High Rollers Event

Day 1 Completed

That's A Wrap!

Today saw 61 of Macau's finest, high-rolling poker players enter the fray of the Grand Waldo Hotel and Casino for the eagerly anticipated 2008 APPT High Rollers event.

Falling just short of the guarantee, the prize pool of HK$10 million was up for grabs and it didn't take long for the action to heat up as Celina Lin found out when her aces were cracked by Yevgeniy Timoshenko in the first level. The eliminations were steady throughout the day, with less than half of the original starts making it through to see day two action.

Survivors include Joe Hachem, Van Marcus, Mike McDonald, Julian Powell, Barry Greenstein and Terrence Chan. They will all be chasing the unstoppable David Steicke who amassed a huge chip lead and carried it through until the final cards were dealt.

The players will return at 2 p.m. tomorrow as they play down to a final table of nine players. We look forward to your company then!

Time to Gamble

The short stacks are taking their chances here at the end of the day. J.C. Tran moved all in preflop and was called by several players. Michael McDonald turned over the winner on a {j-Spades} {9-Diamonds} {A-Spades} {K-Clubs} {7-Spades} board when he showed {J-Hearts} {10-Hearts}. That knocked Tran out of the tournament.

Tyler Cornell also got it in the middle against McDonald, but he survived when his {A-Clubs} {J-Clubs} held up agaist McDonald's {K-Diamonds} {Q-Hearts} by flopping an ace and never looking back.

Another Programming Note

This tournament was scheduled to have a redraw at three tables, when twenty-four players remained. However, because we are so close to three tables already, TD Danny McDonagh made the decision that the Day 2 redraw will take the place of the three-table redraw so that we will have only one redraw tomorrow prior to the final table.

Buchanan Eliminated

Game over for Shawn Buchanan.
Game over for Shawn Buchanan.
With time winding down on the day, Shawn Buchanan decided it was time to double up or go home. He got his chips in the middle with ace-queen against Andrew Scott's pocket sevens and couldn't connect with the board. He has been eliminated.

Four More Hands

The tournament clock has been paused with twelve minutes to go. Dealers have been instructed to deal four more hands. After those hands are completed, we will be done for the day.

Marcus Can't Doge Bullets

The flop came down {6-Diamonds} {8-Clubs} {J-Spades} in a hand contested between Danny Wong and Van Marcus. Wong checked it over to Marcus, who made it 3,300 to go. Wong quickly called.

Both players checked the {6-Spades} turn. When the river fell a harmless-looking {2-Clubs}, Wong came out firing for 8,000. Marcus decided to look him up and called, but it wasn't a good choice. Wong showed {A-Diamonds} {A-Hearts} and took down the pot.

"You Don't Run Like God, God Runs Like You!"

David Steicke

On a board of {Q-Spades}{8-Hearts}{7-Clubs}{10-Hearts}{5-Clubs} and already with a huge pot in the middle, David Steicke fired out a bet of 17,500 to send Danny Wong into the tank for a long time.

The other players at the table stood and went for a walk, Andrew Robl even did some push-ups, while Wong contemplated his decision. He eventually gave it up and Steicke collected another pot.

Eric Assadourian said to Steicke, "You are my new idol! You know something about this game that we don't!"

While Van Marcus joined in "What do you know? Did you do a deal with the devil? You don't run like God, God runs like you!"

The gospel according to David is continuing, with Steicke now up to over 160,000 chips.
