Chiu Runs Into Flush

David Chiu
David Chiu
David Chiu check-called bets on all streets including a 5,000 chip bet on the river on a board of {8-Spades}{3-Spades}{5-Spades}{3-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}. His opponent flipped over {A-Spades}{9-Spades} for the flopped flush and despite the double-paired board Chiu couldn't better that hand as the four-time WSOP bracelet winner slips back to 12,000.

Nguyen Gets Best Of Sick Flop

Xuan Nguyen
Xuan Nguyen
Xuan Nguyen raised preflop and the lone caller came from the small blind as they took a heads up flop of {A-Clubs}{Q-Spades}{6-Clubs}.

The small blind led out with a bet of 1,825 before Nguyen popped it up to 5,500. The small blind quickly moved all in and Nguyen made the call.

The player in the small blind held {Q-Clubs}{10-Clubs} for middle pair and flush draw as Nguyen tabled {A-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds} for two pair.

The turn was the {3-Diamonds} and river the {A-Hearts} to give Nguyen a full house. "Sick flop!" commented Emad Tahtouh and Nguyen finds a handy double up to move up to around 35,000 chips.

ElkY Raises Langvan Off a Pot

We walked up to Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier's table as he was involved in a hand against Julien Langvan. Langvan is a PokerStars-sponsored player who has arms that reach just below his shoulders due to a birth defect. With the board reading {4-Hearts} {8-Diamonds} {7-Spades} {Q-Hearts} and about 8,500 in the pot, both players checked. On the river {5-Diamonds}, Langvan made a blocking bet of 2,500. Grospellier calmly surveyed the situation, then cut 7,775 chips off his stack and threw them into the middle. That raise caused Langvan to fold after about fifteen seconds of thought.

Hachem Doubles Through Powell

Hachem Happy To Double Up
Hachem Happy To Double Up
An early position player raised to 500 with Julian Powell, Joe Hachem and David Chiu all making the call.

They took a flop of {2-Diamonds}{3-Spades}{7-Hearts} and it was checked to Powell in the cutoff who fired out 2,200. Hachem popped it up to 4,500 and the other two players stepped aside before Powell made the call.

The turn was the {7-Spades} and Powell checked to Hachem who fired 6,000. Powell thought for a long time before eventually raising to 12,000 which was enough to put Hachem all in. Hachem called and tabled {Q-Hearts}{Q-Spades} as Powell cringed and revealed {9-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}.

The river landed the {8-Clubs} and Hachem doubles up to 33,750 leaving Powell with only 5,425.

Mercier Can't Get Going

Isabelle Mercier
Isabelle Mercier
Isabelle Mercier, a late arrival to today's tournament, hasn't made much progress with her stack yet. She bet 1,300 on a board of {8-Spades} {J-Spades} {3-Clubs} and was raised by her lone opponent to 2,600. She made the call. Both players checked the {A-Diamonds} on the turn. When the river came {q-Hearts}, Mercier fired again for 2,600. Her opponent raised her to 8,600, inducing a quick fold.

Mercier has about 18,000 in chips.

The Razor Gets Cut

"The Razor"
"The Razor"
John "the Razor" Phan has had an impressive 2008, but past results are no guarantee of future performance. Phan got all in preflop against Javed Abrahams with {A-Clubs}{K-?}. Abrahams had {K-Hearts} {K-Spades} and survived the confrontation when the board came {7-Hearts} {J-Hearts} {J-Hearts} {8-Hearts} {9-Spades}. That pot pushed him over the starting stack to 22,000 and dropped Phan to 11,000

Steicke Happy With The Free Card

David Steicke
David Steicke
In a hand just prior to the break, David Steicke raised it up to 600 preflop, before David Saab made it 2,000 to go. Steicke made the call and they saw a flop of {7-Clubs}{10-Spades}{2-Spades}.

Both players checked and they went to the turn of {Q-Diamonds}. Steicke led out for 2,050 and Saab made the call. The river was the {3-Spades} and Steicke fired again, this time for 3,000. Saab made the call.

Steicke showed {A-Spades}{Q-Hearts} for top pair, top kicker which was good to take the pot.

"I guess I shouldn't have given you the free card then!" exclaimed Saab as he falls to 21,000. Steicke is now up to 31,200.
