Raio Leads the Field on Day 1a of the bestbet Jacksonville Spring Series $2,500 Main Event

Level 14 : 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante
Nick Raio
Nick Raio

Day 1a of the bestbet Jacksonville Spring Series $2,500 Main Event has just wrapped up with 143 entries playing their way down to the hard-stop figure of 18 players only a few seconds before stopping the clock for the final few hands of the night. When that number was reached, Nick Raio was the one atop the counts with a stack of 448,000.

Raio's stack had a nearly all-upward trajectory from the time he joined the tournament around the end of Level 5 on the day. By the second break of the day some 40 minutes later, he had more than doubled his stack. An hour later, it had doubled again and he took a stack of over 200,000 into the dinner break. His ascent only continued from there, reaching its end point in the final level of the night after eliminating Michael Wang with two pair to a combo draw.

Jermaine Gerlin, known locally as "The Lion" finished the day second in chips with 401,000, winning the bulk of his chips in a double-knockout in which he had the second-nut flush draw on the flop and got stacks in against the nut flush draw and top two pair. Drawing thin, Gerlin found running backdoor gutshot straight cards to give him what was the chip lead at the time. January's WInter Open Day 1a chip leader Dustin Holladay finished the day in third in the counts (341,000) with another strong showing that puts him in good position to improve on his 10th-place finish from a couple of months ago.

A trio of WSOP bracelet winners in James Calderaro (201,000), Byron Kaverman (110,000), and John Gorsuch (51,000) also advanced, as did Justin Zaki (116,000). Others such as Scott Stewart, "Captain" Tom Franklin, Aaron Thivyanathan, Andrew Brinkley, and Eddy Mroczkowski were less fortunate and will have another chance at Saturday's second of two starting flights.

PokerNews will be back at it come noon Saturday for Day 1b with another almost-full day on the docket. See you then.

Gerlin Overtakes the Chip Lead

Level 13 : 1,500/3,000, 3,000 ante
Jermaine "Lion" Gerlin
Jermaine "Lion" Gerlin

Yells of "LION!!!" were heard from Table 44 and Jermaine Gerlin had turned away from his seat to clap his hands in celebration. More commotion ensued, with yells that Gerlin had just taken down a three-way pot for half a million.

According to Nicholas Gee, Gerlin opened under the gun and received a call from Lawrence Brown on the button. Gee then defended his big blind and all of the chips got into the middle on a flop of {4-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}{j-Clubs}. Gee had a shot to triple his stack of around 100,000, while Brown eyed a chance to more than double.

Nicholas Gee: {j-Hearts}{5-Spades}
Lawrence Brown: {a-Clubs}{8-Clubs}
Jermaine Gerlin: {k-Clubs}{q-Clubs}

Gerlin was the least likely to win of the three but an improbable running {9-Hearts}{10-Hearts} came to give him a king-high straight. As a result, Gerlin earned the double knockout and pot which turned out to be closer to 400,000; but nonetheless, the man known as "Lion" has overtaken the chip lead. Furthermore, the pair of eliminations has brought the field down to 24, and three tables now remain. If the field is reduced to 18 before the end of Level 14, a hard stop will come into effect and end play early for the evening.

Wang Pays off Calderaro

Level 11 : 1,000/2,000, 2,000 ante
James Calderaro
James Calderaro

Action folded around to Michael Wang in the small blind and he completed. James Calderaro raised his option to 5,000 and Wang thought for about 20 seconds with Calderaro talking up his ear the entire time before he called. The flop came {3-Spades}{8-Hearts}{q-Hearts} and both players quickly checked.

The turn was {9-Hearts} and Wang checked again. Calderaro bet 5,000 and Wang thought for a couple of moments before calling. Calderaro continued to chat, asking Wang what he could have that he called with. Wang checked once more on the river {6-Spades} and Calderaro counted out 11 1K-chips and slid them forward onto the table.

"That six didn't help you," said Calderaro. Wang went into the tank, checking his cards after close to a minute. "Check your cards again. You might make a bad decision," Calderaro added. Mid-sentence, Wang reached for chips and dropped them onto the felt to call at the same time Calderaro finished his sentence.

Calderaro wasted no time showing {9-Diamonds}{9-Clubs} for a set of nines, prompting Wang to shake his head slightly and recognize a nice hand to Calderaro, who earned the pot to take him over 60,000.

