Sorel Mizzi - People Person

Paul O'Brien got his 111,000 chips in good with pocket jacks against Sorel Mizzi's pocket nines. Jacks held up on a board of all small cards to give O'Brien the double up to 228,000.

Mizzi is one of 41 players left in the field. PokerNews presenter Gloria Balding caught up with him earlier in the day. They chatted about Mizzi's "people" skills. Have a look!

Time Nearly Up for Timex

Michael "Timex" McDonald is now flirting with elimination after losing a hand to Rajkumar Ramakrishnan.

On the {j-Clubs}{q-Hearts}{9-Clubs} flop Ramakrishnan check called a 26,000 chip bet from McDonald. The turn {5-Diamonds} saw more of the same with Ramakrishnan check calling a 55,000 chip bet. The river {8-Clubs} saw Ramakrishnan fire out 91,000 enough to put Timex all in and after going into the tank for a while McDonald eventually made the fold.

Ramakrishnan moves up to 820,000, McDonald is down to just 91,000.

Patrik Antonius Eliminated in 41st Place (AU$20,000)

Patrik Antonius - 41st Place
Patrik Antonius - 41st Place
We've lost the player who was arguably the biggest name left in the field. Patrik Antonius had a tough day today, never really amassing any chips. His demise came in a three-way pot that was raised preflop by Elliot Smith and called by Richard Ashby.

Antonius was first to act after the flop came down {J-Clubs} {J-Hearts} {8-Hearts}. He checked, as did Smith and Ashby. On the turn {3-Diamonds}, Antonius bet 22,000. Each of his opponents called to the river, which fell {5-Clubs}. Antonius led out again for 70,000. That was enough to chase off Smith, but Ashby responded by moving all in for more than 400,000. He had Antonius well covered.

Antonius tanked for as long as we've seen anyone tank in this tournament, probably a solid five minutes. He finally called time on himself. As a floor supervisor counted down the final five seconds of Antonius' allotted one minute, Antonius called and tabled {K-Spades} {j-Spades} for trip jacks. Ashby showed {J-Diamonds} {5-Diamonds} for a full house that hit on the river. That was the end of Patrik Antonius.

Ashby has more than 600,000 chips now.

Capra Flushes the River

Jonathan Plens opened to 12,500 preflop, and Zach Gruneberg made the call off the button. Sam Capra decided to join in the fun from the big blind and they went three-handed to a {9-Clubs}{6-Clubs}{j-Spades} flop. All the players checked and the turn came {6-Spades}. Capra was first out of the blocks betting 20,000 with Plens making the call. Gruneberg had seen enough, and folded. The {4-Clubs} hit the river and Capra fired 50,000 which Plens called.

Capra tabled {k-Clubs}{j-Clubs} for a rivered king high flush, good for the pot as Plens mucked. Capra moves up to 380,000. Plens down to 300,000.

Paul O'Brien Eliminated in 40th Place (AU$25,000)

The pace of eliminations hasn't slowed down as much as we expected it to slow down. Paul O'Brien is the last player to give up the ghost. He check-called a bet of 30,000 from Dixon Ruecker on a flop of {5-Hearts} {7-Hearts} {6-Diamonds}, check-called 75,000 more when the turn fell {j-Clubs}, and check-called all in on the river {5-Diamonds}. Ruecker didn't have much -- just the other two fives {5-Spades} {5-Clubs} for quads. O'Brien mucked his hand, but he doesn't leave empty-handed. He gets AU$25,000 in prize money.

Format Note

When we get down to 36 players remaining in the tournament, the players will re-draw for seats. Play will move from eight-handed tables to six-handed tables.

38 players still have chips.

Lechich Takes a Hit, Then Doubles

Fresh off taking a 50,000 chip hit against Annica Ivert, Tino Lechich was keen to reestablish his position. He found more then an opportunity to do so against Zac Fellows.

On a flop of {8-Diamonds}{k-Diamonds}{7-Spades} Lechich fired out 20,000 and was raised to 90,000 by Fellows. Lechich then moved all in for 136,500, which Fellows of course called.

Lechich {k-Spades}{q-Hearts} for top pair.
Fellows {7-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds} for bottom pair and a flush draw.

The {q-Spades} turn was good to Lechich, as was the {6-Clubs} river, safely doubling him through to 350,000. Fellows drops to 375,000.

Michael McDonald Eliminated in 39th Place (AU$25,000)

Michael McDonald - 39th Place
Michael McDonald - 39th Place
It was David versus Goliath when Rajkumar Ramakrishnan opened for 20,000 from the small blind and Michael McDonald pushed all in for 83,000 from the big blind. Ramakrishnan called.

Ramakrishnan: {A-Clubs} {5-Clubs}
Michael McDonald: {7-Hearts} {7-Diamonds}

McDonald had to dodge a pesky ace, and he couldn't do it. It was the {A-Spades} in the window, joined by the {8-Spades} and {3-Diamonds}. The turn and river were running clubs, {k-Clubs} and {q-Clubs}, that didn't help anyone. As a result, McDonald joined the large throng on the rail.

Ramakrishnan has taken over the chip lead. He's close to 900,000.

John Overbeek Eliminated in 38th Place (AU$25,000)

John Overbeek - 38th place
John Overbeek - 38th place
John Overbeek has been eliminated in 38th place after running into Sam Capra.

Preflop, Capra opened to 15,000 and Capra upped it to 40,000 from the button. Capra made the call and the players went to the flop.

On the {5-Spades}{k-Diamonds}{6-Spades}, Capra opened to 50,000 and Overbeek moved all in over the top for 223,000. After thinking for a moment, Capra made the call and tabled {A-Clubs}{k-Diamonds} for top pair, top kicker. Overbeek's tournament life was in jeopardy as he rolled over {10-Diamonds}{10-Hearts} and he was eliminated when the turn {6-Clubs} and river {2-Spades} both missed him.

Overbeek goes out in 38th and earns AU$25,000 for his efforts. Capra moves up to 620,000.

Ruecker Bluffs His Way to Victory

What is it with players calling the clock on themselves? It happened for the third time today in a hand between Dixon Ruecker and Sorel Mizzi. Mizzi was in the big blind for the hand and called a raise to 17,000 from Ruecker. The flop was huge, coming down {A-Hearts} {K-Diamonds} {A-Spades}. Mizzi quickly checked it over to Ruecker, who showed no fear in firing out a continuation bet of 20,000. Mizzi called.

Both players checked the {3-Hearts} turn. When the dealer produced the {5-Diamonds} as the river card, Mizzi opted to lead out for 51,000. Ruecker raised him to 150,000. Mizzi, with 245,000 chips behind his bet, tanked for several minutes. It was long enough that he finally called a clock on himself, and then folded.

Ruecker opened {J-Spades} {8-Spades} -- a stone bluff -- drawing murmurs from the rail. He moved up to 630,000 in chips.
