Demetriou Fighting to Stay Alive

Harry Demetriou recently opened a pot from the cutoff for 6,000 -- all of his chips.

"I know my luck's going to run out at some point," Demetriou said after Wooka Kim passed on the button. Both blinds also folded, with the big blind flashing {7-Spades} {2-Spades} as he did so.

"I need double-ups, boys!" Demetriou pleaded. "Not just the blinds."

Demetriou collected the blinds and antes pushed to him by the dealer, then pointed to another player at the table. "If he can do it, I can do it. I just need help from the rest of you."

Caution Rules the Day

Play has definitely slowed down now that we've reached Level 7. It may be that players are traditionally on a dinner break after six hours of play, or it may be that the remaining players have realized that they are forty minutes away from making Day 2.

Farkye On Fire!

Kofi Farkye
Kofi Farkye
The players at Kofi Farkye's table are starting to get a little annoyed as he sits behind a massive stack of chips and continues to remain aggressive. In a recent pot, Farkye raised from under the gun to 1,550 and one particular player gave Farkye some friendly verbal warfare including, "You're eating steak tonight, when I've only got enough here for rice!" before reluctantly folding. The small blind was the only player to make the call.

The flop came down {K-Clubs}{J-Hearts}{9-Hearts} and the small blind checked to Farkye, who fired 2,175 and took it down. He flashed {Q-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds} for the nut straight as the same player quipped, "You can add nuts to that too!"

A few moments later, Farkye was at it again, check-raising all in over the top of his opponent's 2,400 bet on a flop of {J-Hearts}{2-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}. His opponent called with {Q-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds} for a flush draw as Farkye remarkably held the best hand with {K-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}. The turn was the {A-Diamonds}, completing the flush, but a fourth heart fell on the river, the {5-Diamonds}, giving Farkye a bigger flush to eliminate another opponent!

Farkye now sits behind 85,000 with a clear chip lead over the field as we approach the end of the day's play.

Daisy Blooms

Daisy Wain has been busy accumulating chips.
Daisy Wain has been busy accumulating chips.
Daisy Wain continues to play well, although her results hav been a bit mixed. First she got all in against two opponents on the turn of a {6-Spades} {3-Clubs} {J-Hearts} {8-Hearts} board, having both covered. Her two pair made with {J-Diamonds} {8-Diamonds} was the best hand and stayed that way after the river came {Q-Clubs}. That pot propelled her chip stack to 63,000.

Shortly thereafter, a short stack at her table raised all in to 7,000. She called with {A-Spades} {Q-Hearts} and was in a dominating position to eliminate her opponent, who showed {Q-Clubs} {J-Clubs}. Things looked relatively safe for Wain when the flop fell {K-Hearts} {8-Clubs} {8-Hearts}, but Wain's opponent made a running straight with the {9-Clubs} turn and the {10-Clubs} river. It wasn't the biggest hit -- she still retains 56,000 chips.

The Big Names of Poker Collide!

In a battle of the big names of poker, Veerachai Vongxaiburana and Xu Xinzheng went to the river on a board of {Q-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}{K-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}. Vongxaiburana fired out 10,000 and Xinzheng tanked before making the call.

Vongxaiburana instanly mucked, knowing he was beat as Xinzheng showed {K-Spades}{J-Diamonds} for the flush.

Vongxaiburana slips to 17,000 with Xinzheng now up to 54,000.

Double-Double (Extra Onions, Hold the Sauce)

Harry Demetriou's pleas for his table to cooperate by doubling him up have finally been answered. He has doubled twice in short order, both times with ace-queen. First, he was all in preflop with {A-Hearts} {Q-Spades} against an opponent's {8-Clubs} {8-Hearts} and flopped a queen. That hand increased his stack to 13,500. A bit later, Demetriou called a raise to 2,000 holding {A-Diamonds} {Q-Hearts} against a single opponent. The action checked all the way to the river, with the board showing {8-Hearts} {J-Hearts} {7-Clubs} {K-Spades} {10-Diamonds}. Demetriou's opponent then moved all in. With the nuts, it was an easy call for Demetriou.

He now has 27,000.

5... 4... 3...

With fifteen minutes left in the day, the tournament staff have instructed the dealers to deal exactly five more hands at each table. This is a counter-measure intended to thwart players from trying to slowplay their way to Day 2. At the completion of five hands at each table, we will be done for the day.

Time To Double

Mike "Timex" McDonald
Mike "Timex" McDonald
Some players see the last five hands of the day as a chance to sit back and make sure they book their seat into Day 2. For others, like Mike "Timex" McDonald, it's an opportunity to "gamble or bust"!

After McDonald's opening raise was re-raised, he decided to push his last chips into the middle with {A-Hearts}{J-Diamonds} and found himself up against an opponent's {Q-Spades}{Q-Hearts}.

The board fell {5-Spades}{8-Diamonds}{K-Hearts}{A-Spades}{4-?}, giving McDonald a pair of aces and the double up to 27,000, ensuring that he will see Day 2 action.

Wain Ends with a Set

Daisy Wain has run well and played well today. She ended her day by raising to 3,000 from under the gun and was called by Paul Siu. On a flop of {8-Spades} {5-Clubs} {6-Diamonds}, Wain came out firing for 6,500. Siu wanted no part of the hand any longer and quickly folded. Wain showed {8-Clubs} {8-Hearts} for a set of eights as she collected the pot.
