888Live Barcelona €220 Opening Event Draws 720 Entries

Level 14 : 2,500/5,000, 500 ante
Gabriel Pazos de la Torre and Lauri Saaskilahti dominated the action on Day 1c
Gabriel Pazos de la Torre and Lauri Saaskilahti dominated the action on Day 1c

The 2017 888Live Poker Festival Barcelona saw the final two starting days of the €200+20 Opening Event kick off at the Casino Barcelona and the card room was once again buzzing and bursting with action left and right. Day 1c attracted a total of 244 entries, while the fourth and final flight, a 15-minute level turbo heat, saw another 80 entries take to the felt and 21 players advanced with Marti Bonfill (269,500) at the top of the counts.

The last two starting days brought the total number of entries up to 720, creating a prize pool of €138,240, and 143 hopefuls will return to the tables as of 1 p.m. local time on Sunday to play down to a winner. The exact prize pool information will be released when the cards go back in the air, and it will be a long night before the champion gets to lift the trophy and take home a significant payday.

Day 1c was filled with plenty of action right from the start, and early in level three a 400 big blind pot emerged, in which Lauri Saaskilahti doubled to four times the starting stack after having flopped bottom two pair with nine-four suited. Sebastian Tusal had ace-king for top pair and top kicker, and both the turn and river bricked. Saaskilahti spent a big portion of the day at the top of the leader board, but several big clashes with Gabriel Pazos de la Torre saw the Finn drop back into the middle of the pack and put 146,000 in his bag.

It was no surprise to see Pazos de la Torre at the top of the counts, and the Spaniard also claimed the overall lead for Day 2 with massive 470,000. Other big stacks of the third flight include Andre Filipe Quelhas (341,000), Fernando Campomar Concha (337,500), David Rodriguez Lamas (302,500), Alberto Flores Trujillo (269,000), Yannick Pernot (265,500) and Maria Lozano Valero (255,500). Pernot scored a big knockout with ace-queen versus ace-king after spiking a queen in the last level of the night and Lozano Valero did so after holding up with kings against eights.

Other notables among the 1c survivors were Juan Font Espina (132,000), Marco Della Tommasina (79,500) and 888poker.es Freeroll qualifier Miguel Angel Rodriguez de la Rubia (61,500). Among those that failed to bag up chips were Sandro Hauser, "The Thunder" third-place finisher Roberto Perez, Juan Bastido Perez, Sally Stephens, Antonina Anapolska, Younesse Oualgasi and Robert Cazali.

Oualgasi was very active early on and his roller coaster ride ended in level nine after a three-way showdown with ace-eight versus pocket sevens and pocket kings. Until the end, the pace of eliminations stayed very high and late casualties included Atanas Petkov and Stian Bruheim, before just 48 participants bagged up chips for the night at the end of level 14.

Another Side Event also kicked off today and met it's guarantee. The €100+10 "The Breeze" Side Event saw a total of 210 entries, and at the time of writing, more than 50 players were still remaining with the top 24 spots all guaranteed at least €195. The first place comes with a payout of €4,870 and an 888Live winner trophy, however, the tournament may not necessarily crown a champion tonight. At 12 p.m. local time, "The Thunder" with the same level and blind structure saw 10 players return and Munir Iqbal Sanchez came out atop of a four-way ICM deal to become the first Side Event winner of the 12-day festival.

Full chip counts and the seat draw for Day 2 of the €200+20 Opening Event will be provided as soon as PokerNews receives them, and the live reporting team will be back at lunch time tomorrow when the action resumes in level 15 at blinds of 3,000-6,000 and a running ante of 500. The level duration increases to 40 minutes each and the tournament is scheduled to play down to a winner.

Pazos de la Torre and Saaskilahti Bash Heads Twice

Level 14 : 2,500/5,000, 500 ante
Gabriel Pazos de la Torre vs Max Rotko
Gabriel Pazos de la Torre vs Max Rotko

In the last two hands of the night, the chips went flying between Lauri Saaskilahti and Gabriel Pazos de la Torre. First the former shoved the {9-Clubs}{3-Hearts}{J-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}{6-Clubs} river for 137,500 in a battle cutoff versus button and Andre Filipe Quelhas demanded from the Finn to show the bluff after Pazos de la Torre had folded. Saaskilahti did so by flashing {10-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}.

