Day 1a Completed

Daniel Swartz Goes Large for Day 1a Chip Lead

Level 14 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
Chip Leader Daniel Swartz
Chip Leader Daniel Swartz

Day 1a of the Hollywood Poker Open Columbus is in the books. The first of two starting flights attracted 152 entries, which swelled the prize pool well past the $100,000 guarantee even before the end of level one. With a whole other starting flight to go, it's safe to say the last stop of Season 3 – aside from the HPO Championship in Vegas next month – is already a tremendous success.

After 14 levels of play, Daniel Swartz bagged the lead with a massive 350,000 in chips. His closest competitor at the end of Day 1a was Ken Moore, who bagged up 266,500. Also still in the hunt are Gary Tsui (248,500), Brandon Wetzel (214,000) and Nick Guagenti (119,000). In all, 26 players advanced to Monday’s Day 2.

Swartz managed to get some of his chips from the most famous face in the field, 2003 World Series of Poker champ and HPO Ambassador Chris Moneymaker. In Level 12 (800/1,600/200) with a board reading {9-Diamonds}{7-Spades}{5-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}, Swartz bet 12,500 and Moneymaker raised to 29,000. Swartz thought for a moment before placing out a three-bet to 50,000, and Moneymaker eventually folded.

A couple of hands later, Swartz and Moneymaker were at it again. With a board reading {8-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}{k-Clubs}, Swartz check-called a bet of 20,000 and then led out for 25,000 after {9-Hearts} fell on the river. After some contemplation, Moneymaker announced a call and Swartz, who had previously busted Steven Williams, rolled over the {6-Diamonds}{6-Hearts} for a rivered straight. Moneymaker incredulously mucked his hand.

As for Tsui, he got a boost in one of the last hands of the night when a player open-shoved for 40,200 under the gun. Action folded to Tsui on the button, and he thought a bit before making the call with the {7-Hearts}{7-Spades}, which had his opponent's pocket sixes crushed. The board ran out {3-Hearts}{7-Clubs}{5-Hearts}{2-Clubs}{a-Clubs}, and Tsui went on to finish third in chips.

A few notables that entered, but failed to advance were Moneymaker, Shawn Cunix, Doug Holland and Andrew Jeffrey. While all of them will have another chance on Sunday if they so choose, should they choose, Moneymaker, who busted Day 1a after he "shipped right into aces," has already confirmed that he won't be firing a second bullet.

Chris MoneymakerGood luck to those playing today in flight 1b @hwpokeropen #colhpo. Been a long road trip for me. Going home to see family for two days

Tsui Busts One

Level 14 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante

A player open-shoved from under the gun for 40,200 and Gary Tsui thought for a moment and eventually called from the button. Tsui tabled {7-Hearts}{7-Spades}, bad news for his opponent and his pocket sixes.

The board ran out {3-Hearts}{7-Clubs}{5-Hearts}{2-Clubs}{a-Clubs} and Tsui sent his opponent to the rail.

Moneymaker Shaken Out

Level 13 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante

We didn't catch the hand, but Chris Moneymaker told us on the way out that he "shipped right into aces". It is unclear whether Moneymaker will try again for Day 1b.

West Doubles Through Guagenti

Level 13 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante

Jeremy West raised to 5,500 from under the gun and Nick Guagenti three-bet to 9,500 from right behind. The flop came {k-Hearts}{3-Clubs}{q-Hearts} and West moved all in for 16,100. Guagenti quickly called and tabled {a-Hearts}{k-Spades}, but was behind the {k-Clubs}{q-Diamonds} of West. Neither the {10-Diamonds} turn or {9-Hearts} river brought any help for Guagenti and West stayed alive.

Swartz Tussles Twice with Moneymaker

Level 12 : 800/1,600, 200 ante

We picked up the action on a board of {9-Diamonds}{7-Spades}{5-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds} and Daniel Swartz bet 12,500. Chris Moneymaker raised to 29,000 and Swartz thought for a moment before placing out a three-bet to 50,000. Moneymaker eventually folded.

A couple of hands later, Swartz and Moneymaker were heads up again, with a board reading {8-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}{k-Clubs}. Swartz check-called a bet of 20,000 and the {9-Hearts} fell on the river. Swartz led for 25,000 and Moneymaker announced "call", after some contemplation. Swartz rolled over {6-Diamonds}{6-Hearts} for the rivered straight and Moneymaker incredulously mucked his hand.

Swartz is on an absolute tear in the late stages of this level, where he also busted Steven Williams in the midst of his heater.
