2025 Australian Poker Open Kicks Off with the A$350 Diamond Cup

Australian Poker Open
Australian Poker Open

The highly anticipated 2025 Australian Poker Open is officially underway, launching an eleven-day poker spectacle at Club Marconi at Doltone House Western Sydney. This year’s series opened with the A$350 Diamond Cup, which smashed through its massive A$500,000 guarantee with a prize pool of A$625,200—one of the largest prize pools ever attached to a buy-in at this level in Australia.

The Day 1's began on April 14 in the Diamond Cup and drew a huge field of 2,084 players from across the region, all eager to claim their share of the action. After several opening flights, the tournament has now been whittled down to around 12.5% of the field and the survivors return today, April 19, for Day 2, where the race toward the final table—and the title—continues at 12 p.m..

The PokerNews Live Reporting team is on-site to capture every major moment from the headline events, providing live updates, chip counts, photos, and all the drama from the felt. In addition to the Diamond Cup, coverage will also extend to the A$1,500 Platinum Players Championship (April 16–21), the A$3,300 APO Main Event (April 19–26), the A$10,000 The Trojan (April 22–23), the A$1,500 Heads Up Championship (April 22–23), and the A$1,200 Poker Palace Main Event (April 23–27).

Don’t miss a hand—follow along with all the action right here on PokerNews as the 2025 Australian Poker Open crowns its champions.

First Fantasy Points Up for Grabs at the APO

The 2025 Australian Poker Open isn't just about trophies—it's also the first chance for players in the A$2K Fantasy Draft to rack up points for their teams.

With 55 drafted players battling across approximately 30 events, every deep run and elimination matters. Each fantasy team consists of five players, and the leaderboard will heat up fast with A$11K for 1st, A$7K for 2nd, and A$4K for 3rd on the line.

Early signs are promising for the Banana Benders, as Cooper Feltham is up to around 900,000 chips after busting Marcial Dias to gain the upper hand in the Diamond Cup. Armon Van Wijk was not as fortunate and busted early, but did score his team some points with a cash.

Stay tuned to see who’s climbing the fantasy ranks as the APO action continues!

Bouskila On the Wrong End of a Huge Cooler

Level 19 : Blinds 10,000/25,000, 25,000 ante
Michel Bouskila
Michel Bouskila

A huge, huge hand played out before the break with Michel Bouskila finding himself on the wrong end of a huge cooler!

Bouskila said he made it 50,000 preflop and got two calls, including one from Andrew Samoa. On the flop of KKA, Bouskila bet 50,000 and only Samoa called.

Both checked the 3 turn to the 6 river, where Bouskila bet 120,000 and Samoa raised to 325,000. Bouskila then shoved, and after counting out the chips, Samoa called.

Bouskila then revealed a full house with AK, but amazingly was beat at Samoa revealed AA for top boat!

What a sick, sick cooler!

Carlberg's Cowboys Crush Moodie's Jacks

Level 21 : Blinds 20,000/40,000, 40,000 ante
Ulf Carlberg
Ulf Carlberg

Ulf Carlberg just got a huge double-up with a little help from the Cowboys after getting all in preflop for around 870,000 against Wiremu Moodie.

Carlberg was ahead with his pocket kings and extended his lead as the 69K flop gave him top set and a huge grip on the hand. However, a 10 on the turn gave Moodie some outs to spike victory as any queen would complete his straight. Instead, a 6 peeled off on the river and Carlberg doubled up.

Johan Lees
Johan Lees

Johan Lees' stack is again on the rise as he picked off an opponent's bluff and is now closing in on 3,000,000.

On a board of 45K10 there were around 700,000 chips in the pot when the small blind checked and Lees bet 255,000. After counting out his stack, the small blind shoved for around 850,000, and Lees eventually tossed in the call.

"I'm drawing dead" said the small blind before the cards were revealed.

Shortly after play resumed, Guangyu Wang shoved for around 400,000 from early position and was called by Steven Keremelevski.

Wang was way behind and needed a miracle after the 4J2 flop gave Keremelevski top pair. A 3 on the turn did bring around some chop outs, but the 8 river was no help, and Wang was sent on his way.

Hirmiz Lassoes a Big Pot From Moodie

Level 25 : Blinds 50,000/100,000, 100,000 ante
Wiremu Moodie
Wiremu Moodie

On a flop of 103Q with around 800,000 in the middle, Vieri HIrmiz had his stack of almost 1,500,000 in the middle and was put at risk by Wiremu Moodie from under the gun.

Vieri HIrmiz: KK All in
Wiremu Moodie: AQ

Moodie had flopped top pair but found himself behind to the overpair of Hirmiz, who held the Cowboys. An ace or a queen would send Hirmiz home, but instead he made top set on the 5K runout to secure a big double!

Carlberg Fast-Plays Cowboys, Oscuro Unimpressed

Level 26 : Blinds 60,000/120,000, 120,000 ante
Michael Oscuro

Ulf Carlberg shipped around 1,800,000 from middle position and was put at risk by Michael Oscuro.

Ulf Carlberg: KK All in

Carlberg was well ahead with his kings and they remained in the lead after the 835 flop. A 2 on the turn changed nothing, and Carlberg improved to top set on the K river to secure the double, much to the dismay of Oscuro.

"There's people over here open shoving 17 bigs with kings," stated Oscuro sarcastically. "I thought I must have the best hand,".

Anthony Khalil Eliminated in 24th Place (A$2,700)

Level 27 : Blinds 100,000/150,000, 150,000 ante
Anthony Khalil

Welyam Gelyana opened from under the gun to 350,000 and when it got to Anthony Khalil in the big blind, he shoved for around 2,700,000. Gelyana snap-called.

Anthony Khalil: AQ All in
Welyam Gelyana: KK

Khalil was in danger of being eliminated and needed to find some help from the runout if he wanted to survive. A flop of 4105 didn't offer much help and neither did the 9 turn. Only an ace could save Khalil, but instead the 4 completed the runout, sending him to the rail in 24th.