In the final hand, Pazos de la Torre called a raise and Saaskilahti said "I will call because you did so." The three-way flop fell {A-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}{7-Diamonds} and the initial raiser checked, while Pazos de la Torre bet 20,000. Both opponents called and the {K-Spades} fell on the turn. Now it checked to Saaskilahti, and the Finn bet 60,000. The third player in the hand folded and Pazos de la Torre check-raised all in.

Several minutes passed and the clock was called on Saaskilahti, who ended up folding after one minute ran down without a decision. Pazos de la Torre showed {A-Hearts}{9-Diamonds} and bagged the chip lead.

Saaskilahti No Longer in the Lead

Lauri Saaskilahti

A massive pot had taken place over on table 16 and as a result, Gabriel Pazos de la Torre became the new chip leader. He three-bet and then five-bet shoved for around 140,000 with ace-deuce. Lauri Saaskilathi had four-bet to 45,000 and called with queen-nine, and the ace held up to let Pazos de la Torre double big time.

Antonio Oscar Vallespi Fernandez is another big stack and happens to sit right next to Pazos de la Torre.

Della Tommassina Quadruples with Ace-High

Level 10 : 1,000/2,000, 200 ante
Marco Della Tommasina
Marco Della Tommasina

Marco Della Tommasina moved all in for his last 10,600 and Alberto Flores Trujillo called in the hijack. The cutoff also called and thje big blind called all in for 2,700 less. Once the two pot sizes were determined, the flop fell {8-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}{3-Diamonds} and Flores Trujillo checked. The cutoff moved all in and forced a fold to allow for the following three-way showdown:

Marco Della Tommassina: {A-Hearts}{10-Spades}
Big Blind: {K-Clubs}{4-Spades}
Cutoff: {Q-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds}

Neither the {3-Spades} turn nor the {9-Clubs} river changed anything and the Italian quadrupled with just ace-high.

Younesse Oualgasi raised to 5,000 from early position and Marc Oller Martinez called out of the small blind. The big blind moved all in and Oualgasi shoved over the top to pick up a snap-call by Oller Martinez.

Marc Oller Martinez: {K-Clubs}{K-Hearts}
Big Blind: {7-Spades}{7-Clubs}
Younesse Oualgasi: {A-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}

The 888 Special for Rodriguez de la Rubia

Level 4 : 200/400, 75 ante
Miguel Angel Rodriguez de la Rubia
Miguel Angel Rodriguez de la Rubia

With 13,000 in the middle and the flop showing {10-Spades}{9-Clubs}{6-Spades}, Miguel Angel Rodriguez de la Rubia faced a bet worth 7,000 and moved all in for his last 15,350. His opponent snap-called with {A-Clubs}{A-Spades} and the Spaniard only had {8-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}. The {3-Diamonds} turn provided no help yet, but the {8-Clubs} river gave Rodriguez de la Rubia a set.

"So that's why you have the logo?" a player on the table joked, referring to the 888poker patch of the Spaniard.

Massive Double for Saaskilahti

Level 3 : 150/300, 50 ante
Lauri Saaskilahti
Lauri Saaskilahti

Sebastian Tusal raised to 650 and picked up two callers in Juan Font Espina and Lauri Saaskilahti. On the {K-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}{4-Spades} flop, Tusal continued for 2,100 and Font Espina called before Saaskilahti raised to 7,400. Tusal moved all in and Font Espina folded, Saaskihalti called for around 60,000 and tabled {9-Clubs}{4-Clubs}.

Tusal had {A-Diamonds}{K-Spades} and the {10-Hearts} turn and {6-Spades} river were both blanks. "I had even more before that but lost an all in," Saaskilahti added while racking up the chips. The 400 big blind pot sure is a nice consolation for the previous loss. Fellow Finn Jaako Wilska sits right next to him in the three seat.

Four-Way Deal in The Thunder

Munir Iqbal Sanchez Wins the Thunder in 4-Way Deal

The €80+8 The Thunder Side Event got underway at 8 p.m. local time and the initial guarantee of €10,000 was crushed thanks to 235 entries, including 36 re-entries, which created a prize pool of €18,800. The tournament was scheduled to play down to a winner the same night, but once the final table was reached at 5 a.m. local time, all remaining hopefuls bagged and tagged their chips.

Ten players returned to the tables of Casino Barcelona at 12 p.m. local time and it took just over an hour to get down to the last four. Since the stacks were very similar, the four looked at ICM numbers and quickly agreed to a deal. Munir Iqbal Sanchez, who started the additional day in the lead, also had the most chips when the deal was and was awarded the first trophy of the 2017 888Live Poker Festival.