All-In Player: {6-Spades}{4-Spades}
Justin Zaki: {q-Spades}{j-Hearts}

Andrews Over a Quarter Million

Level 8 : 500/1,000, 1,000 ante
Kelly Joe Andrews
Kelly Joe Andrews

Kelly Joe Andrews opened to 2,400 in the hijack and the player on the button three-bet to 6,000. Action made its way back to Andrews and he looked across the table to his opponent, eyeing his stack before four-betting to 27,400. The amount was enough to put the player on the button at risk for their stack of 22,700, and the player thought for a few moments before reluctantly committing his remaining chips.

Player on the Button: {k-Spades}{j-Hearts}
Kelly Joe Andrews: {a-Clubs}{q-Clubs}

Andrews had just been spotted with a large stack and it grew even more as a safe runout of {8-Clubs}{a-Hearts}{7-Spades}{a-Spades}{9-Spades} left his opponent drawing dead by the turn. He now looks to have the largest stack in the room with more than a quarter-million.

Dustin Delivers a Dusting

Level 7 : 400/800, 800 ante
Dustin Holladay
Dustin Holladay

Dustin Holladay opened to 2,100 under the gun and action folded around to the cutoff, who called. The small blind called as well and action went three ways to a flop of {j-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}.

The small blind checked and Holladay continuation-bet 4,000. The cutoff jammed for 21,900 and the small blind folded, prompting Holladay to quickly put stacks of chips down beside his original bet to signify a call.

All-In Player: {a-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}
Dustin Holladay: {k-Clubs}{k-Diamonds}

Holladay faded the aces and diamonds in the deck on both the turn {5-Clubs} and river {10-Spades} and scored the pot and the knockout, bringing his stack over 130,000 along the way.

Sikes Turns a Flush

Level 6 : 300/600, 600 ante
Derahn Sikes
Derahn Sikes

There was over 6,000 in the middle with four players seeing a flop of {4-Hearts}{6-Clubs}{8-Clubs} and the big blind checked, putting action onto Derahn Sikes in the hijack. Sikes bet 2,000 and received calls behind from both Armando Figueroa in the cutoff and Andrew Brinkley, who was on the button. The big blind then folded.

Sikes checked the turn {3-Clubs} and Figueroa fired out a bet of 6,000. Brinkley quickly folded and Sikes called, bringing the river {a-Spades}. Sikes checked again and Figueroa threw out a bet of 9,500, which the dealer announced. Sikes immediately threw in two 5,000-chips to call.

Upon calling, Sikes tabled {5-Clubs}{4-Clubs} for the turned flush, prompting Figueroa to shake his head for a moment before sending his cards to the muck.

Manning Saved by the Backdoor Flush

Level 4 : 200/300, 300 ante
Karl Manning
Karl Manning

The flop read {4-Diamonds}{j-Spades}{q-Diamonds} with 1,600 in the middle and action was heads up between the Tammer Ilcaffas in the small blind and Karl Manning, who was under the gun. Ilcaffas had led out and Manning was in the process of jamming his stack forward, totaling 19,400, which Ilcaffas called.

Karl Manning: {a-Hearts}{j-Diamonds}
Tammer Ilcaffas: {a-Spades}{q-Clubs}

"Nice hand," said Manning, seeing he needed to hit a jack or running diamonds to stay alive. Much to his delight, the latter came true as the turn {3-Diamonds} and river {9-Diamonds} rolled onto the felt to give him a flush and score him the double.

Harmon's First Bullet a Blank

Level 3 : 100/200, 200 ante
Wayne Harmon
Wayne Harmon

A player in middle position opened to 800 and was called by the cutoff. Wayne Harmon was in the big blind and announced he was all in, putting forward a 5K-chip and a few others to go with it. Middle position called and the cutoff got out of their way.

Wayne Harmon: {a-Diamonds}{k-Spades}
Middle Position: {a-Spades}{a-Clubs}

Harmon saw his stack almost halved during the first level of play, losing two pots with big pocket pairs in the process, and his luck officially ran dry for bullet number one as the board ran out {3-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}{10-Spades}{6-Hearts}. On his way away from the table afterwards, he commented on his table draw, saying "it was a bad seat. I'll be back."
