Goonawardana Works Some Magic

Marlon Goonawardana
Marlon Goonawardana
After a series of preflop raises Marlon Goonawardana decided to shove all in for an additional 22,000 and Tom Rafferty made a huge call. It was the right one, as Rafferty's {J-Clubs}{J-Hearts} were in great shape against Goonawardana's ambitious {K-Clubs}{10-Hearts}.

That was, however, until the board fell {K-Spades}{Q-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}{Q-Hearts}{K-Hearts} giving Goonawardana a full house to double up to over 55,000, as Rafferty was left shaking his head as he slipped back to 75,000.

Another Dent for Griffin

One patten we've noticed from Gavin Griffin today is that he seems comfortable playing out of position, but will slow down on the river if he fires two bullets and gets called on both of them. That's what happened in a recent hand, where Griffin made flop and turn bets of 1,300 and 2,400. On the river, with the board showing {4-Spades} {6-Spades} {j-Diamonds} {3-Clubs} {J-Clubs}, Griffin check-called a bet of 4,000. Upon being shown the red tens for two pair, jacks and tens, Griffin mucked.

He's down to 68,000 in chips.

Players Battening Down the Hatches

With the tournament now inside the last hour of play for the day, players have clearly tightened up, looking to maintain their chip stacks so that they can come back for Day 2. It's been a quiet day generally, but things have definitely gotten noticeably quieter in the last twenty minutes.

Assadourian's Day Gets Longer

Eric Assadourian has made some good laydowns today, avoiding running into the big hands of his opponents and saving himself some chips in the process. He raised one limping opponent from 600 to 2,100 on the button preflop. His opponent called to a flop of {K-Diamonds} {J-Hearts} {4-Hearts}, then checked and called a bet of 3,100. Both players checked the {9-Hearts} turn. When the river fell {4-Spades}, Assadourian's opponent bet 6,000. Assadourian mucked his hand, and was rewarded when his opponent showed {Q-Spades} {10-Spades} for the turned straight.

Assadourian still has a workable stack of 33,600.

Meldrum Cracks Rockets

With the board reading {J-Spades}{4-Hearts}{K-Clubs}{2-Clubs}, Andrew Meldrum was in the tank contemplating the 7,000 chip bet from his opponent into an already hefty pot.

Meldrum asked how much his opponent had behind, and learned it was 8,000 before deciding to just flat call.

The river was the {Q-Hearts}, and Meldrum fired out enough to put his opponent all in. He sighed and made the call.

"Two pair," shrugged Meldrum, tabling {Q-Clubs}{J-Clubs}.

"I knew the river was bad for me," said his opponent as he revealed {A-Diamonds}{A-Clubs}, before standing from his seat and exiting the tournament floor. Meldrum is now up over 70,000 in chips and looking good for a Day 2 standing.
