Dylan Honeyman Leads After Day 2 of Fourth-Largest Aussie Millions in History

Level 12 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante
Dylan Honeyman
Dylan Honeyman

If there's any thought that poker's in a slump in Australia, the 2016 Aussie Millions Main Event put it to rest. The Southern Hemisphere's most prestigious tournament attracted 732 players, up 84 players from the year before, and the largest turnout since 2010.

The increased turnout, which also made it the fourth-largest Aussie Millions Main Event in its storied 19-year history, created a juicy prize pool of AU$7.32 million that will be distributed to the top 80 players. Of that, AU$1.6 million has been reserved for the winner.

After five one-hour levels of play on Wednesday, approximately 150 players remained in contention with Australia's own Dylan Honeyman and his stack of 517,200 leading the way.

Among those who will return on Day 3 are Jean-Pascal Savard (455,200), Bobby Zhang (425,900), Daniel Engels (421,300), Jason Brown (401,600), and James Obst (378,500), who all bagged big stacks. Also still alive are Samantha Abernathy (269,500), Mustapha Kanit (269,000), Philipp Gruissem (260,100), Kitty Kuo (233,800), Ari Engel (228,600), Stephen Chidwick (222,900), and Joe Hachem (139,700).

Of course, not everyone was so fortunate. Among those to fall on Day 2 were 2015 European Poker Awards Media Person of the Year Marc Convey, European Poker Tour Malta champ Niall Farrell, Australian Poker Hall of Famer Gary Benson, Team PokerStars Pro members Celina Lin, Yaxi Zhu, Bryan Huang, Randy Lew, and Jason Mercier, as well as former Aussie Millions champs Manny Stavropoulos and Tyron Krost.

Stavropoulos and Krost were both eliminated by the same man, Benjamin Pollak, and Stavropoulos' elimination paved the way for no back-to-back winner.

Stavropoulos fell early on when he ran pocket nines into Pollak's tens, and Krost followed him out the door a short time later. If you recall, Krost won the Tournament of Champions back in 2012 — which invited all former Aussie Millions winners to an invite-only freeroll. As a result, he won free buy-ins to the Aussie Millions Main Event for life. Krost was freerolling, but his hope of cashing in came to an end when he ran jacks into Pollak's pocket kings.

That left Ami Barer as the only former champ still in contention. Barer, who topped a field of 668 two years ago, is in good shape to make another deep run bagging a stack of 260,000. Impressively, Barer finished in 11th place last year in his title-defense run.

Day 3 will kick off at 12:30 p.m. local time on Thursday. The money bubble should burst as players look to make it through seven levels of play. The PokerNews Live Reporting team will be there every step of the way to capture the action, so be sure to join us then.

In the meantime, check out this "Last Word" game featuring Jessica Dawley:

Tony Dunst
Tony Dunst

On the featured table we just saw the tail-end of a three-way all in that involved Richard Ashby, Julian Colman and Tony Dunst. Ashby was the short stack, and all in for 18,400 while Colman risked 77,300 in the following showdown.

Colman: {J-Hearts}{J-Spades}
Ashby: {Q-Clubs}{Q-Spades}
Dunst: {K-Diamonds}{K-Clubs}

The board ran out {6-Spades}{9-Clubs}{5-Hearts}{10-Clubs}{5-Spades} and both Colman and Ashby were knocked out.

Painful River Cripples Bardah

Level 11 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
Ronnie Bardah
Ronnie Bardah

Bernard Beh just raised to 3,500 and the action folded to Ronnie Bardah in the big blind. Bardah three-bet to 8,800 and Beh moved all in for 55,200. Bardah wasn't too pleased having to a play a massive all-in pre flop, but he made the call.

Bardah: {J-Spades}{J-Clubs}
Beh: {A-Diamonds}{K-Hearts}

The flop brought out {7-Hearts}{9-Clubs}{5-Clubs}, keeping Bardah in the lead, and the {7-Clubs} on the turn took away some of Beh's outs. The river however, to much dismay of Bardah, brought the {A-Hearts}.

"And the river was a club!" Bardah yelled.

"Four outs, only four out!" Bardah continued, as he was left with just 2,000 chips.

Beh was pushed the pot and Bardah sat back down smiling, "I'm just complaining like a little baby."

On the very next hand a player raised to 3,500 and Bardah called all in from the small blind. The player in the big blind called, and Bardah lifted his cards up high, showing them to the player on his right in anticipation of the flop.

