Tom Goldstein is a prominent American lawyer and high-stakes poker player who was indicted in January 2025 on federal tax fraud charges.
As a private attorney, Goldstein argued before the US Supreme Court in dozens of cases before retiring from law in 2023. He represented Vice President Al Gore in the landmark 2000 election case against President George W. Bush. He also co-founded the popular SCOTUSblog.
In January 2025, Goldstein was indicted by a federal grand jury in Maryland for alleged tax evasion related to millions in poker winnings and using legal fees owed to his law firm to pay personal poker debts.
Goldstein's trial began in January 2026 and featured testimony from high-profile celebrities and poker players, including Tobey Maguire, Rick Salomon and Andrew Robl, who testified that he coached Goldstein for 2016 heads-up matches that produced $50 million in profit.
PokerNews traveled to Maryland to cover Week 4 of the trial, which included testimony from Goldstein's ex-accountant and revelations about Goldstein's "secret poker ledger."
Goldstein claims to have made $88 million in heads-up poker matches, though he says most of that went to his financial backers. He also says he is down several million overall in poker due to losses in ring games.
Goldstein played anonymously on the 2024 Huster Casino Live Million Dollar Game and infamously mucked the winning hand in a $540,000 pot.
