Ferran Corominas Leads Last 17; Martin Jacobson in Contention

Ferran Corominas Leads Last 17 After Day 2

The penultimate day of the 2019 888poker LIVE Barcelona €1,100 Main Event has concluded and 17 players out of a 551-entry strong field remain to battle for the top prize of €110,000. Among the finalists at Casino Barcelona is also 888poker ambassador and 2014 WSOP Main Event champion Martin Jacobson, however, the overnight spotlight belongs to Ferran Corominas.

While the name may not ring a bell at the international poker tables yet, Corominas is known as a professional football player and the 36-year-old currently plays as a forward for Indian club FC Goa. Corominas also has several cashes on home soil and in Las Vegas to his name, and may very well have to travel to Sin City again in a few weeks time if he were to take down the flagship event of the festival in Barcelona.

A late surge in which Corominas knocked out four players in the final two levels of the night put the Spaniard in prime position for the added $12,600 package for the eventual champion, courtesy of WSOP sponsor 888poker. Corominas bagged up 2,170,000 and fellow countryman Samuel Hernandez follows in second place with 1,540,000, Italy's Gabriele Rossi sits in third place with 1,395,000.

The trio at the top of the leader board will not only face Jacobson (1,285,000), but also former WSOP Main Event finalist Fernando Pons (1,020,000), Zhong Chen (810,000), Tom-Aksel Bedell (600,000) and Stefano Schiano (580,000).

888poker ambassador Sofia Lovgren cashed the second 888poker LIVE Main Event in a row and was eliminated by Jacobson in the final hands of the night to bow out in 18th place. Other notables that cashed but failed to make it to the final day were Kully Sidhu, Luca Marchetti, Salvatore Camarda, Pablo Rojas, Julian Menhardt, Dorde Jovanovic, and Casey Kastle.

The late registration remained open until the cards went back in the air, and another nine players opted to enter with a fresh stack of 30,000 to boost the field to 551 entries and ensure that the top 56 spots would get paid. Among them were the 888poker ambassadors Ana Marquez and Vivian Saliba, but both bowed out very quickly.

Chris Moorman also failed to make it to the dinner break and the field was quickly cut down in half. Race car driver Daniel Juncadella, Maya Geller, 2017 Barcelona champion Luigi Shehadeh, Vicente Delgado, Sonny Franco, Sergi Escote, Pedro Cairat, Pedro Cairat and Jesus Cortes were just some of the notables that had to leave empty-handed.

In one of the most-spectacular hands of the day, Gereon Sowa saw his hopes of a cash vanish when his aces were cracked by the ace-jack of Patrick Sanfilippo. Day 1c Dario Salamone was also involved in the action with a pair of jacks and flopped top set, only for Sanfilippo to hit running diamonds for a miracle flush. Neither Salamone nor Sanfilippo made it to the payouts, though.

Daiva Byrne, 2017 WSOP Europe Main Event champion Marti Roca de Torres and defending champion Adrian Costin Constantin also ran out of chips before the money bubble and Erik Ostergaard saw his pocket aces cracked by the ace-king of Tom-Aksel Bedell two off the money. Ankit Mehta became the bubble boy when his king-jack lost a race against the pocket deuces of Fernando Pons and that opened the floodgates for dozens of casualties after the dinner break.

In the biggest pot of the tournament until then, Xavier Riera was at risk with pocket aces against the pocket queens of Martin Jacobson over on the feature table and the river provided one of the two remaining queens in the deck to oust Riera and vault Jacobson towards the top of the leaderboard.

Ferran Corominas went from a below-average stack to chip leader in the final stages of the night. First he doubled with the nut straight, then knocked out Pablo Rojas, Sergey Rodin, Kully Sidhu and Rayco Ramos. Sidhu four-bet jammed with ace-king right into the pocket aces of the Spaniard, who then flopped a gutshot and flush draw with nine-eight suited against Rayco. Another nine on the turn improved Corominas to trips and Ramos failed to get there with top pair and an open-ended straight draw.

The all in showdowns kept on coming even during the final three hands of the night and Salvatore Ritrovato as well as Sofia Lovgren missed out on making Day 3 by a few minutes. Ritrovato check-jammed with a pair of sixes into the set of deuces of Cornelis de Jong and Lovgren failed to hit a flush with ace-five suited against Jacobson's ace-king to become the final casualty of the night.

Day 3 is scheduled to commence at 3 p.m. local time with blinds of 10,000/25,000 and a 25,000 big blind ante. There will be a redraw at 16 and 9 players remaining and the action will be streamed on the 888poker Facebook page and YouTube channel with hole cards displayed on a 30-minute security delay. The PokerNews team will provide all the action until a champion is crowned.

Sofia Lovgren Eliminated in 18th Place (€4,700)

Sofia Lovgren
Sofia Lovgren

Fernando Pons raised it up to 40,000 in the cutoff and Sofia Lovgren moved all in for her last 263,000 on the button. Fellow 888poker ambassador Martin Jacobson then reraised all in to isolate and Pons sent his cards into the muck.

