Ari Engel and Tony Dunst Headline Aussie Millions Main Event Final Table

Level 26 : 25,000/50,000, 5,000 ante
Main Event Bracelet
Main Event Bracelet

The 2016 Aussie Millions Main Event has reached its final table. Returning on Sunday, Jan. 31, are Ari Engel, Tony Dunst, Samantha Abernathy, Alexander Lynskey, Kitty Kuo, John Apostolidis, and Dylan Honeyman to battle for the Southern Hemisphere's most prestigious poker prize and the life-changing $1.6 million payday that comes with it.

Leading the final seven was Engel after he bagged up 8.155 million in chips, and the remaining competitors are all guaranteed a cool $210,000.

Along with his chip lead, Engel brings a tough poker résumé to the finale that includes career live tournament earnings in excess of $2.24 million. Originally from Toronto, Canada, Engel spends his days traveling the tournament circuit chasing poker glory. He did live in Melbourne for eight years when he was younger, so winning this title would be extra sweet for the player who has plenty of friends and family nearby.

Only six people stand between Engel and the most remarkable win of his career, but those six will provide quite the competition, led by Tony Dunst and his second-place stack of 5.99 million. Like Engel, Dunst spent time living in Australia and will share a similarly heightened feeling of fulfillment should he go on to victory.

The most interesting part of Dunst's run was that it almost never happened. Prior to buying in, Dunst had lost one of the two $5,000 chips that he was going to buy in with. Angered with himself and plenty flustered, the American World Poker Tour host was ready to up and leave Melbourne altogether, but friends talked him back into playing, and now he has reached the final stage in an epic turnaround of fortune.

Along with the stories of Engel and Dunst, we would be remiss if we didn't mention that two women are still alive in the event as well. In the modern era of the Aussie Millions when the event's buy-in was raised to $10,000, only three prior times did a woman reach the final table — Kirsty Gazes in 2007, Annette Obrestad in 2010, and Jay Tan in 2013. Each of them finished in seventh place, which means that with Samantha Abernathy and Kitty Kuo both making the final table, the event is guaranteed its best female finisher ever.

Honeyman, who was one of three Australians to reach the final table, finished with the shortest stack heading into the final table with 885,000 in chips.

With so much at stake in the event, a much deserved day off will allow the players to rest their tensions and focus on what's to come, but that doesn't mean there won't be plenty of exciting poker action filling Crown Poker Room. Remember, the $100,000 Challenge final table will be taking place on Saturday, as Ben Tollerene heads up the pack containing Connor Drinan, Jason Mercier, Fabian Quoss, Sam Greenwood, and Fedor Holz looking to capture the event's $1.446 million top score.

KC Wong Eliminated in 8th Place (AU$160,000)

Level 26 : 25,000/50,000, 5,000 ante
KC Wong - 8th Place
KC Wong - 8th Place

It was a long final table bubble, but it just burst with the elimination of KC Wong.

It happened when Wong raised to 105,000 under the gun and action folded to Ari Engel in the big blind. He put his big stack to use by moving all in, and Wong snap-called off.

Engel: {a-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}
Wong: {7-}{7-}

It was a classic flip, but not after the {a-Diamonds}{q-Clubs}{q-Spades} flop paired Engel. Neither the {10-Spades} turn nor {5-Clubs} river helped Wong, and he was eliminated in eighth place for AU$160,000.

Samantha Abernathy
Samantha Abernathy

Tony Dunst raised from the button to 100,000 and Samantha Abernathy moved all in from the small blind for 1,665,000. Dylan Honeyman folded from the big blind, and Dunst made the call after about five seconds.

Abernathy: {Q-Diamonds}{Q-Hearts}
Dunst: {A-Clubs}{Q-Spades}

The board ran out {j-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}{4-Hearts}{5-Clubs}{3-Hearts}, and under a loud cheer from the crowd Abernathy raked in a massive double up.

Yuki Ko Eliminated in 9th Place (AU$160,000)

Level 25 : 20,000/40,000, 5,000 ante
Yuki Ko - 9th Place
Yuki Ko - 9th Place

Action folded to Ari Engel on the button and he raised to 90,000. KC Wong folded from the small blind, Yuki Ko three-bet to 315,000, and Engel thought for a bit before making the call. Ko then led out for 320,000 on the {9-Hearts}{2-Diamonds}{5-Clubs} flop, Engel called, and the dealer burned and turned the {10-Diamonds}.

Ko thought for a long time before betting 655,000, which left him about 800,000 behind. Engel paused for a few beats before announcing himself all in, and Ko called to discovered the bad news.

Engel: {a-Diamonds}{a-Clubs}
Ko: {k-Hearts}{k-Clubs}

Ko was on the bad end of a cooler, and the final card he'd see in the 2016 Aussie Millions Main Event was the useless {6-Diamonds} river.

Bobby Zhang Eliminated in 10th Place (AU$120,000)

Level 25 : 20,000/40,000, 5,000 ante
Bobby Zhang - 10th Place
Bobby Zhang - 10th Place

At the outer table, KC Wong opened for 90,000 from the cutoff and Yuki Ko three-bet jammed from the button. When action reached Bobby Zhang in the big blind, he looked down at his cards and announced that he was all in, calling off for right around 900,000. Wong quickly folded and the cards were turned up.

Zhang: {q-Spades}{q-Hearts}
Ko: {a-Diamonds}{10-Spades}

Zhang was looking to dodge an ace or some other strange runout, and he did on the {5-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}{2-Hearts} flop. Unfortunately for him, the dealer burned and turned the {A-Hearts} to pair Ko. The {J-Spades} river was no help to Zhang, and he hit the rail in tenth place.

