Larry Tull Leading After Day 1 in Event #57: $2,500 Omaha Hi-Lo 8 or Better/Seven Card Stud Hi-Lo 8 or Better Mix

Level 10 : 1,200/2,400, 0 ante
Larry Tull
Larry Tull

There were 405 players who came out to play today in Event #57: $2,500 Omaha Hi-Lo 8 or Better/Seven-Card Stud Hi-Lo 8 or Better. At the end of the night defending champions had fallen, streaks were broken, and Larry Tull was leading the way with just 126 players remaining. Tull is looking to make his fifth World Series of Poker cash and if things go well, possibly his first World Series of Poker final table as well.

Defending champion Hani Awad made an appearance today. He shared a table with Andrew Barber and the two exchanged several pots throughout the day. But despite winning last year, and coming in second the year before that, Awad didn’t make it past level seven today. Similarly, Julie Schneider had cashed in this even for the last four years running, with one final table in that mix as well. Today Schneider also fell before the end of level seven, breaking her streak as well.

Several big name players fell alongside Awad and Schneider, such as Daniel Negreanu, Jason Mercier, Scotty Nguyen, Greg Raymer, Mel Judah, Max Pescatori, and John Monnette.

But even with that massive list of pros who didn’t make it through the day, there were still plenty who did. Phil Hellmuth is still alive and kicking. He finished the night with 24,200 chips. Also still in the field and bracelet hunting is Alex Luneau. Luneau finished the night as one of the chip leaders, bagging up 94,000. Also coming back for Day 2 are Chris George (63,600), Jared Bleznick (71,000), David Bach (64,000), Esther Taylor (61,800), Mike Ross (53,800) and Mike Matusow (31,400), to name a few.

Players will return Friday at 2 p.m. PDT and will play 10 more levels. PokerNews will be here following all the action so make sure to tune back in.

Omaha Hi-Lo

"You would've got more bets in if you bet the turn," Chris George said to Josh Arieh before the hand started.

"I saved myself 2,000 by playing bad then," Arieh said.

After their brief encounter a player raised from under the gun. Arieh called on the button and George made it three bets from the big blind. The under the gun raiser and Arieh both called.

The flop was {6-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}{5-Spades} and George bet. The under the gun player and Arieh both called.

On the {K-Diamonds} turn George paused briefly.

"Oh come on," Arieh said. "Just steam it off."

"Well, ok," George said, then bet. The under the gun player called. Arieh thought about calling for a second.

"That would be a good card to raise," George said.

"Well, I'm getting 8-1," Arieh responded, then called.

On the {10-Hearts} George bet again. The under the gun player folded.

"Nice call, come on," George joked to Arieh. "Your six might be good."

Arieh finally decided to call. George showed {A-Spades}{A-Hearts}{8-Clubs}{5-Diamonds} and Arieh mucked.

"Well, it's only money," Arieh said.

This spurred an echo of 'No it's not!' from the table.

"Wait yeah that's right," Arieh said. "It says right on the chip, 'No cash value.'"

Last year's champ Hani Awad did not make it through Level 7 of the event, and his seat has been filled with another player.

Julie Schneider will also not be able to lock up her fifth cash in a row for this event, as she has also been eliminated from the tournament.

Along with them go the likes of poker commentator Norman Chad and two-time bracelet winner Mel Judah.

Calling Birds With Randy Ohel, Kyle Miaso, and Mike Ross

Stud Hi-Lo

Ohel: {x-}{x-} / {4-Hearts}{6-Clubs}{5-Hearts}{8-Clubs}
Miaso: {x-}{x-} / {2-Diamonds}{A-Diamonds}{K-Hearts}{9-Clubs}
Ross: {x-}{x-} / {6-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}{9-Spades} - fold

Randy Ohel let out a "Caw caw!" as the action checked to him on fifth street. He bet, then let out another, "Caw caw."

Ross folded, but Kyle Miaso called, taking the two players to sixth street. "Oh great, this one is gonna be on the site, too," Miaso said. "It's probably going to be titled 'Miaso Makes a Terrible Call.'"

Miaso checked to Ohel, and Ohel bet again. This time, Miaso folded, and Ohel took down the pot, letting out another, "Caw caw!" as he raked in the chips.

"We're doing bird calls when we scoop a pot," Ohel explained.

"Yeah, make sure you say that the big pigeon won the pot," Ross said.

The very next hand was scooped by Miaso, and he let out a, "Doki doki," as his bird call.

Can Julie Schneider Keep the Streak Alive?

Level 4 : 300/600, 0 ante
Julie Schneider
Julie Schneider

Julie Schneider has put together quite an impressive list of cashes in this very event.

She's cashed for four consecutive years and counting, coming in 40th last year for $4,573, 42nd in 2015 for $4,733, 29th in 2014 for $6,490, and 8th in 2013 for $19,952. Along with that, she has also had sucess in the $5,000 and $1,500 iterations of the Omaha Hi-Lo 8 or Better/Seven Card Stud Hi-Lo 8 or Better Mix events, as well.

Schneider has not had the best start to the day, as she is just below starting stack, but it's still early in the day, and that can easily turn around.

Time to Mix Things Up! Event #57 $2,500 Omaha Hi-Lo/Stud Hi-Lo Mixed Event Kicks Off at 3 p.m.

The 2017 World Series of Poker is deep into the thick of things now more than two-thirds of the way through. The 57th event of the summer gets underway this afternoon and will bring a mixed-game flavor to the Amazon. Event #57: $2,500 Mixed (Omaha Hi-Lo 8 or Better; Seven Card Stud Hi-Lo 8 or Better) will see cards go in the air at 3:00 p.m. local time inside the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino.

After finishing runner-up to Konstantin Maslak in this event in 2015, Hani Awad returned in 2016 and did the only thing he could to top it — he won. Awad bested a field of 394 including a final table with Per Hildebrand, Aditya Prasetyo and Fabrice Soulier, beating Soulier heads-up to claim his first WSOP gold bracelet and a prize of $213,186.

John Racener, James Obst, Mike Leah, Ryan Hughes and John Monnette are all within striking distance so we can expect to see most if not all of them take a seat here sometime throughout Day 1.

Play is scheduled for 10 hour-long levels on Day 1 with a 15-minute break every two levels. Late registration will remain open until the end of the break following the eighth level or approximately midnight.