It was clearly visible Bardah held {Q-Spades}{2-Spades}, and he showed a big smile when the flop brought out {K-Spades}{3-Spades}{7-Spades}. Bardah flopped a flush, but he had to wait out the action, which was checked all the way down on {5-Spades} turn and the {4-Spades} river.

"Flopped it" Bardah laughed, showing his cards to the table.

"Nobody has the six or the ace of spades?" he added, but both his opponents mucked, keeping him in the game to mount a possible comeback. A few minutes later Bardah Tweeted the following, as his comeback is now well underway.

Huge Three-Way All-In Hand Cripples Pollak, Triples Savard

Level 11 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
Jean-Pascal Savard
Jean-Pascal Savard

A huge hand just went down at Table 31 that certainly shook up the table dynamics.

Jean-Pascal Savard was enjoying a massage when he raised to 4,000 from the hijack. Shai Liu, perhaps steaming after doubling up Jason Les a short time earlier (at least that is how it could have been interpreted), then three-bet all in for 101,600 from the cutoff. Benjamin Pollak seemed suspicious and eyed up Liu before moving all in over the top from the button. The blinds both folded and then Savard surprised the entire table by snap-calling off for 105,900.

Savard: {a-Spades}{a-Clubs}
Liu: {k-Spades}{k-Clubs}
Pollak: {j-Spades}{j-Diamonds}

Liu actually held a legitimate hand, and his overbet would have worked against Pollak. Unfortunately for him, Savard held the granddaddy of all hands and scooped the pot after the board ran out a clean {10-Hearts}{q-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}{4-Spades}{6-Spades}.

Pollak was crippled on the hand while Liu was eliminated from the tournament.

An Orbit w/ Chip Leader James Obst

Level 10 : 600/1,200, 200 ante
James Obst
James Obst

James Obst began the day as the chip leader — which he bagged on Day 1a — and he's picked up right where he left off. In fact, Obst has nearly doubled his stack thus far today and still sits atop the counts.

We decided to spend an entire orbit at Table 50, which is not only playing host to Obst, but also Poker Hall of Famer Erik Seidel and Team PokerStars Pro Jason Mercier, that latter of who is on life support with just 10,000 in chips.

Obst, who has $1,132,108 in lifetime tournament earnings, is looking to make a deep run in the tournament and improve upon his 19th-place finish back in 2013, his best-ever finish in this tournament. Here's an entire orbit from Obst's perspective.

Hand #1 (Under the Gun): Obst folded.

Hand #2 (Big Blind): Action folded to the player in the small blind, who limped, and Obst checked his option from the big to see a {j-Hearts}{3-Hearts}{k-Spades} flop. The small blind led out for 2,000 and Obst quickly folded.

Hand #3 (Small Blind): The player in the cutoff raised to 2,800, the button called, and Obst folded. Seidel called from the big blind and three players took a flop of {9-Spades}{q-Clubs}{4-Diamonds}. Seidel checked and then both he and the player on the button folded when the cutoff continued for 4,700.

Hand #4 (Button): The cutoff opened for 3,000 and Obst folded. Mercier did the same from the big blind after flashing one of his cards. "Another deuce," he explained.

Hand #5 (Cutoff): The player in the hijack raised to 3,000 and won another pot after everyone folded.

Hand #6 (Hijack): Action folds to Obst and he releases. After Seidel does the same, Mercier shoves the button. Both blinds folded. "Not messing around guys," Mercier said and showed the {5-Diamonds}{5-Clubs}.

Hand #7 (Middle Position): The under-the-gun player raised to 2,700 and Obst three-bet to 8,300. Action folded back to the original raiser, who called, and the two saw a flop of {5-Spades}{q-Spades}{2-Hearts}. The under-the-gun player folded and Obst continued for 7,500. That did the trick as his opponent folded.

Hand #8 (Early Position): Obst raised to 2,700 and took down the blinds and antes.

It wasn't the most action-packed Orbit, but Obst managed to increase his stack a bit. Meanwhile, Mericer is in desperate need of spinning it up.

Stevan Chew's Stack Eliminated

Level 10 : 600/1,200, 200 ante
Stevan Chew
Stevan Chew

We missed all the preflop action and only caught the action from the flop. On {4-Spades}{6-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds} we witnessed Stevan Chew (middle position) betting 26,500. His neighbor (hijack) in the one seat called after some tanking.

The turn came the {2-Spades} and Chew shoved all in for 66,100. His opponent buried his face in his arms for a second before tanking and thinking while staring at Chew. He eventually called, and it was time to put the cards on their backs.

