Masato Yokosawa Leads The Way After Day 1a

Level 8 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
Masato Yokosawa
Masato Yokosawa

The first of two starting days for the PokerStars.net Asia-Pacific Poker Tour in the Paradise Casino Walkerhill Seoul drew a crowd of 118 players. After eight levels of play, Masato Yokosawa came out on top.

The tournament action was fast-paced as just 45 players managed to make it through to Day 2. Team PokerStars Pros Bryan Huang and Celina Lin did not make it, while Japanese World Series of Poker bracelet winner and PokerStars Team Online member Naoya Kihara bagged up 39,200 in chips.

The start of the day, unlike at many other events around the world, was fast and furious. The players in the Main Event mainly hail from China, Australia, and Hong Kong and it became apparent they did not come here to sit around. After Director of Poker Operations and WSOP bracelet winner Kevin Song spoke the most famous words in poker, "shuffle up and deal," the action started and it was interesting all the way throughout.

Among the high rollers that showed up for today's flight were Ping San Chan, who finished fourth in the APT Manilla Millions for over $530,000, but his experience in bigger buy-in events did not help him today. Chan was knocked out, which could not be said for his friend Winfred Yu. Yu, who's known as the host of some of the biggest cash games in the world, played a patient game and managed to make it through to Day 2 with 36,900 in chips.

One of the most successful players in the Asia-Pacific region of the last couple of years has been Sam Razavi, and he came to play. Razavi, who won the APPT Grand Final in 2012, had a swingy day, but managed to survive with 37,300 in chips. Bernard Geom wasn't as lucky, and he got knocked out during the fifth level of play after losing a big hand with jacks to queens. Interestingly, Geom was left with chips behind after he ran out of the room upon seeing his jacks had lost, and the rest of his stack was eventually blinded out.

Huang, a regular on the APPT, had an unsuccessful day as he was knocked out. Huang lost the hand for his tournament life with ace-queen to pocket fours that sent him packing. Huang will have plenty of opportunity to redeem himself this week in one of the many side events, or at the cash-game tables, which have been jam packed all day. Day 2 also wasn't reached by Lin, who ran two pair into a set, ultimately busted out holding ace-eight to the ace-ten of her opponent.

In the meantime, Japanese player Yokosawa was stacking up chips left and right, and his smart play got him the overnight chip lead. One of the players looking to challenge Yokosawa on Day 2 is PokerStars Team Online's Kihara. Kihara had a great day and he eventually bagged up a little under average.

Last, but certainly not least, there was defending champion Aaron Lim. Lim had a day filled with swings and eventually he bagged up 23,900.

That's it for Day 1a, and please make sure to tune back in with us tomorrow at 12 p.m. local time for the second and final starting day of this event. Once again, PokerNews.com will bring you all the live updates.

Huang Hits The Rail in Search For Fried Chicken

Level 6 : 300/600, 75 ante
Bryan Huang

Team PokerStars Pro Byan Huang has just been knocked out from the APPT Seoul Main Event and he was kind enough to share with us what happened.

Huang explained that he raised to 1,300 from the hijack holding ace-queen and the player on the button decided to make the call. After both blinds folded the flop brought out {7-}{7-}{6-} and Huang fired out 1,500 in an attempt to take down the pot right there. This plan did not work as his opponent moved all in, and Huang called off his remaining 5,600 chips.

Huang was in trouble with his two over cards, but he still had outs being up against pocket fours. The board however did not change and he was knocked out during the sixth level of play.

"I'll play most of the side events depending on how hungover I am tomorrow," Huang joked after he hit the rail, referring to the epic PokerStars Party that's planned for tonight.

Huang, a Korean food connoisseur proven by this photo he put up on his Instagram last night, made an effort to point out that the party cannot be missed because of the excellent fried chicken with spicy sauce that will be up for grabs at some point tonight. "Korean food is the best, it just makes me so happy," Huang added, as he brought up one more good reason for players around the world to keep an eye on making it down to Seoul during a big poker event like the APPT.

When it comes to Huang's next big poker event the wait won't be long as he's gearing up to play APPT Macau in May and subsequently the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas.

Yu Grinds Quietly

Level 6 : 300/600, 75 ante
Winfred Yu
Winfred Yu

It's interesting to see a man like Winfred Yu play in a poker tournament. Yu doesn't say much, he smiles every now and always seems very polite when present at the table. There is however a lot more going on at all times on his phone, as Yu's known to host the biggest live cash game in the world.

Photos that Yu's posted on a Chinese social media platform similar to Facebook called weibo have gotten global attention as the stakes being played are inconceivable. Recently PokerNews' own Chad Holloway interviewed Tom Hall, a Macau regular, and he gave some very interesting insights into the world of high stakes poker in Asia.

So while most players are concerned with their tournament life here in Seoul, Yu might be more interested in when the next big game takes off after he gets back to Macau. As he's constantly on his phone we're assuming that there might be some text messages with the likes of Tom Dwan, Richard Yong and Paul Phua going around to see when the next multi-million dollar cash game will include some new challengers.

Currently Yu sits on around 22,000 chips and a phone filled with contacts that look to put the Global National Product (GDP) of a small country on the line in a cash game on a given night.

Second APPT Title Looming For Razavi?

Level 2 : 100/200, 0 ante
Sam Razavi after winning the APPT Grand Final
Sam Razavi after winning the APPT Grand Final

We agree, it's still very early to make predictions but British pro Sam Razavi just pointed out that his start here today is very similar to the successful one he had in Melbourne two years ago.

Sam RazaviJust starting level 2 of #APPT Seoul.

In August 2012 Razavi managed to take down the APPT Grand Final after beating a field of 257 to lock up the A$326,125 first-place prize. Since this huge score Razavi has been a cashing machine, as he finished in the money in tournaments ranging from Cambodia to Scotland and the Philippines to the Isle of Man.

Cashing in this tournament would be Razavi's 100th live tournament cash, but he won't add a new flag to his impressive list of results as he's already done well in plenty of tournaments in South Korea. Razavi has cashed in 18 different countries so far, which puts him tied for eight on the 'most countries cashed in' list. The chase for the number one spot on that list will be a tough one as Casey Kastle leads the way with 35 countries followed by Dominik Nitsche and Team PokerStars Pro Marcel Luske at 23.

Lin and Yu Join The Party

Level 2 : 100/200, 0 ante
Celina Lin
Celina Lin

While the player party kicks off tonight at The Flair Bar the poker party is going on in the poker room right now. Two poker celebrities were just spotted as Winfred Yu and Team PokerStars Pro Celina Lin sat down and join the action.

Lin, to date the only two-time winner of the Macau Poker Cup Red Dragon, has $421,709 in live tournament earnings and is always someone to look out for. Lin currently ranks 13th on the Chinese all-time money list and we're looking forward to see what she has in store for us this week.

Yu, from Hong Kong, is known as one of the highest stakes player in the world and a frequent participant in the Super High Rollers. Yu's known to host the biggest cash games in the world in Starworld Macau where the likes of Tom Dwan and Andrew Robl regularly play.

Yu's biggest live tournament result came in 2012 when he finished third in the Aspers €100k for £330,000 (US $535,028) and in total he has just shy of $1.3 million in live tournament earnings.
