all in. Wheeler immediately informed how much the smooth caller had, and eventually moved in as well. Wheeler knew he was in trouble after the caller insta-called as well:

Big blind{7-Clubs}{J-Clubs}
Jason Wheeler{J-Spades}{J-Diamonds}
Caller{4-Spades}{4-Diamonds}

Wheeler had a lot of catching up to do but would fail on that mission. The {5-Clubs} on the turn spelled doom for him and the {7-Diamonds} on the river wasn't the one card in the deck he needed to scoop the side pot. Wheeler needed to pay another 2,975 for the side-pot, but still has about 9,000 left in his stack.

Another Day, Another $1,500

It's time for another $1,500 No-Limit Hold'em tournament today. But just another one doesn't do tournaments like this justice since they are hugely popular. There already have been some $1,500 No-Limit Hold'em tournament with the biggest one of course being the Millionaire Maker at the beginning of the series. The fields have been massive and so were the first prizes.

Today's $1,500 No-Limit Hold'em Event might be just a little bit easier to maneuver through than the past ones, since the $111,111 One Drop High Roller still has a lot of World Class players participating. But make no mistake, there are more than enough tough players left who are willing to pony up $1,500 for a no-limit hold'em tournament. To win it you must outsmart all of them, and getting lucky in a sport or two might come in handy as well.

The tournament will start at noon sharp. Players will start out with 4,500 in chips and the first level will be 25/25. Levels will last an hour and they'll play 11 of them today. We'll be there from start to finish to bring you all the updates.
