Birman Leads $10,000 Seven Card Stud Championship Final Table; Martin, Grapes, Yu, Obst Chasing

Level 20 : 10,000/20,000, 2,000 ante
Yaniv Birman
Yaniv Birman

Yaniv Birman might not be a household name in $10k Championship events but he impressed on Day 2 of Event #38: $10,000 Seven Card Stud Championship. Birman sailed through the 10 scheduled levels high in the standings, handling a big stack for the vast majority of the day. Birman never found himself in trouble of getting short and eventually parked in the top spot on the leaderboard.

He's pacing the eight-handed final table which features a star-studded line-up of players who made it through a tough 83-strong field. Birman will return to 40 big bets, having bagged 958,000. On one of the final hands of the day, he scooped a modestly sized pot to put his name just ahead of multiple bracelet winner Jesse Martin (916,000).

It will be interesting to see whether Birman can prevail on such a talented table. His WSOP résumé reveals just three cashes, two of them earned at the main series. But he's already been to a final table full of renowned mixed games grinders. Back in 2016, Birman took sixth place in the $1,500 Stud event, competing against the likes of Shaun Deeb, Adam Friedman, Max Pescatori or John Monnette.

This time, he finds himself in slightly different company but the quality is pretty much identical. The aforementioned Martin to his left, followed by Chicago's Stud specialist Matt Grapenthien (507,000) and two of the most versatile poker players in the world: Ben Yu (559,000) and James Obst (216,000).

Birman is certainly not scared of anyone. He was by far the most active player on Day 2, entering more pots than anyone in the room. He was often seen caught bluffing on the river or making a hardly predictable two pair. That promises an interesting chip-flow for the final stages.

Obst and Lars Gronning are the only two players in possession of fewer than 10 big bets, but nobody among the final eight is devastatingly short. The two-hour levels on Day 2 helped the deeper structure. The play during the middle stage was rather slow, even though big pots have been traded and play seemed entertaining all the way through.

The field was slowly dwindling down to final two tables after a dinner break. The bubble was looming around, and while Obst was somewhere in the second half of the rankings at the time, he was the main hero of the key stretch. He guarded his stack with a masterful precision during bubble play and eventually became the man responsible for breaking the deadlock.

James Obst
James "Andy McLEOD" Obst had a strong showing on Day 2

Obst first dispatched Daniel Negreanu in 15th place and then eliminated Jordan Siegel on the stone bubble, which lasted about an hour. Michael McKenna was the one who capitalized the most. McKenna was close to becoming the unpopular bubble boy, running with aces into trip tens of Nicholas Seiken. McKenna survived after hitting another ace, eventually filling up, and sneaked inside the money.

Still, McKenna would be first to go thereafter, followed by Seiken and former bracelet winners Perry Friedman and Todd Brunson. Al Barbieri walked away in ninth and the final eight exchanged a few jabs at the final table before wrapping it up for the night.

They'll return on Wednesday, June 20 at 2 p.m. to continue battling in front of the TV cameras in the "Thunderdome" stage in the Amazon Room. Whoever will claim the bracelet will also take home $236,238 so make sure to come back to PokerNews for the continuous live updates from the final table battle.

Todd Brunson Eliminated in 10th Place ($19,428)

Level 19 : 10,000/20,000, 2,000 ante
Todd Brunson
Todd Brunson

Todd Brunson was among the players who had just peanuts in front of them after the long bubble.

He put his money in against Yaniv Birman who made a flush with {5-Hearts}{2-Hearts}{4-Hearts}{J-Hearts}{A-Hearts}{10-Spades}{10-Diamonds}

Brunson wasn't drawing dead before river as he had {5-}{3-}{5-}{9-}{K-}{J-} with four clubs.

He peeled the river. "It's black!"

Then he looked at the card and, unfortunately for him, it was the {2-Spades}. Brunson departed in 10th place and the remaining field combined to the last table.

Nicholas Seiken
Nicholas Seiken

Nicholas Seiken was down to fewer than one bet on the break and he registered in the Big Bet Mix, expecting to bust shortly. However, he managed to double twice and ran his stack to about 80,000. But his comeback was halted shortly thereafter.

Seiken made it two bets after Yaniv Birman completed and Birman called. Seiken bet on fourth and Birman called. The rest of the money went in on fourth where Birman hit a pair of sixes. He led out, Seiken raised and Birman put him all in for 7,000 more.

