Day 1b Started

Second and Final Day 1 of ANZPT Sydney Set to Begin

We are back in The Star for the second and final Day 1 flight of the ANZPT Sydney Main Event.

Yesterday there were 211 players who ponied up the $2,200 buy-in and hit the felt and today we hope for a field far larger than that, on which will see us surpass last year's 460-player field and even move towards making this the largest ANZPT in history.

Jazz Mathers set the pace on Day 1a, bagging up 198,400 in chips. That's the stack the players will be chasing on Day 1b, but more importantly, players will just be hoping to make it through eight levels of play to secure a Day 2 berth.

Once again we will be here all day long providing live updates, while are friends at PokerStarsBlog are providing feature stories.

The action kicks off at 12:30 p.m. !

Cards in Air on Day 1b

Level 1 : 50/100, 0 ante

The players have scrambled into their seats and the cards are now in the air!

Right now the tournament clock tells us that there have been 208 entrants on Day 1b.

Registration is open for the first two hours of play!

Plan Again

Level 1 : 50/100, 0 ante

As was the case on Day 1a, the plan on Day 1b is to play eight 60-minute levels.

The players of course start with 20,000 in chips, blinds kick off at 50/100 and the game of the day is to survive and thrive.

Plenty of notables in the field, so let's go see exactly who is at the felt.

Names at the Tables

Level 1 : 50/100, 0 ante

The tournament clock has now ticked to 220 entries so far on Day 1b of the ANZPT Sydney Main Event.

As is usually the case, plenty of those players are notable names including Sydney local Michel Bouskila, 2012 WSOP Main Event third-place Jake Balsiger, recent ANZPT Perth champion Patrick Mahoney and runner-up Dean Blatt, Full Tilt ANZPT Ambassador Liam O’Rourke, Matt “mjw006” Wakeman, Brendon Rubie, Dale Marsland, Jesse McKenzie, Oliver Gill, Australian Poker Hall of Fame member Gary Benson and one of Australia's few WSOP bracelet winners and perhaps most unknown, Christina Pie, just to name a few!

We will be keeping an eye on these players on Day 1b, along with a few others, and of course any players who manage to build a stack or elicit our interest!

First Gill Story of the Day

Level 1 : 50/100, 0 ante

It’s not surprising that Oliver Gill has already rushed over to the media desk to tell us a story.

Gill told us he was “one card away from doubling" his stack.

Apparently Gill had {a-}{a-} against a player who had {q-}{q-} and all was going well for Gill to take all the player’s chips on a board full of low cards, but when a king hit the felt, Gill’s opponent stopped in his tracks.

Nevertheless, Gill tells us he managed to take half the player’s stack.

Chips for Marsland

Level 1 : 50/100, 0 ante

Dale Marsland has had a huge amount of success on the ANZPT, but has yet to take one down.

We recently watched Marlsand in a hand that begin with the Western Australian opening with a raise from middle position and just the big blind came along for the ride. The {7-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}{a-Hearts} flop would see Marsland’s opponent check call a bet of 250 and a {4-Clubs} hit the felt. This time the player check-called a bet of 550 and a {k-Hearts} completed the board on the river. Once again it was checked to Marsland and this time Marsland bet 2,050. This sent the player into the tank. Eventually the cards hit the muck and the handy little pot went to Marsland.

Right Fold From Teng

Level 1 : 50/100, 0 ante

Victor Teng has more than US$500,000 in results on his tournament resume and will be looking to add to that here at ANZPT Sydney. Teng’s most recent success was a third-place finish in the Macau Poker Cup Red Dragon which featured 995 players this past January.

Teng recently played a hand against two opponent and we picked up the action on the turn of a {4-Hearts}{10-Clubs}{2-Diamonds}{3-Clubs} board. It was checked to Teng, who bet 1,625. The first player to act then raised it up to 4,025 and the other player folded. On Teng and he went into the tank. Teng had a look at his opponent’s stack, saw he had 10,100 behind and tanked some more. Eventually Teng gave it up and luckily so, as his opponent tabled {a-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds} for a wheel.
