Sunday Briefing: Paul Vas Nunes Wins Second PokerStars Sunday Million

Paul Vas Nunes

Most players can only dream of winning the PokerStars Sunday Million during their careers, but Paul “pvas2” Vas Nunes isn’t like most players.

The Surrey-based grinder has more than $2.3 million in online poker tournament winnings, an impressive sum help by the fact he won the Sunday Million in 2010 and on Nov. 27 took down his second Sunday Million event.

Vas Nunes was one of 5,657 entries (1,023 re-entries) in the week’s biggest online poker tournament and he helped create a $1,131,400 prize pool. This pot of cash was distributed among the top 998 finishers, a min-cash weighing in at $343 and $152,804 being reserved for the champion.

The tournament ended in a heads-up chop with Vas Nunes and “buschle” striking a deal. The final two players agreed to a deal based on ICM, although Vas Nunes said “I want a little extra on top of ICM to make my ego feel better. Buschle agreed to give his opponent an additional $111 and the pair played on for the $20,000 set aside for the eventual winner.

That winner turned out to be Vas Nunes who on the final hand min-raised with KQ and buschle called with A9. On the KA5 flop, Buschle check-raised a Vas Nunes bet to 3.3 million and was called. On the 4 turn, buschle check-called a 4.5 million bet and then check-called a 15 million all-in bet on the Q river, leaving Vas Nunes as the last man standing and he became part of an exclusive club of two-time Sunday Million champions.
