Many Hopefuls Return on Day 2

Asia Championship of Poker
Asia Championship of Poker

After four levels and a bit on Day 1 there are still 140 players in the hunt. A total of 22 players will get paid in this event, and that's still miles away for everyone. Even chip leader Yue Hin Lam is in no way guaranteed to make a deep run, and plenty of interesting poker remains to be played.

The goal today is to play at least five levels and the remaining part of the fifth level. It's going to be a long day today which is expected to finish around 3:00 AM. With the amazing structure presented to the players here in Macau it will be a tough challenge for the qualifiers to face all the top pros that are still remaining.

PokerNews.com will follow all the action throughout the night, as we are looking to find some favorites to win the HKD $4,240,000 first place prize!

If you didn't catch this video yesterday, Lynn Gilmartin gives a quick tour of our home for this week:

Level: 5

Blinds: 200/400

Ante: 50

The Recovery Level

Level 5 : 200/400, 50 ante

The first level of play has proven itself as a true recovery level. Even though the day didn't start till 5:00 PM local time, there are still plenty of players who do not seem up for the challenge just yet.

The player party at D2 last night was brilliant, and the PokerNews video team was there to film it all. Make sure to keep checking the blog as the party video will be published later today.

For know play has been calm, and with players munching on post-drinking recovery food we expect to see more fireworks in just a few orbits.

ElkY Doubles Through Sun

Action folded to Cheung Yin Sun in middle position, and she limped in for 400. After that, play folded over to Team PokerStars Pro Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier in the small blind. Grospellier was one of the short stacks returning to play today, and he moved all in for 5,275. After John Conkright folded from the big blind, Sun tank-called.

Sun held the {A-Hearts}{5-Hearts}, but her suited ace was dominated by Grospellier's {A-Clubs}{Q-Spades}.

On the flop, Grospellier paired his queen when the {K-Hearts}{Q-Clubs}{J-Clubs} fell. Both players picked up a Broadway straight draw and that looked like the best way for Sun to get a piece of this pot with a chop.

The turn was the {2-Diamonds}, and the river brought the {5-Diamonds}. Both players finished with a pair, but Grospellier's queens bettered Sun's fives to give him the double up. Sun was knocked back to 7,500 in chips.

The Defending Champ is Gone

Randy Lew
Randy Lew

PokerStars Team Online Randy 'Nananoko' Lew has just been eliminated by Timothy Finne. The defending champ, who took down this event last year for USD$484,617, started the day with less than the starting stack and didn't catch a break here on Day 2.

By the looks of it Finne had raised to 1,000 from the small blind when Lew decided to raise to 9,600 with just 200 chips left behind. Finne made the call as we arrived on the scene.

The flop brought out {Q-Diamonds}{2-Clubs}{9-Spades} and quickly both players put in the remaining chips.

Timothy Finne: {A-Hearts}{Q-Spades}
Randy Lew: {A-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds}

The board ran out {4-Diamonds}, {J-Hearts} and Lew was knocked out. Finne is up to over the average stack and looking good here early on.

Nitsche Pulls The Trigger

Dominik Nitsche is definitely not known for his conservative play, and he just proved this once again.

When we arrived on the scene the German pro had invested 6,600 in the pot. He was seated in the cutoff, and the player in the small blind had 2,750 in front of him. Nitsche had put in a four-bet and his opponent went into the tank for quite some time.

After a while the small blind decided to five-bet to 11,700.

"I'm all in," Nitsche responded quickly to put an immediate end to this raising war. The WSOP and WPT winner's opponent folded and the pot was shipped to the German.
