Matthew Wakeman Starts Day 2 as the Chip Leader

Welcome to Day 2 of the $5K Challenge Event here at the WSOP International Circuit stop in Sydney at The Star where the play is set to get underway at 2:15pm.

The brand new ‘big blind ante’ format was introduced to this event for the first time this year and yesterday’s Day 1 saw 215 entrants take part. Of that number, 16 players will return.

Matt Wakeman (981,000) has the chip lead and has a large gap from Robert Spano (505,000), Dejan Boskovic (424,000), Hannah Lee (382,000) and Sam Khoueis (370,000) who round out the top five.

Other notables to have survived to today include Gautam Dhingra (350,000), Shivan Abdine (206,000), Australian Poker Hall-of-Famer Billy Argyros (204,000) and Simon Chihane (97,000) who starts the day as the shortest stack.

Play will continue with 45-minute levels with 10-minute breaks coming after every three levels. Once the final table is reached levels will be an hour long. Blinds will resume at 5,000/10,000/ with a 10,000 big blind ante.

Check back in with PokerNews from 2:15pm today when all the action begins as the remaining 16 faces try to take down this exciting event.

Simon Chahine Eliminated in 16th Place ($13,062)

Level 15 : 5,000/10,000, 10,000 ante
Simon Chahine
Simon Chahine

Action folded around to the cutoff where Gautam Dhingra asked for a rough count of Simon Chahine's stack before raising to 21,000. Action folded to the big blind where Chahine thought for a bit, then moved all in for right around 80,000. Dhingra took a look at his cards then called.

Gautam Dhingra: {10-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}
Simon Chahine: {A-Clubs}{5-Clubs}

The flop came down {10-Clubs}{4-Clubs}{3-Spades} which gave both players a major piece with Dhingra making top pair and Chahine making a flush draw and straight draw.

On the {10-Spades} turn, Dhingra killed a ton of Chahine's outs, taking away his two pair outs as well as some flush cards.

The river was the {3-Clubs} which gave Chahine a bit of hope, as he made a flush, but upon second inspection, Dhingra actually made a full house, so with that, Chahine was eliminated. For his run in this event, Chahine will collect $13,062 for his 16th place finish.

Mladen Vukovic

Matt Wakeman opened with a raise to 20,000 in the cutoff and next to act, Mladen Vukovic moved all in from the button for roughly 150,000. Action folded back to Wakeman who quickly called.

Mladen Vukovic: {K-Diamonds}{Q-Hearts}
Matt Wakeman: {A-Spades}{J-Clubs}

Vukovic was left drawing dead on the turn as the board ran out {5-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}{A-Clubs}{9-Clubs} giving Wakeman two pair. With that, Vukovic hit the rail in 13th place. For his run in this event, he will collect $15,077.

David Wang
David Wang

Action folded to the cutoff where David Wang moved all in for 51,000. Action folded to the big blind where Billy Argyros tanked for a bit before calling.

David Wang: {Q-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}
Billy Argyros: {K-Diamonds}{2-Clubs}

The flop was devastating for Wang when it dropped {K-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}{4-Clubs} and he while he picked up a gutshot straight draw, he failed to hit as the board completed with the {9-Hearts} and the {5-Hearts}. With that, Wang hit the rail in 11th place and he'll collect $19,118 for his efforts.

Isaac Lau: {a-Hearts}{j-Clubs}
Hauman Darbani: {a-Diamonds}{k-Diamonds}

Action folds around to the blinds where Billy Argyros moved all in for just a bit more than the big blind. Sam Khoueis was in the big blind and he called after looking at his cards.

Sam Khoueis: {6-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}
Billy Argyros: {7-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}

It was domination nation for Khoueis and he was able to hold on as the board ran out {J-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}{5-Spades}{A-Clubs}{10-Spades}, keeping his sixes in the lead the whole way. With that, Argyros hit the rail in 8th place and collected $29,754 for his run.

Level 18 : 10,000/20,000, 20,000 ante
Sam Khoueis
Sam Khoueis

Isaac Lau opened on the cutoff to 50,000 and next to act on the button, Dejan Boskovic called. In the small blind, Sam Khoueis moved all in for 177,000 and action was back on Lau. Lau moved all in over the top for about 600,000 putting the action back on Boskovic. Boskovic didn't waste too much time before folding, leaving Khoueis and Lau heads up.

Sam Khoueis: {Q-Hearts}{Q-Diamonds}
Isaac Lau: {K-Diamonds}{J-Clubs}

The flop was a disaster for Khoueis when it came down {K-Clubs}{8-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}, giving Lau the better pair. Khoueis couldn't catch up on the {3-Clubs} turn or the {7-Hearts} river, so with that, he was eliminated, taking home $37,859 for seventh place. Lau took down the pot and moved over 800,000 after the pot.

Isaac Lau: {A-Hearts}{J-Diamonds}
Dejan Boskovic: {A-Spades}{Q-Spades}

The board ran out {9-Hearts}{7-Spades}{3-Hearts}{Q-Hearts}{7-Diamonds} which did bring a bit of a sweat on the turn, as Lau picked up a flush draw, but it was for naught as Boskovic held on, making two pair on the river to send Lau to the rail in 6th place. For his run, Lau will take down $48,889 for his run.
