Cate Hall in Charge on Day 2 of 888Live Barcelona Main Event

Cate Hall in dominant mood on Day 2. The Arizona powerhouse ended the day with the chip lead

After a gruelling 10 hour-long levels on Day 2, just 25 players remain in the inaugural 888Live Barcelona Main Event. The chip leader at the end of play was the American professional Cate Hall with 2,467,000, but she was followed closely by Marco Regonaschi in a sprint for the chip lead throughout the day and the Italian bagged up an impressive 2,130,000.

Day 2 got underway with those who would end in charge very active from the start. Regonaschi busted two players when he spiked a six on the river to eliminate Ange Besnainou who held the dominating hand of Ace-Nine against Ace-Six when the chips went in. There were other unlucky players who busted early, with late entry Ramon Miquel Munoz and Dominique Terzian both departing before the first level up. Kimmy Kurko, Simen Gulbrandsen and Gregory Torrents all followed those players out of the door, but others were more successful.

Kelly Kellner brought a particular brand of optimism and sparkle to the tournament and would finish in the money with ease after an odd misclick from Lucia Martinez led to him getting all of his chips into the middle with pocket aces against her pocket fives and surviving. He was one of the first to crack a quarter-million, but would end the day with the roundest number of all.

Two players who had a whole lot of history in the WSOP Main Event of 2016 avoided each other but could not steer clear of drama. Stacy Matuson once again rode a rollercoaster of premium hands, all-in confrontations and suck-outs as she rocketed her into the money but would be denied a final day spot when she flopped top two-pair against a low set that held when the chips were committed.

William Kassouf, Matuson’s conqueror in Nevada, entered play with enough chips to battle and that he did, as a series of confrontations saw him reach for the chip lead before dropping dramatically before the bubble. Kassouf would ride out that particular period of Day 2, after bouncing back from each successive setback with a lower pair by holding the bigger pair in his next all-in, holding each time. A play with pocket threes on the river of a board containing the rest of a wheel straight gave Kassouf a massive hand and control over his fellow feature table players just when he needed it most. Kassouf bagged up 902,000, well clear of the 730,800 average at close of play.

The bubble boy took just one hand to arrive, when David Murillo Parda, who hadn’t played a hand in an hour went all-in with King-Queen and was called by Jose Manuel Planells Castillo’s pocket sevens. Those held to send Parda to the rail, and he was followed by a flurry of players while a handful profited.

With just a few levels to go, it the American Cate Hall who went into overdrive, and perhaps taking advantage of the post-bubble euphoria put players to the test time and time again. Hall got several key calls correct to give her the kind of stack she could attack with and there was no holding her back. In three hands, she took apart Jaime Puig’s tournament hopes, before moving into a lead she would not relinquish.

The last levels saw Cate Hall maintain her lead even when Marco Recognaschi moved to her table, and it is Hall who will be the player to beat on the final day. Should she win, then Hall's live tournament results would go over the million-dollar mark...but only a win will do for that inevitable landmark to be reached tomorrow evening.

We’ll be back in action from 2.00pm tomorrow as we play down to a winner at Casino Barcelona and find out who will win €110,000 and the title of 888Live Main Event champion!

Vazquez Gomez Flushed Away

Level 21 : 8,000/16,000, 2,000 ante
Alejandro Vazquez Gomez
Alejandro Vazquez Gomez

Over on the feature table, Alejandro Vazquez Gomez was all in with {K-Hearts}{K-Clubs} on a flop of {7-Spades}{4-Spades}{2-Diamonds} and Besmir Hodaj looked him up with the {K-Spades}{2-Spades}. The {3-Spades} turn instantly left Vazquez Gomez drawing dead, and that rendered the {Q-Hearts} river to a minor formality.

Cate Hall Takes Chip Lead

Level 20 : 6,000/12,000, 1,000 ante
Cate Hall as the final levels of a tumultuous Day 2 at the felt approach.
Cate Hall as the final levels of a tumultuous Day 2 at the felt approach.

Cate Hall has the chip lead with 41 players remaining in the 888Live Barcelona Main Event. Having been busy writing up her last hand, we asked Cate to let us know what happened when she was free from the action.

"I limped in the small blind with {10-Clubs}{5-Clubs}. The flop came {A-Clubs}{8-Clubs}{4-Clubs} and we both checked. On the turn, which was an off-suit four, I made it 28,000 and the big blind called. On the river, I bet 156,000 and he called, he only showed a four, but I took it down."

That flopped flush gives Cate Hall the lead and given that she's one of only two players to have cracked a million chips so far today, there is a big chance that Hall will be here on the final day.

Marco Regonaschi
Marco Regonaschi

Cristian Ciuperca raised and then called the three-bet by table chip leader Marco Regonaschi to see a flop of {9-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}{6-Clubs}. Regonaschi continued for 67,000 and Ciuperca called before the remaining chips of the Romanian went in after the {2-Spades} turn.

