Jeff Smith Wins Event #9: $1,000 No-Limit Hold'em ($323,125)

Level 29 : 40,000/80,000, 10,000 ante
Jeff Smith - 1st Place
Jeff Smith - 1st Place

American Jeffrey Smith from Encinitas, Calif., has captured his first World Series of Poker bracelet in Event #9: $1,000 No-Limit Hold'em and the top prize of $323,125. Smith defeated runner-up Danny Nguyen after a long three-hour heads-up match that saw a chip lead change almost every couple of hands.

Smith scored his first WSOP cash in last year's Millionaire Maker event, earning $2,704 for a 605th-place finish. According to Smith's Hendon Mob page, his previous best cash was a 3rd-place finish for $25,800 in a 2008 LA Poker Classic side event. Smith's total career earnings before today were just under $46,000 so he has multiplied that by almost six times.

In the final hand, Smith raised to 160,000 and Nguyen pushed all in. Smith made a fast call and flipped over {a-Diamonds}{9-Hearts} to Nguyen's {q-Hearts}{6-Hearts}. The board came down {9-Clubs}{3-Hearts}{5-Spades}{9-Spades}{10-Diamonds} and Smith's trip nines won the pot. Nguyen made $199,829 for his runner-up finish.

"All in," Nguyen announced, overbetting the pot. Smith snap-called.

Smith: {a-Hearts}{j-Diamonds}
Nguyen: {9-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}

"I need an eight," Nguyen said.

The dealer didn't give him one, burning and turning the {k-Diamonds}.

Frank Patti Eliminated in 3rd Place ($138,160)

Frank Patti - 3rd Place
Frank Patti - 3rd Place

Hand 138: Jeff Smith opened to 80,000 on the button, Danny Nguyen called in the small blind and Frank Patti moved all in from the big blind. Smith got out of the way while Nguyen made the call to put Patti at risk.

Patti: {a-Diamonds}{4-Spades}
Nguyen: {k-Clubs}{q-Clubs}

Patti was heading toward the flop, looking for a big time double up. The dealer laid out a {k-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}{8-Spades} flop and Nguyen took the lead with his pair of kings. Patti would once again need a three-outer to save his tournament life. The turn {3-Diamonds} gave Patti nine more outs with a flush draw. The river {5-Spades} gave Nguyen the check mark and Patti was eliminated.

Hand 87: Jeff Smith raised to 60,000 and Danny Nguyen called from the button. John Fontana pushed all in in the small blind and Smith pushed his big stack over the top, forcing Nguyen out.

Fontana: {9-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}
Smith: {j-Spades}{j-Clubs}

Behind with the smaller pocket pair, Fontana couldn't get any help on the {k-Hearts}{3-Hearts}{2-Spades}{10-Hearts}{3-Spades} board and he was eliminated in 4th place for $99,644. The remaining three players are now guaranteed $138,160.

Chris Haugo - 5th Place
Chris Haugo - 5th Place

Hand 57: Haugo moved all in under the gun, and action folded to Nguyen, who called immediately upon seeing his cards.

Haugo: {a-Hearts}{k-Clubs}
Nguyen: {10-Clubs}{10-Hearts}

The {6-Clubs}{4-Clubs}{8-Clubs} flop gave both players flush draws, though Haugo's was obviously better. A {5-Diamonds} turn meant Haugo needed to improve on the river to survive, unless a {7-} hit, which would mean a chopped pot. The {4-Spades} paired the board, leaving Haugo felted.

"Good hand," he said, shaking Nguyen's hand. "Good luck."

Hand 22: Chris Hunichen opened to 50,000, Danny Nguyen called from the big blind, and the two saw a {k-Clubs}{6-Spades}{4-Spades} flop. Danny slid out a bet and Chris snap-shoved all in. Nguyen quickly called putting Hunichen at risk.

Nguyen: {k-Spades}{7-Spades}
Hunichen: {a-Spades}{3-Spades}

Hunichen was behind but had outs to a flush and his ace was live. The turn {2-Diamonds} and river {6-Hearts} gave no aid, however, and Hunichen was knocked out in sixth place.

This is the second straight year with a sixth-place finish for Hunichen, as he took sixth in last year's WSOP Millionaire Maker event for $229,575.
