Welcome To Day 1a of the 2021 bestbet Jacksonville Spring Series $2,500 Main Event

The Main Event of the 2021 bestbet Jacksonville Spring Series has arrived!

Featuring a $2,500 buy-in, the Spring Series Main Event will run players $500 more per entry than the Winter Open's $2,000 Main Event held here just two months ago. In that edition, Scott Stewart won outright over a 510-entry field and earned $177,817 for his weekend's worth of work, doing so on the live-streamed final table for the world to see. Come Sunday night, eight more people will have the opportunity to do the same.

Other than the buy-in, all else remains the same as January's Main Event. Two starting flights will take place Friday and Saturday, each beginning at noon ET. Players receive starting stacks of 25,000 with blinds starting at 100/100 and increasing every 40 minutes throughout the tournament. Big-blind ante comes into play in Level 3 (100/200/200).

Fifteen-minute breaks will occur after every three levels (two hours of play) with a one-hour dinner break at the end of Level 9 (around 6:30 p.m.) Registration with unlimited entries will remain open through the dinner break until the beginning of Level 10 (1,000/1,500/1,500) at approximately 7:30 p.m.

Play will conclude for the night after 14 levels of play (2,000/4,000/4,000), and all remaining players at that time will receive bags for their chips and officially advance to Sunday's Day 2. Anyone that does bag and still wishes to come back for Saturday's Day 1b in an attempt at taking a larger stack into Day 2 may also do so without forfeiting their stack, as this tournament features a best-stack-forward format.

PokerNews will be bringing you updates on all the action in the tournament area from the time the first card is in the air until the last pot of the tournament is pushed to the champion. Hope you enjoy.

Misterek Gets Two from Brinkley

Level 2 : 100/200, 0 ante
Scott Misterek
Scott Misterek

Hand #1: There was over 2,000 in the middle with three-handed action on a flop of {j-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}. The small blind checked to Andrew Brinkley in the big blind, who bet 1,500 and received a call from Scott Misterek in the cutoff. The small blind folded.

Action was then heads up to the turn {10-Hearts} and Brinkley checked. Misterek bet 2,500 and Brinkley quickly called, bringing the river {a-Hearts}. Brinkley checked and Misterek checked behind, taking the hand to showdown.

Brinkley showed {k-Clubs}{k-Hearts} and Misterek tabled {8-Spades}{7-Diamonds} for a turned straight, hitting his double gutshot to earn him the pot.

Hand #2: A couple of hands later, the two were involved in another raised pot on a board reading {2-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}{10-Clubs}{3-Diamonds}. Misterek bet 2,000 in the hijack and Brinkley called on the button, bringing the river {a-Hearts}. Misterek bet another 2,500 and Brinkley called once more.

Misterek showed {2-Spades}{2-Hearts} for a flopped set of deuces and Brinkley threw his second-best {q-Hearts}{q-Diamonds} onto the felt face up for the table to see his second big pair go down in short succession.

Harmon's First Bullet a Blank

Level 3 : 100/200, 200 ante
Wayne Harmon
Wayne Harmon

A player in middle position opened to 800 and was called by the cutoff. Wayne Harmon was in the big blind and announced he was all in, putting forward a 5K-chip and a few others to go with it. Middle position called and the cutoff got out of their way.

Wayne Harmon: {a-Diamonds}{k-Spades}
Middle Position: {a-Spades}{a-Clubs}

Harmon saw his stack almost halved during the first level of play, losing two pots with big pocket pairs in the process, and his luck officially ran dry for bullet number one as the board ran out {3-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}{10-Spades}{6-Hearts}. On his way away from the table afterwards, he commented on his table draw, saying "it was a bad seat. I'll be back."

Manning Saved by the Backdoor Flush

Level 4 : 200/300, 300 ante
Karl Manning
Karl Manning

The flop read {4-Diamonds}{j-Spades}{q-Diamonds} with 1,600 in the middle and action was heads up between the Tammer Ilcaffas in the small blind and Karl Manning, who was under the gun. Ilcaffas had led out and Manning was in the process of jamming his stack forward, totaling 19,400, which Ilcaffas called.

Karl Manning: {a-Hearts}{j-Diamonds}
Tammer Ilcaffas: {a-Spades}{q-Clubs}

"Nice hand," said Manning, seeing he needed to hit a jack or running diamonds to stay alive. Much to his delight, the latter came true as the turn {3-Diamonds} and river {9-Diamonds} rolled onto the felt to give him a flush and score him the double.

Sikes Turns a Flush

Level 6 : 300/600, 600 ante
Derahn Sikes
Derahn Sikes

There was over 6,000 in the middle with four players seeing a flop of {4-Hearts}{6-Clubs}{8-Clubs} and the big blind checked, putting action onto Derahn Sikes in the hijack. Sikes bet 2,000 and received calls behind from both Armando Figueroa in the cutoff and Andrew Brinkley, who was on the button. The big blind then folded.

Sikes checked the turn {3-Clubs} and Figueroa fired out a bet of 6,000. Brinkley quickly folded and Sikes called, bringing the river {a-Spades}. Sikes checked again and Figueroa threw out a bet of 9,500, which the dealer announced. Sikes immediately threw in two 5,000-chips to call.

Upon calling, Sikes tabled {5-Clubs}{4-Clubs} for the turned flush, prompting Figueroa to shake his head for a moment before sending his cards to the muck.

Dustin Delivers a Dusting

Level 7 : 400/800, 800 ante
Dustin Holladay
Dustin Holladay

Dustin Holladay opened to 2,100 under the gun and action folded around to the cutoff, who called. The small blind called as well and action went three ways to a flop of {j-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}.

The small blind checked and Holladay continuation-bet 4,000. The cutoff jammed for 21,900 and the small blind folded, prompting Holladay to quickly put stacks of chips down beside his original bet to signify a call.

All-In Player: {a-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}
Dustin Holladay: {k-Clubs}{k-Diamonds}

Holladay faded the aces and diamonds in the deck on both the turn {5-Clubs} and river {10-Spades} and scored the pot and the knockout, bringing his stack over 130,000 along the way.

Andrews Over a Quarter Million

Level 8 : 500/1,000, 1,000 ante
Kelly Joe Andrews
Kelly Joe Andrews

Kelly Joe Andrews opened to 2,400 in the hijack and the player on the button three-bet to 6,000. Action made its way back to Andrews and he looked across the table to his opponent, eyeing his stack before four-betting to 27,400. The amount was enough to put the player on the button at risk for their stack of 22,700, and the player thought for a few moments before reluctantly committing his remaining chips.

Player on the Button: {k-Spades}{j-Hearts}
Kelly Joe Andrews: {a-Clubs}{q-Clubs}

Andrews had just been spotted with a large stack and it grew even more as a safe runout of {8-Clubs}{a-Hearts}{7-Spades}{a-Spades}{9-Spades} left his opponent drawing dead by the turn. He now looks to have the largest stack in the room with more than a quarter-million.
