Broom Swept Out

Swept Away!
Swept Away!
2008 Melbourne Champs Main Event Champion James Broom has just been eliminated from the tournament. Moving all in on a board reading {K-Spades}{8-Hearts}{3-Spades} with {K-Clubs}{9-Spades} he was called by his opponent with {8-Spades}{5-Spades}.

The turn landed the {8-Diamonds} and river fell the {a-Spades} to see Broom head to the rail short of the dinner break.

Solomon Still in the Hunt

Jarred Solomon was the winner of Event #5, AU$1,100 H.O.R.S.E. He's showing some chips in no-limit hold'em, too. With the board showing {8-Clubs} {7-Clubs} {4-Hearts} {8-Hearts}, Ryan Hurst checked to Solomon, who bet 4,500. Hurst then asked for a count (about 19,000) and check-raised to 25,000.

Solomon was stuck. He stood up from his chair, looked at the board, looked at Hurst's bet, and then looked back at the board in total puzzlement. He sat back down but still couldn't figure out what to do. "Why so much?" he asked Hurst. Hurst gave no response. Finally, with a shrug, Solomon nodded 'yes' and said, "I call."

Hurst turned over {6-Spades} {8-Spades} for trip eights with a straight draw. Solomon turned over {8-Diamonds} {9-Spades} for trip eights of his own with a better kicker. He gave a short fist pump when the river blanked {2-Clubs}.

"I thought you had a straight!" Hurst said after the hand.

"I knew you had something massive," replied Solomon. Then he added, "I love blowing up. That's my thing." It was no blow-up this time, only a double-up to 40,000.

Hunter Busted By Antonius

Kent Hunter opened from the cutoff to 1,050 and found two callers including Patrik Antonius.

On a board of {8-Spades}{7-Hearts}{J-Hearts} Hunter led for 3,200 and Antonius raised to 8,500. The other player in the pot folded and Hunter tanked before calling all in for his tournament life.

Antonius: {J-Spades}{8-Diamonds}
Hunter: {9-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}

The turn landed the {6-Hearts} and river the {A-Diamonds} seeing Hunter exit to the rail as Antonius climbed to over 50,000 in chips.

Aristidou Eliminates Player, Builds Stack

Aristidou eliminates another
Aristidou eliminates another
Well respected local player and Australian tourney regular Peter Aristidou has just eliminated yet another player to continue building his stack.

With two limpers in front Aristidou raised to 1,050 from late position and went to the flop three handed. After both players checked the {5-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}{3-Spades} flop to Aristidou he bet out 3,000 and found a player call for his chips.

The all-in player tabled {j-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds} for a flush draw, while Aristidou rolled over {A-Diamonds}{a-Clubs}. With the board running out {k-Spades}{2-Clubs} Aristidou eliminated yet another player, moving his stack up to 65,000.

Gursel Ali Doubles

Gursel Ali has found a well needed double at the expense of Leo Boxell, when his {A-Diamonds}{Q-Clubs} outdrew Boxell's {9-Hearts}{9-Spades} on a final board reading {Q-Hearts}{7-Hearts}{K-Hearts}{4-Clubs}{A-Clubs}.

Ali doubled to 5,600 but will need a few more to feel comfortable as the average stack is now creeping to over 34,000.

Andrews Continues to Soar

Sorel Mizzi opened to 1,050 from the cutoff and was instantly met with a 2,550 reraise from Danny Andrews on the button and Mizzi made the call.

On a flop of {8-Hearts}{Q-Clubs}{7-Clubs} Mizzi check-called a 2,500-chip bet from Andrews and when the {J-Clubs} landed on the turn Mizzi led for 5,500. Puzzled but still confident, Andrews raised to 11,000 and Mizzi made the call.

The river of the {8-Clubs} went check, check by both players and Andrews tabled {9-Spades}{10-Spades} for a straight as Mizzi mucked his cards slumping back down to 39,300 as Andrews jumped to 80,500 in chips.