Sofia Lovgren: {a-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}
Martin Jacobson: {a-Clubs}{k-Diamonds}

The {q-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}{10-Spades} flop gave Lovgren a flush draw, while Jacobson turned the nut straight with the {j-Hearts}. A king to chop or a diamond to double were still possible, however, the {8-Clubs} on the river was a blank. Lovgren cashed the second 888poker LIVE Main Event in a row and fell short of making the final day by just a few minutes.

Salvatore Ritrovato Eliminated in 19th Place (€4,700)

Level 22 : 10,000/20,000, 20,000 ante
Salvatore Ritrovato
Salvatore Ritrovato

Right after the last three hands were announced, Kristian Larsson raised to 43,000 and picked up two callers out of the blinds in Salvatore Ritrovato and Cornelis de Jong. The {8-Clubs}{4-Spades}{2-Hearts} flop was checked to Larsson and he bet 31,000, which then prompted the check-shove of Ritrovato. De Jong called and Larssoon got out of the way.

Salvatore Ritrovato: {6-Clubs}{6-Spades}
Cornelis de Jong: {2-Diamonds}{2-Spades}

The {k-Diamonds} turn and {q-Spades} river were both blanks and Ritrovato was eliminated in 19th place for €4,700.

Rayco Ramos Eliminated in 20th Place (€4,700)

Rayco Ramos
Rayco Ramos

Joining the action on the {q-Spades}{j-Spades}{9-Hearts} flop, Ferran Corominas checked out of the big blind and so did Salvatore Ritrovato in the under-the-gun position. Rayco Ramos on the button made it 100,000 to go and Corominas called, Ritrovato folded.

On the {9-Diamonds} turn, Corominas checked and snap-called the shove of Ramos.

Rayco Ramos: {q-Hearts}{10-Hearts}
Ferran Corominas: {9-Spades}{8-Spades}

With his gutshot and flush draw on the flop, Corominas had instead improved to trips on the turn and Ramos needed a king and a king only to stay in the tournament. The {3-Hearts} river was not what he was looking for and Ramos bowed out in 20th place for €4,700.

Luca Rosa Eliminated in 21st Place (€4,000)

Luca Rosa
Luca Rosa

Another short stack saw his grind come to an end, as Luca Rosa ended up all in and at risk against David Hu for his last 277,000.

Rosa turned oveer the {k-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds} and Hu had that dominated with {a-Diamonds}{q-Hearts}. Neither player hit anything on the {j-Hearts}{8-Spades}{7-Hearts}{5-Clubs}{6-Clubs} board and ace-high was good enough for Hu. Rosa has to settle for a payday of €4,000 and all remaining 20 players have now locked up at least €4,700.

Kully Sidhu
Kully Sidhu

The action started with a raise by Kully Sidhu and ferran Corominas three-bet the button to 140,000. Sidhu piled his 550,000 in and Corominas almost beat him into the pot.

Kully Sidhu: {a-Hearts}{k-Hearts}
Ferran Corominas: {a-Spades}{a-Diamonds}

The {k-Spades}{5-Diamonds}{3-Spades} flop gave Sidhu some outs, but the {2-Spades} turn and {3-Diamonds} river failed to improve the Brit and he joined the rail in 22nd place for €4,000.

Kristian Larsson had moved all in three times in quick succession and got them all through including a three-bet jam against Kully Sidhu. Larsson then raised the button and Luca Marchetti defended the big blind.

They got the stacks in after the {6-Spades}{5-Diamonds}{4-Spades} flop and Marchetti was the player at risk.

Luca Marchetti: {k-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}
Kristian Larsson: {k-Spades}{q-Spades}

The {6-Diamonds} turn also gave Marchetti a flush draw, but the kicker played on the blank {9-Hearts} river to reduce the field once more. Marchetti takes home €4,000 for his efforts.

One year ago, Benjamin Barkay finished in 16th place in this very event and had to grind a short stack for the past few hours. Eventually he jammed for under four big blinds and was called by Fernando Pons in the big blind-

Rodin and Camarda Eliminated

Salvatore Camarda

In the last minutes of the level, another two players were eliminated. First, Sergey Rodin jammed with {6-Spades}{6-Hearts} into the {10-Clubs}{10-Diamonds} of Ferran Corominas and the board came {a-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}{5-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}{5-Clubs}.

Corominas had previously knocked out Pablo Rojas and jumped above one million.

One table over, Salvatore Camarda jammed for around 300,000 into Tom-Aksel Bedell and the latter quickly called.

"I need a miracle," Camarda said in Italian and tabled the {a-Clubs}{5-Clubs}. Bedell was way ahead with {k-Spades}{k-Hearts} and faded the ace and straight draw of the Italian on a {q-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}{4-Spades}{3-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds} board.