Stevan Chew: {5-Clubs}{6-Clubs}
Opponent: {J-Spades}{J-Diamonds}

The river came the {4-Hearts} and a non involved older player almost had a heart attack; "Wow! Wow! What a hand! Oh my goodness! Oh my goodness!"

While Chew's opponent muttered "I thought you bluffed me with ace-king or ace-queen or something. Low board, its possible", Chew just counted out the chips he needed to part with.

"That's twice now that you had the goods with all the chips in. Those are bad days man, bad days" Kevin O'Donnell said, though we imagine Chew wasn't really comforted by it.

Chew's opponent had 63,700, leaving Chew with just 2,400. Chew doubled the next hand with {A-Spades}{2-Diamonds} against Kevin O'Donnell's {10-Spades}{J-Hearts} to get back to 6.5 big blinds, but was eliminated not much later.

Randy Lew Couldn't Dodge a Queen

Level 10 : 600/1,200, 200 ante
Randy Lew
Randy Lew

We asked Manig Loeser what had happened to Randy Lew, and he and his neighbor told us the details of the PokerStars Team Online's bust out.

The player under the gun had opened to 2,700 and a player in middle position three-bet to 7,500. Randy Lew cold-four bet to 14,000 and action folded around to the three-bettor. That player shoved all in and Lew called all in for his approximate 45,000.

Lew was in pole position to receive a full double as he had {A-}{A-} and was up against {Q-}{Q-}. The board however ran out {K-}{Q-}{3-}{6-}{3-} giving his opponent a full house and eliminating Lew.

Mike McDonald Eliminated by Daniel Reijmer

Level 10 : 600/1,200, 200 ante
Mike McDonald
Mike McDonald

Mike McDonald has been eliminated from the 2015 Aussie Millions Main Event. Here's what happened.

McDonald opened from middle position to 2,600 and his next door neighbor Daniel Reijmer, a well rounded pro from the Netherlands, three-bet to 6,500. McDonald made the call.

The flop came {A-}{7-}{4-} with two hearts and McDonald check called a bet of 5,500. The turn was an off suit {10-} and McDonald checked again. Reijmer fired a bet of 12,000. McDonald now shoved all in for 55,000 and Reijmer made the call.

Daniel Reijmer: {J-Hearts}{9-Hearts}
Mike McDonald: {A-}{7-}

Reijmer needed to hit a heart or {8-} to eliminate his opponent, and did just that with the {Q-Hearts} on the river.

Exit for McDonald, a 156,000 stack for Reijmer. The two of them shared their feelings on twitter afterwards.

Defending Champ's Freeroll Comes to an End

Level 9 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
Tyron Krost
Tyron Krost

Back at the 2012 Aussie Millions, Tyron Krost won the Tournament of Champions Event — which invited all former Aussie Millions winners to an invite-only freeroll. As a result, he won free buy-ins to the Aussie Millions Main Event for life.

Krost cashed in on it a year later when he finished 41st in the 2013 Aussie Million for AU$20,000. He was looking to add some more off the freeroll, but his attempt just came to an end at the hands of Benjamin Pollak.

We missed the elimination as it happened, but according to a player at the table Krost busted after a preflop raising war saw him get his stack all in holding pocket jacks against Pollak's kings. The board ran out clean and the 2010 champ hit the rail.

Rast Loses Lots

Level 9 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
Brian Rast
Brian Rast

Brian Rast raised it up from first positions and the two players directly to his left both called.

The flop gave the three {3-Diamonds}{K-Clubs}{5-Clubs} to work with and Rast was first to act. He checked and his neighbor made a bet. The third player called and Rast now check raised to 26,500. The first player called, the third player shoved all in for 59,100. Rast tanked for a fair bit before calling, his neighbor called as well to grow the pot to over 180,000.

The turn came the {5-Hearts} and Rast shoved all in for his last 20,600. His neighbor, under the gun plus one, made the call and it was time for all three of them to open their cards.

Brian Rast: {A-Spades}{A-Clubs}
Under the gun plus one: {K-Hearts}{J-Diamonds}
Under the gun plus two: {5-Diamonds}{5-Spades}

The last player was guaranteed to triple up as he had an unbeatable quads. Rast was deemed to win the 40,000 side pot with his aces, only needing to dodge the two remaining kings in the deck. The {J-Clubs} on the river was effectively a blank and Rast won the small side pot to stay alive, while under the gun plus two tripled up to almost 200,000.
