Day 2 of Event #45: $1,500 Pot-Limit Omaha 8-Handed Begins at Noon.

A total of 97 players out of 1,438 made Day 2 of Event #45: $1,500 Pot-Limit Omaha 8-Handed, seeing a near doubling of last year’s field size, and today they will play down to a final table of five. The 1,438 entrants created a prizepool of $1,918,356 and a first place prize of $311,782, which all eyes will be on.

Leading the way is Joshua Stefansky who in the late levels of last night found himself catching a bluff of Chino Rheem to double up and land at the top of the chip counts. He comes into today with a stack of 1,660,000, the only stack over 1,000,000 in the tournament.

Following Stefansky’s lead is WSOP circuit ring winner John Riordan, who comes into today with the second largest stack at 972,000. Riordan is no stranger to playing higher stakes PLO, given his multiple final tables at the Poker Masters and U.S. Poker Open as well as a victory in the big bet mix at The U.S. Poker Open. He has yet to win a bracelet and today will look to put himself in prime position to do so.

Players return to Level 18 with blinds at 5,000/10,000 with a 10,000 big blind ante. Rather than the 40-minute levels of Day 1, Day 2 levels will last 60-minutes each and players will have 15-minute breaks after every two levels, as well as a 60-minute dinner break at about 6:30. When they reach the final five, players will bag up for the night and return for Day 3 on Thursday (at a time yet to be determined) to play down to a winner.

Williams Sends Rheem to the Rail

Level 18 : 5,000/10,000, 10,000 ante
Chino Rheem
Chino Rheem

Chino Rheem had doubled up a short stack in the opening minutes, then got his last few blinds in preflop against David Williams.

Chrino Rheem: {a-Spades}{q-Diamonds}{9-Spades}{8-Hearts}
David Williams: {q-Clubs}{q-Spades}{j-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}

Rheem needed help against the queens of Williams, but the {2-Spades}{5-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}{k-Diamonds} runout ended his day early.

Meanwhile, a short-stacked Scott Baumstein busted on a neighboring table.

David Williams
David Williams

The action was picked up with Lars Nickolai raising to 116,000 preflop from the big blind, and David Williams re-raising to 319,000 from under the gun.

Nickolai called and the flop came {7-Hearts}{6-Spades}{4-Clubs}. Nickolai checked and Williams shoved, sending Nickolai into the tank.

Nickolai thought it over for a few minutes before folding to preserve his last 500,000.

David Williams flashed the {2-Spades} and dragged another big pot.

Nanev Doubles Through Riordan

Level 20 : 10,000/15,000, 15,000 ante
Rumen Nanev
Rumen Nanev

Rumen Nanev limped in for 15,000 from early position and John Riordan raised it to 40,000 on his left. Nanev then reraised to 100,000 more and Riordan called.

The flop came {q-Spades}{q-Diamonds}{4-Hearts} and Nanev continued for 50,000. Riordan min-raised to 100,000 and Nanev called.

Both players checked the turn {10-Spades} and the {9-Diamonds} river peeled off. Nanev checked and Riordan shuffled some chips before shoving with enough to cover. Nanev snap-called and showed {q-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}{a-Diamonds}{k-Spades} for a full house, queens full of fours, and Riordan mucked.

Williams Shows The Bluff

Level 20 : 10,000/15,000, 15,000 ante
David Williams
David Williams

David Williams raised to 40,000 in early position and was called by Jared Koppel in the small blind and Matthew Newcombe in the big blind.

The board of {10-Diamonds}{j-Clubs}{9-Hearts}{a-Hearts}{9-Clubs} checked through to the river, where Newcombe bet out 90,000 when checked to. Williams decided to raised to 270,000 which folded out Koppel and Newcombe flashed {k-Clubs}{k-Spades} before tossing his hand into the muck.

Williams flipped over {2-Clubs}{3-Diamonds}{4-Spades}{5-Hearts} for no pair as he took down the pot he had bluffed into.

Stout Correctly Folds a Straight Flush

Level 20 : Blinds 10,000/15,000, 15,000 ante
Matt Stout
Matt Stout

Matt Stout made a sick fold and relayed the hand history to PokerNews.

The player under the gun made it 25,000 and was called by the player to his left, the hijack, the button, and Stout from the big blind.

The action checked all the way down to the {q-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}{a-Spades} river and Stout led for 100,000.

It folded back to the hijack who raised to 300,000. The button then moved all in for 800,000 effective. Stout folded {6-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}{7-Spades}{4-Spades} a straight flush to the nine and the hijack called.

The hijack turned over {a-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}{x-}{x-} an ace-high flush but the button held a {j-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}{7-Hearts} a straight flush to the jack.

Stout would bust shortly after but the next-level fold kept him from busting on the hand.

Michael Holtz: {a-Hearts}{k-Hearts}{q-Spades}{3-Spades}
John Riordan: {k-Clubs}{k-Spades}{a-Clubs}{7-Hearts}

Josh Stefansky
Josh Stefansky

There was about 200,000 on the {5-Diamonds}{q-Hearts}{2-Spades}{5-Clubs}{10-Clubs} river when John Riordan bet 100,000 and Joshua Stefansky quickly called.

Riordan showed {k-}{k-}{a-}{x-} for a pair of kings, but Stefansky had it beat with {5-Hearts}{9-Clubs}{6-Clubs}{4-Diamonds} for trip fives.

The Day 1 chip leader dragged the pot and remains near the top of the leaderboard with just 38 players remaining.

Saechao Sends Barat Out With Aces

Level 22 : 10,000/25,000, 25,000 ante
Kao Saechao
Kao Saechao

There was about 450,000 in the middle already on the {9-Hearts}{2-Diamonds}{10-Spades}{4-Spades} turn when Botond Barat bet 430,000.

Kao Saechao called and the river was the {3-Clubs}. Saechao led this time for 200,000 more, enough to cover Barat, and he called.

Barat had missed his straight and flush draws {q-Diamonds}{q-Spades}{j-Spades}{5-} but still held a pair of queens. Saechao had that beat thought with {a-Clubs}{a-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}, and his pair of aces to send him a huge pot.