Marco Regonaschi: {Q-Spades}{Q-Diamonds}
Cristian Ciuperca: {8-Spades}{8-Hearts}

The {7-Hearts} river was a blank and Ciuperca headed to the rail.

Castillo Claims Dogra Dogra Scalp on Moody River

Level 18 : 4,000/8,000, 1,000 ante
Harcharan Dogra Dogra is OUT after a sensational hand in which his red hot hopes were coolered.
Harcharan Dogra Dogra is OUT after a sensational hand in which his red hot hopes were coolered.

Harcharan Dogra Dogra got his last chips into the middle in great shape, all-in pre-flop for 200,000 with {K-Spades}{K-Hearts} against Jose Manuel Planells Castillo's {Q-Clubs}{Q-Hearts}.

Even the suits were covered.

The flop of {10-Spades}{J-Diamonds}{K-Diamonds} ket Dogra Dogra ahead, even making him a set. The {2-Diamonds} on the turn was the plainest of bricks upon which to build his new chip mountain. But the {9-Clubs} river gave Castillo an unlikely straight and sent Dogra Dogra out of the 888Live Barcelona Main Event, a bee-line made for the cash desk before Castillo could even begin stacking up his chip leading pile.

Nothing is ever easy in poker....unless right now your name is Jose Manuel Planells Castillo.

Martinez busts to Garcia Martin

Lucia Martinez
Lucia Martinez

In a five-way limped pot the flop showed {8-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}{7-Hearts} and Francisco Jose Garcia Martin bet 12,000, which only Lucia Martinez called. On the {4-Spades} turn, Garcia Martin made it 21,000 to go and Martinez called before the {6-Spades} river saw an overbet worth 140,000 by Martinez for the remainder of her stack.

Garcia Martin eventually called and showed {10-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}, Martinez only had {7-Spades}{5-Spades} for the inferior straight.

Escote No More

Sergi Escote
Sergi Escote

Stefan Eriksson and David Xarau Navarro have taken over the top spots at their table while former big stack Sergi Escote was just eliminated. Escote peaked at 330,000 not long ago, but now he was all in for a mere 10 big blinds and was called by Xarau Navarro.

David Xarau Navarro: {A-Spades}{10-Diamonds}
Sergi Escote: {K-Clubs}{Q-Clubs}

The board came {A-Clubs}{J-Hearts}{9-Hearts}{K-Diamonds}{J-Clubs} and that was it for Escote.

Dogra Dogra Donates to Soler

Level 15 : 2,000/4,000, 500 ante
Harcharan Dogra Dogra is used to winning in Barcelona...but can he reach a final table exactly seven months after winning his best live score?
Harcharan Dogra Dogra is used to winning in Barcelona...but can he reach a final table exactly seven months after winning his best live score?

Harcharan opened from the cut-off pre-flop to 11,000 and only Daniel Soler called from the small blind.

The flop of {9-Spades}{4-Diamonds}{9-Hearts} saw Soler check and Dogra Dogra c-bet for 12,500. But when Soler check-raised to 26,000, Dogra Dogra took a long thoughtful moment. He eventually folded and Soler caught up a little, although Dogra Dogra is still dominating his table, both in terms of chips and VPIP. Measure aggression in a heavy number of pots has proved a consistent uptick for the man who final tabled the final EPT Barcelona Main Event for €230,950 just seven months ago tomorrow.

Panchev Busts to Regonaschi

Level 14 : 1,600/3,200, 400 ante
Marco Regonaschi
Marco Regonaschi

Hristian Panchev raised to 7,000 and picked up one caller before Marco Regonaschi three-bet to 29,000 out of the blinds. He picked up both callers and then bet the {Q-Spades}{9-Clubs}{7-Spades} flop for 43,000. Panchev moved all in and the third player in the hand folded, while Regonaschi quickly called.

Marco Regonaschi: {K-Hearts}{K-Spades}
Hristian Panchev: {Q-Hearts}{J-Hearts}

The {10-Spades} turn was a sweat for the Bulgarian, but the {10-Hearts} river bricked and Regonaschi stood up to tell the good news in Italian to some friends on another table. With that, Regonaschi jumped into the lead.

Big Double for Kellner

Level 14 : 1,600/3,200, 400 ante
Kelly Kellner
Kelly Kellner

Jose Antonio Gascon Garcia raised from under the gun and Lucia Martinez called in the cutoff. Gregory Torrents shoved his short stack from the button and Kelly Kellner then reshoved from the big blind for more than the average. Gascon Garcia folded and Martinez quickly called, thinking Kellner had a far smaller stack.

Kelly Kellner: {A-Spades}{A-Hearts}
Lucia Martinez: {5-Clubs}{5-Hearts}
Gregory Torrents: {7-Spades}{6-Spades}

The board ran out {A-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}{2-Spades}{Q-Hearts} and Torrents was eliminated, while Kellner doubled for 129,500 through Martinez. The start-of-the-day chip leader has about as much left as she started with after running hot early on.
