Welcome to PokerNews' Day 3 coverage of Event #58: $1,500 Mixed-Max No-Limit Hold'em.

The starting field of 1,475 entrants is down to just 10 players, each looking to capture a coveted World Series of Poker gold bracelet, as well as the first-place prize of $405,428.

On top of the chip counts entering Day 3 is Jared Jaffee with 1.583 million, the only player with a seven-figure stack. This marks the Brooklyn native's 12th career WSOP cash and all that stands between him and his first bracelet are nine opponents. Second in chips is Mark "dipthrong" Herm with 927,000 and he is followed by two-time bracelet winner Brandon Cantu with 918,000. For Cantu, this marks his seventh cash of the 2014 WSOP and despite his critics, Cantu has a chance to join an exclusive group by capturing a third bracelet.

Here are the Day 3 seating assignments and chip counts:

Michael Coleman shoved on the the button for about 150,000 and found action from Mike Watson in the small blind. Watson led with {A-}{Q-} against Coleman's {K-}{10-} and Coleman found no held from the board, ending his run in 10th place.

Cantu the Kickboxer

The board read {4-Spades}{7-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds} by fourth street when Brandon Cantu checked from the small blind, eliciting a bet of 35,000 from Gustavo Kamei.

After Cantu flatted the river came {7-Hearts} and he checked once again, with Kamei following through and firing nearly half his stack for a 120,000 wager.

Cantu snap-called and waited to see what Kamei could come up with, and when he saw {Q-Hearts}{J-Clubs} hit the table, he revealed his {k-Hearts}{q-Clubs} triumphantly to outkick Kamei.

Gustavo Kamei Eliminated in 9th Place ($27,509)

Level 21 : 6,000/12,000, 2,000 ante

Gustavo Kamei - 9th Place

Moments after getting chopped down in a previous clash with Brandon Cantu, Gustavo Kamei just fell with Rio's resident lightning rod delivering the finishing blow.

Kamei open-shoved for roughly 175,000 and Cantu called him down with {a-Spades}{j-Clubs} to find himself in dominant position over the Brazilian's {a-}{7-}.

The final board brought no help to Kamei, coming {q-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}{3-Spades}{5-Diamonds}{6-Spades} to leave him with no pair — and no chips. With that, the eight remaining runners headed for the redraw before reassembling at the final two tables.

Anton Smirnov Eliminated in 8th Place ($53,614)

Level 21 : 6,000/12,000, 2,000 ante
Anton Smirnov - 8th Place
Anton Smirnov - 8th Place

The pot was raised an indeterminate amount before the flop, and the first three board cards read {7-Clubs}{2-Spades}{5-Diamonds} when we caught the action.

Anton Smirnov checked from the small blind and Brandon Cantu — who had won several of the previous pots by raising preflop and continuing for 28,000 to force folds — made it 49,000 to go this time.

Smirnov quickly made the call and the turn card came {8-Spades}, prompting another tap of the table by Smirnov and another bet by Cantu, this time for 120,000.

After pausing for a beat to assess his stack, Smirnov tossed a few yellow T1000 chips forward and announced himself all in. Cantu immediately shot out of his chair and asked for a count, and as soon as he heard the raise was for 300,000 more he forcefully announced the call.

Cantu: {k-Hearts}{8-Clubs}
Smirnov: {a-Spades}{3-Spades}

Cantu was correct in determining his turned top pair to be best, and Smirnov was left searching the deck for aces, fours, or spades to catch up. The river came {9-Diamonds}, though, and Smirnov missed his multiple draws to go bust, while Cantu continued to roll through this third and final day of play.

Jaffee Pays Peng Off

Level 22 : 8,000/16,000, 2,000 ante

The pot contained about 100,000 or so with the board showing {5-Spades}{6-Clubs}{k-Diamonds}{6-Spades} by the turn, and Jared Jaffee led out for 57,000 from the small blind.

Xiao Peng took her time to think things through before flatting, and the river card was the {k-Hearts}.

