Shawn Buchanan

Shawn Buchanan is currently lying in fifth place with 1,460,000 chips. Buchanan, who has had a fantastic WSOPE in Cannes, is recognised by his peers as being one of the very best. All he needs now is a 1st place to add to his resume. Will this be Buchanan time?

Amir Lehavot raised to 35,000 in the hijack seat and Buchanan cold-called in the cut-off. The flop was {Q-Diamonds} {Q-Hearts} {J-Clubs} and Lehavot check-called a 39,000 Buchanan bet. The turn was the {4-Spades} and both players checked before we had the {K-Spades} on the river. Lehavot checked and a 200,000 Buchanan bet took down the pot.

Mattern Finds Action, Doubles

Under the gun, Arnaud Mattern looked down at {A-Clubs} {J-Diamonds}, and he open-shoved for his last 209,000. The table folded around to the blinds, but in the big, Thibaud Guenegou was stuck with a tough decision. He had just about 300,000 chips left, so the call was for about two-thirds of what he had left. He'd take a few long minutes to make up his mind, trying to chat up Mattern in French at several different points. Finally, he said, "Bad call," as he slid the chips across the line to put Mattern at risk. He was right; Guenegou could only show up {A-Hearts} {10-Spades}, and Mattern was poised for a double.

The board ran out {K-Diamonds} {J-Clubs} {K-Spades} {8-Spades} {9-Clubs}, and at least one Frenchman is moving up. Mattern is up to 438,000 thanks to that, while Guenegou has been crippled.

Drumming Up a Double

Over on the featured table, we heard Michael Drummond shove all in for 253,000, and big stack Dermot Blain tanked and made the call with a chance at the knockout. He was ahead, but Drummond was drawing live for the double.

Showdown
Drummond: {K-Hearts} {10-Hearts}
Blain: {A-Spades} {9-Clubs}

When the dealer turned the flop up, the {9-Clubs} was visible in the door, but it came as part of a Drummond-pleasing {J-Diamonds} {K-Diamonds} {9-Spades} flop. The turn {Q-Clubs} improved him to the straight, and he only needed to dodge the three remaining tens to stay alive. The river was the {7-Clubs}, though, and Blain is forced to part with a chunk of his stack. It's tough to count over there, but he should still be over 1 million -- likely closer to 1.1 million.

Roberts Rivers Kranich

Brian Roberts raised to 31,000 on the button and Moritz Kranich three-bet to 86,000 from the big blind. The flop was a lowly looking {5-Spades} {4-Spades} {4-Hearts} and Kranich bet 77,000. Action onto Roberts and he raised to 162,000 and Kranich called. The turn was the {3-Hearts} and both players slowly tapped the felt. The river was the {8-Hearts} and once again both players checked. On showdown Roberts won the hand with the eight on the river.

Silver Calls The Clock On Antonius

Level 21 : 8,000/16,000, 2,000 ante

Patrik Antonius raised under the gun making it 32,000 to play and Max Silver called on the button. The flop was {7-Hearts} {4-Hearts} {4-Clubs} and Antonius bet 45,000 and Silver called. The turn was the {A-Diamonds} and Antonius check-called a 50,000 Silver bet. On the river we saw the {2-Diamonds} and once again Antonius checked. Silver bet 128,000 and after a soak in the tank Silver called the clock on the chiselled one. Antonius eventually made the call and Silver showed down {A-Clubs} {J-Spades} to win the pot.

Silver Beating Up on Sammartino

The title says enough, and we just watched two pots that prove it.

In the first, Dario Sammartino limped in from the small blind, and Max Silver checked for a free flop. It came {3-Hearts} {5-Hearts} {3-Diamonds}, and Silver called a bet of 17,000. Sammartino checked to him on the {A-Spades} turn, then called 30,000 to see the {K-Spades} river. Silver bet 111,000, and Sammartino paid him off.

The Brit showed up {7-Hearts} {3-Spades}, and his big blind special took the first chunk out of Sammartino's stack. The second would come just a few hands later.

We picked up the {10-Spades} {K-Spades} {5-Clubs} flop as Sammartino was betting 40,000 from his position under the gun. Patrik Antonius would check-fold, but Silver flatted to see the turn card. It was the {7-Clubs}, and Sammartino slowly tapped the table. Silver too his cue to make a bet of 88,000, but Sammartino wanted to play for more. He check-raised to 239,000 with two towering stacks of chips, and Silver didn't waste too much time making the call. On the {3-Spades} river, both players were content to check it down.

Silver waited until Sammartino showed his airball {Q-Hearts} {J-Hearts}, then showed his {K-Diamonds} {J-Clubs} to take the pot. He's really turning the screws now, working his stack to the front at the expense of the former chip leader.

John Duthie Eliminated in 18th Place (€37,000)

John Duthie eliminated in 18th place
John Duthie eliminated in 18th place

John Duthie has had a pretty barren 2011, with the exception of his 11th place finish at the WSOP HU Championship during Vegas this Summer, so this deep run has been a breath of fresh air for the man known as "Mr Big."

Amir Lehavot raised to 35,000 from the hijack seat and Duthie moved his last 147,000 across the line, stood up and put a fag in his mouth. Elio Fox was in the big blind and he made the call before the dealers eyes stared at Lehavot who obviously had a decision. Lehavot decided to isolate and his 1 million raise was sufficient. Fox moved out of the way and Duthie was heads-up versus Lehavot.

Showdown

Lehavot{A-Spades} {Q-Spades}
Duthie{Q-Clubs} {9-Clubs}

So Duthie was in a little bit of pain but it didn't last long - he was dead on the flop!

Flop: {5-Spades} {3-Spades} {2-Spades}

"At least I could have had a sweat," he says to Barny Boatman on the rail.

The turn and river are irrelevant and Duthies leaves us with 17 players and after one more elimination we will have a slight pay increase to €43,000.

Sammartino Still Sliding

Patrik Antonius opened the pot from the button, and Dario Sammartino called to go heads up to the flop. It came {J-Clubs} {7-Hearts} {K-Hearts}, and both players checked to the {2-Diamonds} river. Sammartino led out with a bet now, and Antonius flatted. The {3-Hearts} filled out the board, and Sammartino stuck out another 120,000. Antonius spent some time deliberating, then slid 380,000 chips into the pot. The Italian would tank and fold, and he's dropping back into the pack now with just over a million chips.
