California's Edvin Setaghian Wins Nearly $60k in Wynn Summer Classic Event

On June 6, the $1,100 buy-in no-limit hold'em tournament during the Wynn Summer Classic attracted 242 entrants, creating a prize pool of $237,160, easily surpassing the $200,000 guarantee.

Players from all around the world, not just here in Nevada, showed up to compete. In the end, it was California resident Edvin Setaghian as the only player still with chips. The champion received $59,930 for his impressive and dominant performance at the luxurious Wynn Resort in Las Vegas.

Prior to that championship run, Setaghian had just $69,000 in career live tournament scores, according to Hendon Mob, so he nearly doubled his prior cashes.

Setaghian defeated Jose Catela from Portugal heads up to win the title. The runner-up didn't leave empty-handed, however, and took home $36,997 for his deep run. The final table of nine featured players from three separate countries (United States, Portugal and Hungary). Valdemar Kwaysser (5th place for $12,403) and Marton Czoszor (7th place for $7,684) are both Hungarians.

Platt's Struggles Continue

Level 12 : 1,500/2,500, 2,500 ante
Jun Obara
Jun Obara

Jeff Platt enjoyed a red-hot start to the day, emerging as one of the early chipleaders. As the day wore on, however, he struggled to maintain that initial momentum and as a result has fallen back into the pack.

Jun Obara opened to 4,000 from under the gun and Platt responded by three-betting to 12,500 from middle position. Action folded back around to Obara, who flatted to send the two players heads-up to the flop.

Obara checked on a flop of {6-Diamonds}{6-Spades}{5-Clubs} and Platt continued for 7,000. After counting out raising chips, depositing them next to his main stack and taking one final look at the board, Obara pushed 16,500 into the middle. The raise was enough to force Platt to fold, sending him slipping further down the chip counts.

Moreno Doubles Through Mackelprang

Level 12 : 1,500/2,500, 2,500 ante
Andrew Moreno
Andrew Moreno

According to a player at the table, Dragana Mackelprang opened to 6,000 in the cutoff, Andrew Moreno three-bet to 22,000 in the big blind, and Mackelprang called.

The {10-Hearts}{7-Hearts}{7-Spades} flop was checked to the {q-Spades} turn. Moreno bet 34,000, Mackelprang moved all in, and Moreno called for his remaining 63,000 or so.

Andrew Moreno: {k-Spades}{j-Spades}
Dragana Mackelprang: {5-Spades}{5-Diamonds}

The {a-Spades} hit the river to improve Moreno to a flush and he collected the pot.

Mackelprang doubled on the next hand, but still holds a below-average stack.

Zarco's Ascent Continues

Level 12 : 1,500/2,500, 2,500 ante

Javier Zarco opened to 6,000 from middle position and faced an all in for 38,000 from a player in late position. Zarco did not appear entirely happy about it but did make the call with the bigger stack.

Late Position Player: {a-Hearts}{q-Clubs}
Javier Zarco: {k-Hearts}{q-Hearts}

Though not at risk, Zarco was dominated and would need significant help to come from behind to eliminate his opponent. No help came on the {8-Clubs}{7-Clubs}{10-Diamonds} flop but the {k-Diamonds} turn brought the miracle card he sought. Needing to fade jacks and aces, he did just that after the {9-Diamonds} landed on the river to send his opponent home in cruel fashion. Zarco, meanwhile, has emerged as one of the big stacks in the room.

Loosli Gets It In Good

Level 13 : 2,000/3,000, 3,000 ante

Sylvain Loosli was all in and at risk from the small blind against an under-the-gun player.

Sylvain Loosli: {a-Diamonds}{k-Diamonds}
Under the Gun Player: {a-Spades}{j-}

Loosli had his opponent dominated and was in good shape to secure the double. He did just that after the board ran out {2-Clubs}{4-Spades}{5-Hearts}{7-Hearts}{5-Spades}. Though still below tournament average, Loosli has at least bought himself some breathing room.

Platt's Struggle Ends With Zero Chips

Level 13 : 2,000/3,000, 3,000 ante
Jeff Platt
Jeff Platt

Esteemed broadcaster Jeff Platt has had an up-and-down day in his quest to accumulate chips, and his struggle to find a bag today has recently ended.

As recounted by Platt, the button player jammed with a dead small blind, and Platt called all-in for his stack of about 33,000 in the big blind.

Jeff Platt: {k-}{10-}
Button: {q-}{7-}

The {4-}{2-}{2-} flop kept Platt in front, but the {7-} turn left him needing help, and the {2-} completed the board to confirm his elimination.

"Many people were saying that's the greatest call they've ever seen," Platt mentioned as he made his exit from the tournament area.

Although his struggle to add to his stack ends before the day's conclusion, the broadcaster and self-proclaimed "very average poker player" will surely have many more opportunities and struggles in the future.

Severino Puts Beat On Opponent to Score Knockout

Level 13 : 2,000/3,000, 3,000 ante
Jose Severino
Jose Severino

On a board reading {9-Clubs}{3-Spades}{5-Spades} Jose Severino was involved in a three-way pot with Daniel Moran in the small blind and another player in middle position. Severino moved all in and was called by the middle position player, who had the effective stack, while Moran folded.

Middle Position Player: {k-Diamonds}{k-Clubs}
Jose Severino: {a-Clubs}{9-Hearts}

The at-risk player was well ahead and remained so after the {8-Hearts} turn. However, the improbable {9-Spades} found its way onto the felt on the river, dealing a death blow to the middle position player's stack late on Day 1a.
