Billirakis Takes a Surprise Pot

Level 12 : 800/1,600, 0 ante
Steve Billirakis is among the leaders after dragging a large pot with a pair of eights.
Steve Billirakis is among the leaders after dragging a large pot with a pair of eights.

We found Steve Billirakis in late position, calling a bet of 15,600 from an opponent who fired pot on fourth street with the board reading {5-Clubs}{8-Spades}{q-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}. The river brought a likely-brick: {k-Spades}. The first player, who only had about 13,000 left, thought briefly before checking. Billirakis examined his opponent's stack before making what appeared to be a resigned check back.

The first player flipped {j-}{10-}{9-}{8-} for a pair eights and a missed wrap. Billirakis looked at his opponent's hand for a second, then picked out the {a-Spades}{8-Clubs} from his own hand for a pair of eights with a better kicker before throwing down the {10-Spades}{9-Clubs} for his own missed draw.

Somerville Stacks One

Level 12 : 800/1,600, 0 ante
Jason Somerville came in with a short stack but has improved his position.
Jason Somerville came in with a short stack but has improved his position.

Jason Somerville opened for 3,500 and got shoved on by a short stack. When action folded back to him, he made the call.

Somerville: {j-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}{7-Spades}
Opponent: {k-Hearts}{k-Spades}{5-Spades}{2-Hearts}

The affable pro flopped a set when the dealer spread the {9-Hearts}{8-Hearts}{q-Clubs} on the felt. His opponent nailed a flush draw when the {3-Hearts} turned to retake the lead, but it was Somerville scooping the pot when the {3-Clubs} river gave him a boat.

Chidwick Takes From Billirakis

Level 12 : 800/1,600, 0 ante

Stephen Chidwick and Steve Billirakis both checked a {3-Spades}{10-Clubs}{2-Hearts} flop, and a {7-Hearts} turned. Billirakis bet out 5,500 from the small blind, and Chidwick raised to 18,000. Billirakis made the call, and a {6-Spades} finished out the board. Billirakis checked, and Chidwick checked it back.

Billirakis showed {a-}{k-}{q-}{10-} with ace-high hearts, but he hadn't been able to catch Chidwick's {10-Hearts}{10-Spades}{5-Spades}{3-Hearts} for top set.

Players are now on a 20-minute break.