Jaffee continued to press the action with a bet of 131,000, but after cutting out a stack of green T25000 chips and riffling them in silence, Peng assembled a stack and raised to 346,000 total.

Jaffee was agonized by the spot he found himself in, and he rechecked his hole cards while separating the calling chips from the rest of his stack.

"Are you ever bluffing here?" he asked to both Peng and himself. "Are you ever bluffing here?"

Finally, after a minute or so of thought Jaffee slammed in the stack and looked Peng up, only to see that she had filled up on the river with {k-Spades}{4-Spades}. The huge pot was pushed to Peng, while Jaffee could only shake his head in frustration.

Jeff Gross Eliminated in 7th Place ($53,614)

Level 22 : 8,000/16,000, 2,000 ante
Jeff Gross - 7th Place
Jeff Gross - 7th Place

Mike Watson min-raised to 32,000 in the cutoff and Jeff Gross three-bet shoved for 139,000 from the button. The blinds folded and Watson went into the tank for about two minutes.

"I'm too lucky, I call," he said, showing {A-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}

"Oh man, thought you had the ace-four," said Gross as he showed {5-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}, setting the stage for a coin flip.

The flop fell {Q-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}, giving Gross a set of fives and a commanding lead.

"Good flop," commented Gross.

The turn, however, was not very good for Gross as it was the {8-Diamonds}.

"Well that's just a silly card," quipped Gross.

Sure enough, the {K-Diamonds} fell on the river to give Watson a flush to eliminate Gross in seventh place.

"You're right," Gross joked to Watson. "Too lucky."

Gross shook Watson's hand and after going to the payout desk, Gross returned to shake the rest of the players' hands before making his exit.

Cantu Crippled by Jaffee's Counterpunch

Level 22 : 8,000/16,000, 2,000 ante
Brandon Cantu just endured one of the worst beats, maybe, in the history of the World Series
Brandon Cantu just endured one of the worst beats, maybe, in the history of the World Series

A raising war just erupted between two of the biggest stacks in play, as Jared Jaffee and Brandon Cantu went toe-to-toe and squared off with half of the chips in the tournament on the line.

The excitement began when Cantu opened to 35,000 from the button, and Jaffee three-bet to 108,000 out of the big blind.

Cantu asked for a count and then elected on a four-bet to 275,000, with Jaffee taking very little time to announce himself all in for 1.568 million total.

The huge five-bet shove made Cantu shoot up out of his chair, but the word "call" came out of his mouth as fast as he stood up.

Jaffee: {k-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}
Cantu: {q-Diamonds}{q-Hearts}

"No!," cried Cantu when he caught sight of the cooler. "Gahhh!"

"Hold up one time..." said Jaffee quietly to himself while turning away from the table.

The dealer waited a beat to let the drama build, before sliding the {a-Hearts}{a-Spades}{q-Spades} flop across the felt.

"How is this real!" screamed Jaffee when he saw that Cantu had caught up. "Why?!"

Cantu remained silent while the turn card came {2-Clubs}, but the anxious look on his face betrayed the intensity of the emotions he was no doubt experiencing. He stared straight at the board and waited to see how the deck would decide his destiny.

River: {k-Spades}

"Yes!," erupted Jaffee when the king came on the river to give him the massive double.

"No!" bellowed Cantu at the exact same time, throwing his water bottle across the room toward Sailor Roberts' World Championship banner. "No!"

The pain clearly evident on his face, Cantu circled the table, with Mike Matusow on hand to affirm that "that pot was for all the chips in the tournament" as his friend struggled to regain his composure. Jaffee, meanwhile, celebrated with David Williams, who is nearby playing Day 3 of the $3,000 Omaha Hi-Low event.

Brandon Cantu open-shoved for his last 12 big blinds or so, and Xiao Peng decided to look him up with {a-Hearts}{9-Hearts}.

Cantu could only muster the {k-Clubs}{5-Clubs}, and while he flopped a gutshot straight draw on the {j-Spades}{9-Clubs}{10-Hearts}, the turn {{6-Spades}} and river ({3-Clubs}) bricked off to send him to the rail just short of the unofficial final table of five.
