Olson Leads, Hoff Eliminated on Bubble of Eventful Day 1a of Bar Poker Open Florida World Championship

Level 18 : Blinds 10,000/15,000, 15,000 ante
Charles Olson

A fast-paced and dramatic first day of play in the Bar Poker Open Florida World Championship left just 29 players from the original 281 entries, with defending champion Phil Hoff the last man out the door on the bubble for the money and Day 2.

Hoff was eliminated on the second hand of hand-for-hand play when he shoved his last 130,000 in with two pair and ran into Matthew McGuire who held a Broadway straight.

The hand gave McGuire the second-largest stack to end the night behind chip leader Charles Olson, who bagged 725,000. Rounding out the top five chip counts are Paul Chamberlain (535,000), Steve Mayer (510,000), and Chris Davis (490,000).

The day’s 281 entries created a prizepool of $80,928, with Day 1b still to come Sunday. The winner is guaranteed a $50,000 first prize.

Play ended late in Level 18 with 3:12 remaining at blinds of 10,000 / 15,000 with a 15,000 big blind ante.

The Day’s Action

Among other notables surviving the day is Will Unruh, who was at or near the top of the leaderboard most of the day, finishing with 380,000. A solid contingent of female players in the field was led by Angela Ford and her 280,000 chips. Samantha Skelly battled with a short stack for most of the day before bagging up 170,000.

The day was full of dramatic hands, including a wild set over set over set flop that saw the elimination of Bill Murphy early in the day at the hand of Linda Fuchs. Unfortunately though for Fuchs and Jolanda Tedford, the other player in the hand, none were able to advance to Day 2.

Tedford’s husband Frazier Tedford however did make it through the day, though with far less chips than he had hoped, as a late hand vs John Purdy saw his kings cracked by Purdy’s ace-queen that flopped trips and then rivered quads.

Some other players that will have to fire again on Day 1b with hopes of advancing are Bob Carswell, Amanda Nissman, Deby Goldfarb, and Richard Anderson, whose journeys to the BPO Florida World Championship were profiled here on PokerNews.

Day 1b Sunday and Beyond

Next up is Day 1b on Sunday at 11 a.m. ET where players will be able to take another $365 shot at advancing to Monday’s Day 2 where a champion will be crowned $50,000 richer. Players will also have a single re-entry available should they wish.

Defending Champion Hoff Eliminated on the Bubble

Level 18 : Blinds 10,000/15,000, 15,000 ante
Phil Hoff Eliminated

Picking action up on the flop in a raised pot, the board read J107. Phil Hoff bet 35,000 from the small blind and got called by Matt McGuire on the button.

The turn brought the Q and Hoff moved all in for about 130,000.

"Oh don't do that, I've got the straight," said McGuire as he happily called and showed his AK.

Hoff could only show 107 for two pair, and after the 2 fell on the river, the defending champion's day was done, with the final 29 players all in the money and onto Day 2.

Set Over Set Over Set!

Level 6 : Blinds 300/600, 600 ante
Linda Fuchs
Linda Fuchs

The PokerNews live reporting team was just alerted to a wild hand that saw Linda Fuchs earn a double-up and then some in the most unlikely of scenarios.

As told by her very excited tablemates, Fuchs raised to 5,000 and was called by Jolanda Tedford and Bill Murphy.

The flop came KQJ and first to act, Fuchs continued for 15,000. Tedford called and Murphy committed his final 9,000 chips.

Before the 10 turn, Fuchs moved her last 4,900 in blind and got called by Tedford.

Jolanda Tedford: QQ
Bill Murphy: JJ

It was an incredible set-over-set-over-set situation that held up on the river 8 as Fuchs boosted her stack significantly and also now has quite a story to tell.

Skelly's Stack Balloons Up

Samantha Skelly, who the PokerNews live reporting team noticed had one of the more unique card protectors in the room of a tiny balloon animal dog just alerted us to a big hand which has seen her stack blow up to six figures.

Skelly told us that she ran into the dream situation where she picked up aces versus her opponent's kings for a huge all-in preflop confrontation for just over 40,000 chips each.

Skelly's aces held and her little pink balloon dog has a lot more chips to hang out with now.

Pierce Ousts Jenne With Flush Over Flush

Level 1 : Blinds 100/100, 100 ante
James Pierce
James Pierce

With about 10,000 in the middle on a board of J1077, a pair of red T-5,000 chips were in front of Dena Jenne.
James Pierce then moved all in for about 30,000, covering Jenne.

She called to put herself at risk.

Dena Jenne: 42
James Pierce: AQ

Pierce's nut flush had coolered Jenne's baby flush, sending her to the rail after the inconsequential 3 river.

Bar Poker Open Florida World Championship Set to Begin

2022 BPO Florida World Champion Phil Hoff
2022 BPO Florida World Champion Phil Hoff

It’s time for the 2023 edition of the Florida World Championship of the Bar Poker Open (BPO) here in West Palm Beach, Florida.

One of the best poker rooms in all of Florida, The Palm Beach Kennel Club is again hosting this year’s series, which features five days of events, headlined by the invite-only $365 Championship Event which begins Saturday at 11 a.m. ET for the first of two opening flights.

After a hugely successful event last year that saw Phil Hoff from the New York Free Poker Club defeat a field of 446 entries to take home the $40,000 first prize, The BPO has stepped up the numbers even further this year, guaranteeing a $50,000 first prize and an estimated $150,000 prize pool.

Nearly 1,000 players from across the United States have travelled to South Florida for the eight-event series, with over 500 of them having earned a berth in the Championship Event via Bar Poker Open Qualifier events held in nearly 1,000 bars across the United States and online.

While the Championship Event is restricted to those players that have qualified, there are still plenty more events on the schedule, including the $150 buy-in Charity Series of Poker (CSOP) event Sunday which comes with a $5,000 guarantee.

There’s also a Deepstack Finale on Monday with a $180 buy-in and $15,000 guarantee.

Players in the opening flights of the Championship start with 30,000 chips and blinds of 100/100 with a 100 ante. Levels increase every 30 minutes and play will continue until 10% of the field remains with all players in the money to start Day 2. Registration is open until the start of Level 9, and players have a singe $365 re-entry available to them until then.

Players may also enter and bag more than one opening flight, with the ‘best bag forward’ for Day 2 at 11 a.m. on Monday. Players bagging twice will also receive a $1,000 double bag bonus, with their shortest stack being forfeited.
