Sitting Duck

Ask Gordon Huntly, and he himself will tell you that he ran pretty hot at the ANZPT Sydney. We recall him cracking aces a couple of times that ultimately led to him winning the title.

It seems that poker karma has caught up with the Scotsman after a devastating and rapid exit from the APPT Cebu Main Event.

The action started with a raise to 425 from Andrew Nguyen, which collected three callers to see a flop of {2-Hearts}{q-Spades}{8-Diamonds}. Nguyen continuation bet for 1,325 before Huntly raised to 2,800 to force folds from the other two players. However Nguyen didn’t slow down, re-raising to 5,200. Huntly announced himself all in for around 14,000 and Nguyen made the call.

Nguyen showed {q-Clubs}{8-Clubs} for top two but Huntly was in the lead with {2-Clubs}{2-Diamonds} for a set of ducks. That all changed when the {Q-Diamonds} appeared on the turn, giving both players a full house but it was Nguyen’s queens full of eights which crushed Huntly’s ducks.

The river was the {4-Clubs} to see Huntly become the first casualty of the day.

Team Pro Taking Chips

Team PokerStars Pro Bryan Huang has chipped up in the early goings after winning a recent pot. Following a limp, Huang raised it up to 700. His opponent called before leading for 1,000 on the {8-Hearts}{4-Spades}{6-Spades} flop.

It didn’t deter Huang as he raised it to 2,700. His opponent deliberated before calling as the {6-Clubs} didn’t appear to change much on the turn. Action checked to Huang who bet 3,700 which was enough pressure to force his opponent to fold.

A Great Result

Level 2 : 100/200, 0 ante

Late registration has around 20 minutes left, but it is looking likely that the number of players today will be 116. That eclipses the 51 and 76 players from the Day 1a and Day 1b respectively.

It also means that this year's APPT Cebu event with 243 players has managed to see more entrants than last year's 236. A great result for poker in Asia and for PokerStarswww.pokerstars.net.

Terrence Takes Down Aces

Terrence Chan has just managed to take down what is likely to be one of the biggest pots of the whole day and we were there to catch all the action.

It started when play folded around to Chan in the hijack. He raised it up to 450. The small blind made the call and then the player in the big blind three-bet to 1,200. Chan made the call and so did the small blind as the three players would take to the flop.

Flop: {k-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}{9-Spades}

The small blind player checked on the flop and the big blind then bet 1,100. Chan made the call, while the small blind got out of the way.

Turn: {8-Hearts}

This is when it all started to heat up. The big player would this time check and Chan bet 1,700. Back on Chan's opponent and he would insta-raise it up with an extra 2,000. Chan made it 5,200 and his opponent immediately shoved all in. It was only a few thousand more to Chan and he would make the call.

Chan tabled {k-Clubs}{q-Diamonds} for flopped trips, while his opponent turned over {a-Spades}{a-Hearts} for nothing but a pair of pocket rockets. The river landed and changed nothing as Chan took down the very nice pot and sent one player out the door.

Hong Shows Bluff

Ryan Hong has recently arrived from Manila where he finished 4th in the APT Philippines Main Event. He'll be looking for similar success here at the APPT Cebu Main Event as we have managed to catch some fancy poker from him a short while ago.

When we arrived at the table, Hong had an extra 2,075 in front of him preflop against one opponent in front of him. We aren't sure exactl how many bets had been put in, but eventually Hong's opponent would make the call and the dealer would spread three cards along the felt.

Flop: {3-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}

Hong's opponent checked and then Hong flicked out one 5,000-denomination chip and said, "forty-four". His opponent immediately folded and Hong then tabled his {j-Spades}{10-Hearts}.

Huge Hit to Ewing

Dave Ewing has just taken a huge hit to his stack. When we came to the table it was Ewing against one opponent with a flop showing {7-Hearts}{4-Spades}{5-Spades} and this is when all the fireworks started happening.

We didn't see how it went in, but Ewing was busy making a call against his opponent who had moved all in.

Ewing: {10-Hearts}{10-Clubs}
Opponent: {9-Spades}{6-Spades}

It was an over pair for Ewing and a big straight and flush draw for his opponent. The {8-Clubs} on the turn was not a good card for Ewing and when the {a-Diamonds} on the river changed nothing, it was a big dent to Ewing's stack.

All In Early

Level 2 : 100/200, 0 ante

It's very rare to see players all in during Level 1 of a tournament in which they start with 200 big blinds. But that's where Emi Hibuse found herself a few moments ago.

The board was already out, {4-Spades}{9-Clubs}{6-Spades}{j-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}. Hibuse was out of position to button player Mike Takayama, who made a massive over-bet of 18,000 into a pot with just a few thousand chips in it. Hibuse tanked for a few minutes before calling all in for 10,125. Takayama immediately tapped the table "good call" and mucked. With Takayama having mucked, Hibuse never showed the hand with which she was willing to risk her tournament life in Level 1. But whatever it was, it allowed her to double up back to the starting stack.