Nicholas Seiken: {A-Clubs}{5-Hearts} / {A-Spades}{10-Clubs}
Yaniv Birman: {10-Hearts}{2-Spades} / {10-Spades}{6-Hearts}{6-Clubs}

Seiken made aces up as he spiked two jacks but Birman caught third six on sixth street and eliminated him in 12th place.

Seiken: {A-Clubs}{5-Hearts} / {A-Spades}{10-Clubs}{J-Clubs}{J-Diamonds} / {K-}

Michael McKenna: {9-Hearts}{3-Spades} / {J-Diamonds}{8-Spades}{9-Clubs}{A-Diamonds} / {4-Hearts}
Matt Grapenthien: {A-Spades}{9-Spades} / {A-Clubs}{3-Diamonds}{4-Spades}{Q-Hearts} / {J-Spades}

Jordan Siegel Bubbles the 2018 Stud Championship

Level 18 : 8,000/16,000, 2,000 ante
Jordan Siegel
Jordan Siegel

Jordan Siegel was all in on third for a dust and four other players had a shot at knocking him out. James Obst reduced the hand to heads-up when he hit a pair of sixes on fourth street.

Jordan Siegel: {10-Hearts}{4-Spades} / {10-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}
James Obst: {5-Clubs}{4-Diamonds} / {6-Clubs}{6-Hearts}

Siegel had split tens and was in good shape but Obst's hand rolled out {5-Clubs}{4-Diamonds} / {6-Clubs}{6-Hearts}{K-Spades}{J-Hearts} / {4-Hearts}. He hit two pair and Siegel sweated his river card but he finished unimproved with {10-Hearts}{4-Spades} / {10-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}{9-Diamonds} / {Q-Clubs}.

Siegel bowed out in 14th place and the rest of the field was guaranteed at least $14,910.

McKenna Spikes a Miracle Ace

Level 18 : 8,000/16,000, 2,000 ante
Michael McKenna
Michael McKenna

Michael McKenna was short-stacked but he found aces and tried to spin it up. Unfortunately for him, Nicholas Seiken was dealt trip tens and McKenna's tournament life was on the edge of a cliff.

Michael McKenna: {A-Hearts}{A-Clubs}/{3-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}
Nicholas Seiken: {10-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}/{10-Clubs}{J-Hearts}

McKenna, however, hit the {A-Diamonds} on fifth street and Seiken jumped out of his chair, cursing.

McKenna eventually filled up, hitting another trey on the river and doubled through his rival.

Daniel Negreanu was all in on third street, facing off against James Obst. Negreanu started with a pair of eights but Obst was ahead with jacks.

Daniel Negreanu: {8-Spades}{8-Clubs}{A-Hearts}{5-Spades}{K-Spades}{2-Diamonds}{7-Spades}

Brunson Enjoys Double Crying Time

Level 16 : 6,000/12,000, 1,500 ante
Todd Brunson
Todd Brunson

If anyone witnessed a hand that play out between Todd Brunson, Yaniv Birman and Joseph Cappello, they would enjoy mostly the final scene that unfolded after the river round.

First things first, Cappello led out on fourth and Brunson and Birman both called. Cappello continued on fifth and Brunson raised, but all three remained in the contest for two bets. Brunson bet on sixth again, earning two calls again.

Then he bet on the river and both of his opponents laid their hands down, with the final situation looking as follows:

Todd Brunson: {X-}{X-} / {J-Hearts}{10-Clubs}{5-Spades}{Q-Hearts} / {X-}
Yaniv Birman: {X-}{X-} / {5-Clubs}{K-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}{8-Diamonds} / {X-} - fold
Joseph Cappello: {X-}{X-} / {5-Hearts}{K-Hearts}{6-Spades}{7-Diamonds} / {X-} - fold

"You deserve this one, Todd, but I had a big draw," Cappello said.

"You had a big draw? I had a big f***ing draw!" Birman replied, showing {2-Clubs}{3-Clubs}{4-Diamonds} for a straight flush draw on fifth street. Cappello then countered, opening his flush draw and open-ended draw.

"How is there no club coming? Brick, brick, brick," Birman sighed.

Cappello continued, moaning about his own blank river.

Brunson, in the meantime, silently stacked the newly earned chips with a laugh on his face.

"How could you fade two draws? There were no aces out!" Birman still couldn't believe that he didn't get there. But while Birman and Cappello lost this one, they are both still playing very healthy stacks.