James Obst Eliminated in 11th Place (AU$120,000)

James Obst
James Obst

Ari Engel raised to 65,000 under the gun and KC Wong right next to him in the hijack made the call. James Obst on the button pushed all in for 190,000 total and both blinds quickly released.

Action was back on Ari Engel and he four-bet to 310,000 (what should have been 315,000) and the decision was on Wong. Wong tanked for some time before folding.

Ari Engel: {A-Spades}{8-Clubs}
James Obst: {K-Clubs}{J-Hearts}

The board ran out {8-Spades}{3-Hearts}{2-Hearts}{A-Diamonds}{J-Spades} and Obst was already on his way to shake hands with Engel after the turn had him drawing dead. The local hero has been eliminated, picking up AU$120,000 for his deep run.

Cankai Zhang Eliminated in 12th Place (AU$120,000)

Cankai Zhang - 12th Place
Cankai Zhang - 12th Place

Up at the feature table, action folded to Tony Dunst on the button and he raised to 65,000. Cankai Zhang thought for a moment in the small blind and then announced himself all in for 785,000. Samantha Abernathy folded the big blind and Dunst snap-called.

Dunst: {a-Hearts}{a-Diamonds}
Zhang: {10-Diamonds}{10-Spades}

Zhang's face dropped upon seeing Dunst's pocket rockets. Zhang needed a ten of some other help to stay alive, but the {q-Clubs}{8-Spades}{6-Hearts} flop didn't do it, aside from giving him some runner-runner straight options. The {6-Clubs} turn took those away, and that left Zhang in need of a ten and a ten only on the river.

The dealer burned one last time and put out the {J-Hearts}. Zhang missed and made his way to the payout desk to collect AU$120,000 for his 12th-place finish.

Mikel Habb Eliminated in 15th Place (AU$85,000)

Level 23 : 12,000/24,000, 4,000 ante
Mikel Habb
Mikel Habb

Dylan Honeyman just raised to 50,000 and the action just folded to Mike Habb in the small blind and he made it 112,000, saying, "Oops, I wanted to call," on Samantha Abernathy's big blind.

"It's a raise, sir," the dealer announced.

Abernathy then moved all in, which was enough to cover Habb who had about 400,000 chips left, and Habb went into the tank, putting his head in his hand.

After a while Habb called, and slammed {K-Hearts}{K-Spades} onto the table.

Abernathy was in bad shape holding {6-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}, and the flop brought out {Q-Spades}{9-Hearts}{10-Spades}.

Habb, up to his usual antics screaming and cheering for himself, pointed at the sky while waiting for the turn.

The turn brought the {10-Hearts}, and Habb kept his arm aloft, but that quickly changed when the {6-Spades} shattered his dreams.

Abernathy jumped up out of her seat, and ran over to hug Kitty Kuo, while Habb was left in disbelief.

Habb shook everyone's hand before leaving the tournament room, and we'll forever remember him as the man who made the 2016 Aussie Millions Main Event very entertaining.

Tino Lechich Eliminated in 16th Place (AU$85,000)

Level 23 : 12,000/24,000, 4,000 ante
Tino Lechich
Tino Lechich

Wow!

That's the following hand summed up in one word, as Kitty Kuo, Alexander Lynskey, and Tino Lechich just played one of the biggest pots of the tournament that ended with an epic river card.

The action started with a shove from Lechich, who pushed 349,000 into the middle from the hijack seat. Kuo called from the small blind, and then the action was on Lynskey in the big blind.

"All in," Lynskey announced.

Kuo went into the tank for about half a minute before making the call to create a pot just shy of 3.5 million in chips.

Lynskey: {K-Spades}{K-Hearts}
Kuo: {A-Spades}{K-Diamonds}
Lechich: {A-Diamonds}{Q-Hearts}

The flop brought {2-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}{3-Spades}, and Lynskey stood up to look over at his friends on the rail in amazement of the massive pot. On the turn, the {J-Spades} hit, and Lynskey stayed in front.

Only one of the two remaining aces would help Kuo stay in the tournament, and Lechich already found himself drawing dead.

The {A-Hearts} hit on the river, and Kuo cheered while Lynskey stumbled back to his seat.

"It's exactly the same as last year," Lynskey sighed to Dylan Honeyman across the table of him.

Things were indeed very similar last year for Lynskey, when he got crippled after James Rann hit a river card to stay alive against him. Lynskey busted in ninth place in last year's Aussie Millions Main Event, and right now he's still in the tournament with 16 players remaining.

Meanwhile Lechich made his exit, and with that the tournament lost one of its most experienced players. Lechich's live tournament results date back to 1988, and he first cashed at Crown in 2003.

Derek Wolters Eliminated in 17th Place (AU$85,000)

Derek Wolters
Derek Wolters

Tony Dunst opened to 55,000 from first position and Derek Wolters three-bet to 150,000 from the button. Both blinds quickly released and action was back on Dunst. The WPT host four-bet to 375,000.

Wolters thought about it for half a minute or so, and moved all in for just over 1.2 million. Dunst leaned a bit forward, took a peek at his cards one last time, and said "Yeah, I call."

Derek Wolters: {J-Clubs}{J-Diamonds}
Tony Dunst: {Q-Spades}{Q-Hearts}

The flop came {2-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}{Q-Clubs} leaving Wolters just runner runner outs. The {4-Spades} on the turn sealed the deal right away and the {K-Clubs} on the river made things official.

Derek Wolters shook Tony Dunst's hand, wished him good luck in the rest of the tournament, and headed to the pay out desk to collect his AU$85,000 cheque.
