Arieh Leads the Final Six in the $50,000 Poker Players Championship, Ivey Falls in 8th

The 2019 Poker Players Championship final table has been set as the 74-player field dwindled to the last six contenders. They will battle it out on Friday, June 28, at 12 p.m. local time with the $1,099,311 top-prize and the Chip Reese Memorial Trophy on the line.

Josh Arieh is leading the final six with 6,220,000. Arieh led the tournament after Day 1, stayed in top five after Day 2 and trailed only Phil Ivey coming into Day 4. While Ivey's today's session at the table was a Thursday to forget, Arieh controlled the action on the outer feature table.

Final table lineup:

SeatPlayerCountryChip Count
1Shaun DeebUnited States2,485,000
2Bryce YockeyUnited States4,465,000
3Dan CatesUnited States1,260,000
4Phillip HuiUnited States4,135,000
5John EspositoUnited States3,630,000
6Josh AriehUnited States6,220,000

Arieh first approached the 6-million mark when he picked off Dario Sammartino in pot-limit omaha in which he'd flopped threes full of eights. Bryce Yockey took over the chip lead for a brief stint but Arieh would soon reestablish himself as the leader.

Meanwhile, Ivey took a beat after beat on the TV table and his stack kept plummeting. The 10-time bracelet winner eventually bubbled the final redraw, adding the eighth-place finish to his collection of PPC cashes (this was his fourth).

The play resumed for another two hours with the field spread into two groups. Arieh, Yockey, and John Esposito were all flirting the lead while Shaun Deeb, Phil Hui, Dan Cates, and David Oppenheim oscillated between 10 and 15 big bets.

Hui was able to hit a streak of winning hands to separate himself from the bottom stacks and even eclipse Esposito in the standings. Oppenheim, on the other hand, started to slip. He fell under five bets and, unfortunately for him, couldn't recover.

The end of Oppenheim's run would come in a three-way clash in omaha hi-lo. Following a four-bet action on a flop, the turn filled a king-high straight for Esposito and Yockey. Oppenheim put in his last chips, holding top two pair and a Broadway draw, but the river bricked and the other two players chopped his stack as they both held king-queen in their respective hands.

Oppenheim's elimination brought Day 4 to its conclusion and the final six players will continue in a set of razz hands. There are 57 minutes left to play in level 22 with the 100,000/200,000 limits.

Neither of the final six players had previously made it this far. Deeb had notched two PPC cashes in his career with a 7th place from 2017 being his better one. Arieh had made money once, finishing 13th back in 2011 and tomorrow will bring a debut PPC payday for the remaining four finalists.

Come back to PokerNews on Friday at 12 p.m. to follow the live updates from the final table with one of the most prestigious poker tournaments on the planet about to crown its 2019 champion.

Yockey led out again on the {9-Hearts} turn, and Oppenheim called. Esposito raised, Yockey called, and Oppenheim called off his last 175,000.

Yockey checked the {5-Hearts} river, and Esposito bet. Yockey raised, Esposito made it three bets, and Yockey called.

Yockey tabled {k-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}{4-Clubs} and Esposito showed {a-Clubs}{k-Clubs}{q-Spades}{j-Hearts} for the nuts for both players, while Oppenheim's {a-Hearts}{q-Hearts}{j-Clubs}{10-Diamonds} left him one spot short of the official final table.

Razz

Phil Ivey was the bring in and John Esposito completed a seven. Dan Cates called with a jack and Ivey defended. Esposito bet on fourth street and both players called. On fifth street, Esposito continued. Cates folded and Ivey called all in for his last 65,000

Phil Ivey: {5-}{a-} / {k-}{8-}{6-}
John Esposito: {4-}{3-} / {7-}{2-}{4-}
Dan Cates: {x-}{x-} / {j-}{6-}{6-} - folded on fifth street

After fifth street, Ivey found himself with a king-eight to Esposito's pair of fours. The dealer then dealt sixth street face up and the river face down.

Phil Ivey: {5-}{a-} / {k-}{8-}{6-}{5-} / {x-}
John Esposito: {4-}{3-} / {7-}{2-}{4-}{2-} / {x-}

After pairing a five, Ivey still found himself with ahead with a king-eight while Esposito had made two pair.

Esposito turned over {k-} on his final card to improve to a king-seven. Ivey then turned over his final card, {a-} to pair his ace and finish the hand with his king-eight, the second best hand as he was eliminated from the tournament.

With seven players remaining, the field is taking a short break to move to the unofficial final table. Seating assignments and chip counts will be provided shortly.

Dario Sammartino
Dario Sammartino

2-7 Triple Draw

David Oppenheim raised in the small blind, Dario Sammartino three-bet and Oppenheim called.

Oppenheim pitched two, Sammartino one and Oppenheim check-called a bet from Sammartino.

Oppenheim drew two again while Sammartino was good. Oppenheim checked, Sammartino bet and Oppenheim called.

Both players patted on the final draw and Oppenheim checked, trying to get action from Sammartino. Sammartino, however, checked back and Oppenheim took it down with {7-}{6-}{5-}{4-}{2-}.

Sammartino was left with 190,000 and he got it in on the next hand, facing off against Oppenheim again.

Both drew two on the first two draws and Sammartino pitched one on the final draw. Oppenheim still needed two.

Oppenheim opened {7-}{6-}{2-} and he expressed some frustration upon peeling a {6-}. The other card was a {4-}.

Sammartino had {8-}{5-}{4-}{2-} and Josh Arieh observed that Oppenheim had three outs, should Sammartino pair an eight. He indeed flipped an {8-} to bust his draw and Oppenheim tackled him in two consecutive hands.

Shaun Deeb was moved from the TV table, taking a seat between Bryce Yockey and Josh Arieh.

Brown: {7-Hearts}{3-Clubs} / {3-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}{6-Clubs}{a-Diamonds} / {x-}

Sammartino finished with a seven-five low and a pair of fives.

Who Will Make The Final Table of the $50,000 Poker Players Championship?

Phil Ivey
Phil Ivey

The penultimate day of Event #58: $50,000 Poker Players Championship has arrived and 12 players remain in one of the most prestigious events of the entire 2019 World Series of Poker.

It has taken over 30 hours of play across three days among the best players on the planet to reach this point. The tournament’s mixed game format was designed to test every participant’s overall poker prowess and it has not disappointed as the remaining 12 come back from what was a total field size of 74 this afternoon with players all in the money and their sights set on reaching the final table of six. Last night played until Chris Klodnicki was the unlucky 13th-placed player, missing out on the money.

Phil Ivey finds himself in a familiar situation entering Day 4 as chip leader with a massive stack of 4,775,000. Ivey was also the chip leader among the 38 players who returned for Day 3 yesterday, picking up where he left off and nearly quadrupling his chip total throughout the ten-plus hours of play.

Second in chips coming into the day is Josh Arieh, whose stack of 4,029,000 is the only other one within immediate reach of Ivey. The list of names does not stop there, with Shaun Deeb (2,450,000), Bryce Yockey (2,386,000), and David Oppenheim (2,108,000) rounding out the top five as the only ones over the two-million mark.

Oppenheim enters the day as one of only four players left in the tournament not to have won a WSOP bracelet in their careers. Joining him in pursuit of their first bracelet are Dario Sammartino, who took third place in the $10K H.O.R.S.E. earlier this year for $184,854, Talal Shakerchi (785,000), and “Jungleman” Dan Cates (319,000).
