Ken Demlakian finished runner-up in the 2012 ANZPT Queenstown Main Event and since then has failed to cash in another ANZPT Main Event. He will be trying to change that here in Sydney and so far has started strongly on Day 1a.
We recently watched Demlakian scoop a pot on a board against one opponent.
After Demlakian's opponent had checked on the river, Demlakian led for 2,400 and the player took some time before making the call. At showdown, Demlakian tabled his with the pair of nines enough to win the pot.

When we wandered past Octavian Voegele's table we noticed he had a stack of 80,000. That's a monster stack for this stage of the tournament, so we had to find out what happened.
Apparently Voegele held on a flop. His unlucky opponent, Tommy Vo, held . Not too surprisingly, there were fireworks on this flop with lots of chips hitting the middle as Voegele would eliminate Vo with his quad nines trumping the full house.
The interesting part of this story is that Vo and Voegele play the same home game on the Gold Coast and are even room mates while staying here in Sydney! It was a long way for Vo to come to have a home game buddy cooler him.

My colleague over at the PokerStarsBlog, Heath Chick, has written a little feature piece on one of the interesting characters playing in tonight's Day 1a field - Ashton Cartwright. The Aussie has written a poker book that is having quite a bit of success on the online marketplace and Chick caught up with him to chat about the success.
